I bought a Lycatalk voucher from a shop - I usually buy an 0800 calling card, with a pin - and use it immediately - dial 0800 number and put in the pin, and I can talk around the world.

With Lyca talk I HAVE to register to get an account
1. the voucher does not say this, it just has a customer services number.
2. When I call to register, I am asked for ALL my very PERSONAL information
my question is what possible use does Lyca Talk have for this infromation except to sell it on to others - they will never send me an account, I am using a voucher from a shop?

3. they asked for address (And it has to be a valid address as I tried to give a fake one and they are checking on a database!) and then my BIRTH DATE - this is often used as security on your bank account and should NOT be given to other companies
4. They then insisted that I provide the phone from which I will make all my calls - so I cannot use the card from a landline AND a mobile, I have to chose. They cannot enable my account without me giving one of these numbers, when I explained that to call home and my family, I sometimes can call from the office (the 0800 number!) and sometimes from home and occasionally when its urgent, from my mobile, Shailah just kept insisting that without one number she could not enable an account and I would not be able to use the voucher.

BEWARE people - what are LycaTalk doing with all this information? They don't need it! Its your personal informaiton and its almost certainly being stored somewhere, we don't know who Lycatalk are, there's no information on their address etc on the voucher and the call-centre is obviously in India, so they can do what they like as there are no data-protection rules in India!

I am returning the voucher to the shop unused, as I don't want this kind of trouble.
Globaletalk card is very very good value and you don't have to register - try and get one of their cards in stead!

This is a NEGATIVE Star review!

I bought a $20 value long distance calling card on Nov 17 but the card could not make calls. It kept saying "you have $20 credit, please enter the destination number" no matter how many times I have tried. On Nov 19, I called the CS at [protected] but the rep answered the phone said she is at Mobile department so I have to call [protected], huh? Whatever kept calling that number I have reached the calling card department eventually. The rep told me they have a system issue so I have to wait 24 to 48 hours to make calls. The card still could not make calls after 48 hours so I called the CS again on Nov 21. Same old, I have reached the calling card department after many tries! The same rep said they are still fixing the system issue so I have to wait another 24 to 48 hours to make calls. After another 48 hours it still could not make calls. I called the CS again on Nov 23 then was told by the same rep that they have been fixing the issue so I have to keep trying the card until the card can make calls, but she doesn't know when will that be, might be forever? It was also useless to call the CS as she is not the person to fix the system! I asked her why the calling cards still available for sale online up to that day if they have system issue that could not be fixed after a week, knowing customers can not make calls with the cards they use MONE to buy? she remained silent! Ridiculously when I kept trying the card a few airtime minutes was deducted while no calls were made through!

Now I don't know if they really have a system issue (that can't be fixed after a whole week) or the card they sold me is faulty but they don't want to refund me or replace the card, so they make up such an excuse. If the card cannot be used this is a scam!

I have been using Lyca talk since 2 years. I recharged Lyca for 30 dollars. I didn't make any calls. Next day, i found i have zero minutes. I called them and explained and one of their representative escalated this ticket to their technical support and it has been a week now and they keep on saying it is with our technical support and they are working on it. Every time as they asked me to call back they are saying we didn't get any update from our technical team. I don't understand what the ### they and their technical doing. Very cheap service. Today, i asked him to transfer my call to his manager and he said he is busy right now. He will give you call back. I didn't receive any call from manger and i called back and Mital Kumar is saying my manager tried to call you but line went blank. They are cheaters. All in all, they don't want to refund my minutes either money. Very disappointed. Very cheap service. Not responsible at all. You guides should close your company. Frauds.

why they want to know all this...

cant they allow customers to topup without all this verification.

I ve been with Lycatalk for a while now and the service has always been ok up until now . Ive tried to ring 2 destinations one in Italy and the other in Indonesia, both mobiles. Numbers are not recognised so I cant place the call. Ive rang their customer services more than seven times. Each time they say they will fix the problem but nothing happens. They at first said the calls where being connected on their system. But my credit doesn't go down. i think they're giving me the run around. Im quite annoyed as they wont refund my money or fix the problem. What can I do.? It seems like I just have to put up with this terrible service.

I really hate this website. They are not professional and their service very poor. I asked for a refund which I cant make a call from any numbers. They simply saying that refund is not possible and I have to use my account. Please do something for this website.

Absolutely in agreement there. Lycatalk store all information and it seems all information (even password!) is known to customer service staff. I have been calling with a complaint regarding my account. On one ocassion, the agent called back and in trying to simulate the issue
he utterred my password (which I had given to him in a previous call a day ago! ) The fact that he should not have asked for my password and i should not have given is another issue.
Regarding my complaint, they have also been trying to wipe out my card data from the account, but have been unsuccessful. So their system has stored it and they now do not know how to wipe it !
Also, they say no hidden charges. But when i asked customer service agent to close my account and open a new one as clearly they had failed to resolve an issue with my account caused by their system failure. The response was - THERE IS A £5 CHARGE TO CLOSE THE ACCOUNT. IS THAT NOT HIDDEN INFORMATION ? AND MISLEADING WHEN THEY SAY THERE ARE NO HIDDEN CHARGES!
It has been over 3 months, I have made numerous calls to followup on my issue. Each time, I have been the one chasing them rather than they proactively looking into the issue and keeping me informed and to date, the issue still exists! Very poor attitude of customer service staff i must say.
I do not want to sound biased, on the positive side, the connection, connectivity is good. But customer service is absolutely hopeless...
