Abandoned horses find a caring soul but need permanent homes

Animal control officer Robert Melby Jr. stands with one of the abandoned horses he has been caring for at Stonehedge Farm in Paris. Melby took possession of 11 horses after they were left behind at another farm in Paris last month. He has adopted out six of them and is still seeking homes for the remaining five. PARIS — In his several years as an animal control officer in and around Kenosha County, Robert Melby Jr. had never had a problem quite like this.

Last month, Melby received a call from the sheriff’s department. An eviction process was underway at a farm in Paris, and the renters needed a place to move 11 horses, quickly.

Attempts to work with the renters were unsuccessful, Melby said, and, shortly thereafter, he got another call.

The renters were gone, and the horses were left behind, without food and not in the best shape, Melby said.

And so began Melby’s ongoing effort to adopt out the horses. He has been paying for their care since early May.

“The sheriff’s department was nice enough to offer the ability to pay for at least transportation of these guys, ” Melby said. “Nobody else is helping us, and it’s coming out of my pocket. And I’m actually physically taking care of them and doing the work with the help of my family.”

Melby, the owner of Union Grove-based Clawz and Pawz, a firm that handles animal control for several Kenosha County municipalities, estimates his expenses have exceeded $2, 000 to date, with the greatest amount spent on bedding for the horse’s stalls.

The tab is slowing down a bit he said, as six of the horses have found homes in recent days. Still, five remain in boarding at Stonehedge Farm in Paris, which Melby credits for stepping up when he needed a place for the 11 horses.

“He came with a little problem in hand, and we could help, ” said Klaus Dierks, who operates the equestrian farm with his wife, Erika, and son Kenneth.

“His heart was open, and he went for it right away, ” Melby said, of Dierks, who was noncommittal about how much he plans to charge Melby for his farm’s services.

“We’ll see what he winds up with, ” Dierks said. “We’re flexible.”

At Stonehedge, Melby has nursed the once-emaciated horses back to healthier weights. Some of the animals ribs are displayed prominently in photos taken when Melby’s mission began.

The operators of the farm where they were left, the Willow Crest Equestrian Center, did not return a request for comment made Wednesday.

The animals left behind were primarily Arabian horses, ranging in age from a month to about 25 years.

A still-available stallion — the healthiest looking one in the bunch a month ago, Melby said — is believed to be the father of several of the horses.

Others that still remained available for adoption Thursday included an Arabian mare and her 4-month-old male foal, a 2-year-old paint filly, and an 8-year-old Arabian mare.

Melby said the first to find a home was a seasoned appaloosa that he expected would be one of the most difficult to adopt out. The adopter, he said, was a man who lives nearby in Paris who wanted a horse for his grandchildren.

A man who saw a flier advertising the horses at a store in Union Grove later adopted four of the horses, including a pair of Arabian colts.

With his care tab still running, Melby said he remains committed to finding homes for the rest of the orphan horses.

“I’ll do whatever it takes, ” Melby said. “If I have to be on a payment plan for the rest of my life, that’s what I’ll do.

“This is what we do — we take care of animals.”

You know the song, all "all my bags are packed" well L. and A. start packing.

According to WI Circuit Court Access records, looks like L. and A. were suppose to leave April 13th, asked on April 12th, for two more weeks to stay, request which was denied by the court April 13.

Just move out, go without water and food for a couple of months, what's the big deal, you never thought it important for our animals to be fed and given water !

I can't believe this is still going on... Why would anybody risk it? Things are just going to keep getting worse. With all the quality, reputable boarding facilities out there, there is NO reason to keep giving these people business. When the life of an animal you care about is on the line, nobody deserves "benefit of doubt" or second chances. It's not worth the risk!

I was in the same boat as alot of you...I had been warned from some people about them not paying bills to local hay/grain/shavings dealers...but I gave the benefit and ended up boarding there. WORST MISTAKE...People...it's sad when as a horse owner, you need to run background checks on boarding barns owners to make sure your horse will be taken care of like promised. I not only lost a months board, my horses stall wasn't being cleaned, I asked about it and was lied to numerous times, the arenas weren't dragged but once in the three months I was there, they didn't plow the driveway which turned to ice and nearly killed me the one day I tried to go there, they hardly put shavings in the stalls (I ended up buying my own for my horse to make sure he had shavings), lack of cleaning (garbage was everywhere...garbage can was full when I got there and when I left three months later, it still had not been emptied, there were stalls filled with empty bags from shavings and grain bags piled up), the hay was crappy (my horse isn't a picky eater but he wasn't eating much of it) and just lack of care to the place! Last I heard, they were being evicted at the end of February. Just horrible horrible people...I feel bad for the horses they do own. I have never boarded at a place where I felt my horse was in danger...this was my first experience with a place and people like this...and from now on, it's sad to say, I will be running background checks on people where I will be boarded at and entrusting my horse with them as well as talking with boarders there...horrible experience!

