BE SURE TO CHECK ADOPTION POLICIES OF ANIMAL RESCUES BEFORE APPLYING FOR A PET!
My wife and I applied to adopt a dog from Furry Friends Network in July 2009.
First, we were told in the beginning that FFN did not adopt out of state, however their website FAQ clearly states that they do.
Then after we were told that we were favored over 20 other applicants, they told us that FFN does not adopt to homes with un-neutered/un-spayed pets, However their website FAQ only implies this and does not clearly state this as a policy.
On our application we did indicate that the pets in our home were neutered, however we assumed this would only apply to the female, as we were adopting a male.
They said the only exception to this policy was if the un-neutered animal was too sick for the operation.
Which essentially means that they will adopt an animal to a family with a sick animal,
and not to a family whose pets do not meet a criteria which has nothing to do with the rescued animal!
We have exposed ourselves to unnecessary scrutiny, wasted countless hours and offered to drive hundreds of miles to adopt a pet from their rescue, just to be rejected by a policy that has nothing to do with the adoption.
The fact that we chose not to have our pet fixed is no one's business but our own, and has no effect on the health or well being of another pet who has already been fixed.
Please do not misunderstand my original complaint.
I think that most rescues are honest and do a wonderful thing by putting needy animals with deserving families.
I only wanted to warn people to be aware of policies of shelters before getting their hopes up.
People should also be sure to adopt the proper animal for their particular situation too.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
We adopted two precious cats (sisters) from Furry Friends Network. We were thoroughly vetted. Our vet was caked, friends and relatives were also called and interviewed. I hated the process, but am very grateful that they care so much about the animals in their charge.
I rescue. I adopt out. This country's shelters are so freakin' full of animals that were relinquished or put out years later, because of very loose adoption policies. I match personality, size of the home, intelligence - yes - intelligence, etc. If you are too freakin stupid to know that the reason your female cat is meowing and acting frantic every 2 weeks is because she is miserable and in heat, because you didn't get her spayed, then you are too stupid to own one of my rescues. And frankly, there are too many organizations that look at all of the wrong criteria and ignore the important things. I won't adopt out a kitten to a young couple with 2 children under the age of 3. Why? Because I've never had one work out. They have absolutely no time for the little guy. The kitten gets ignored, often is frightened of the children and then the idiots end up getting rid of it later anyway when they realize they don't want to be bothered scooping litter. I don't adopt out to single men under 23. Why? Because they're never home. They're out at the bars, night clubs, partying with the guys, tailgaiting, etc. Keep in mind that I run a kitten rescue. No kitten wants to be taken from siblings, mother, etc., and dumped in a bachelor pad and left there 24/7 until the selfish idiot who wanted him just for his own few hours a week - finally gets home. I make people sign a form stating that they won't adopt any more than a certain number of animals in the home, or I can come take the pet back. Yep! Too many freakin people seem like wonderful pet owners, and then you hear about them a year later, having adopted 2 or 3 more pets and you're like...are you even paying attention to the one you adopted from me? I could go on and on. People lie, embellis, deceive...I've seen it all. Stay at home moms, all of a sudden on Facebook, are going to school and then working nights. There's no one home with the kitten.. People have a nice place until you see it...and there's garbage all over the floor. So - stop knocking the organizations that screen people. Quit getting offended.
People in animal rescue can be so screwey! They make all sorts of rules that they apply to every animal even if the rule doesn't suit that particular animal. Rescues aren't always honest or up front but they want to know every single thing about you! Have you checked out the White Paws complaint? That rescue took a volunteer's information off her application and called her vet after she asked them not to because she decided not to adopt a dog. Rescues can't be trusted.
