Value Village / Savers - Incident of perceived discrimination

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to formally report an incident of perceived discrimination that I experienced at 6:50 pm, 2023-09-17 at the Value Village located on 4465 Wellington Road South, London, Ontario. As a Muslim woman who wears a headscarf as part of my religious observance, I feel that this attire might have been a factor in the differential treatment I received.

On the mentioned day, I was in the store during closing hours. I am fully aware of and respectful towards store policies, As I was making my way to the exit, I momentarily turned around to retrieve my cart, which I had placed behind me. Immediately after, an employee by the name of Taylor, approached and addressed me in a notably loud and discourteous manner, insinuating that I intended to prolong my shopping.

It was especially disconcerting to note that other customers, who were also in the store and making their way out, were not approached or reprimanded in any manner. Their visible surprise and shock at the supervisor's interaction with me only further highlighted the differential treatment I received.

Given the gravity of this incident, coupled with my feeling of being unfairly singled out potentially due to my visible religious identity, I firmly believe that appropriate and decisive action needs to be taken regarding the supervisor's behavior. Such incidents not only impact the individuals involved but also tarnish the reputation of the establishment. While I understand the complexity of personnel decisions, I would suggest reconsidering the employment status of the individual in question to ensure a consistently respectful and inclusive environment for all patrons.