A. and L. are PATHOLOGICAL LIARS. Even worse, they are cruel to animals. I'm sorry but NOT to feed horses or give them water is plain outright animal neglect. TBare, your horses were losing weight because they were NOT being fed. One of our horses lost 100 pounds while being boarded with these ### and within a very short time. A. and L. are bad to the core. DO NOT believe one word out of their mouths and DO NOT under any circumstance entrust them one second to care for your precious animals.

I had a wonderful experience with this Boarding Facility.
When I came here, my horse was severely under-weight, from the previous facility.
And after I came to this facility, my horse GAINED 400 pounds, he had lost 300 pounds at the last facility.

TRULY these are PHANOMINAL PEOPLE who TRULY care about horses.
If you think otherwise, you are terribly wrong.

Good luck to anyone contemplating boarding at this facility. Of course they are nice when they want your money! Think about what is stated in the other posts as from a consumer standpoint, complaints do not get posted unless people are very upset with their experience or treatment. They go to extremes to get your money and business, and once you are there, they do not care about your horse or you! Consider reviewing the link to the Wisconsin court system and seeing if there are any complaints documented with the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau or any of it's branches for consumer complaints. These legal sites do not give misinformation. Ashley and Lisa will say all are lies and they are very creative with their excuses, but come on, there are way too many complaints to be naive and dismissive of what is noted. There are plenty of other boarding facilities in southern wisconsin, and you can look up those owners at the Wisconsin court system site as well, thereby lessening your future horse related issues down the road.

TBmareOnwer,
I know EXACTLY how you feel! I felt the same way. We had 2 people warn us about Ashley & Lisa. We felt it was sour grapes & Lisa told us about how uncaring these people were, & that they'd gone months without paying their bills. We went to their farm nearly everyday & enjoyed Lisa & both the girls, my 2 youngest spent the night. The horses were losing weight but, they said it was due to heat, stress of a new place, etc... THEY WERE GREAT! until THEY WEREN'T! Then the nightmare began. We'd just paid for the next months board when we found out the farm was going to sheriff's auction. We told her we found out & were taking our horses elsewhere. Lisa said " Girls get the locks!" The kids grabbed padlocks & put them on the gates as we carried our tack out. When the cops arrived she said we owed thousands of dollars. We went home with only one of our horses that day. We'd taken our feed can with the last of the Equine Sr. feed, so when it looked as if it would take time to get our horses back we bagged some up & dropped it of in their driveway. Ashley said she'd feed it to our old horse. (At that moment I felt she was a good kid at heart & was just caught up in problems of her parents) About a 1/2 hour later they threw the food in our yard & drove off. The next day we contacted the feed dealer that they said that they'd been buying our feed at. They like nearly every other feed dealer hadn't sold to them because they'd been burned with bad checks. So apparently the only feed that our horse got was what we'd brought when we'd arrived.
I couldn't believe that I could have genuinely liked such deceptive people & been TOTALLY FOOLED! We were lucky, we got ours back many have not. All I can say is, ask your self is it worth the risk. That's my experience with them. Look at the HUGE # of lawsuits against them. Do honest people have such a long list of this kind of crap? They don't change, I got contacted by the Colorado police & some people they screwed over there too.
I wish that we'd listened to the people who warned us, dealing with them was the worst experience of my life!

It takes a lot for people to come to a public forum and air dirty laundry. You would either have to be very angry or deeply hurt. But even if you think that these accusations are exaggerated, think about this - horses are considered property legally. If your horse, the animal that looks to you for all of its needs, is being mistreated and you would like to remove it from the situation that it is in and the other person disputes your right to do that, legally you may have to go to court to decide the matter. In the meantime, your horse is still in that situation. Go to the Wisconsin Circuit Court site listed in the first post. Type in Scot Richter's name, Ashley Erb's name and Lisa Devitt's name. These disputes are real. Look at your horse. Then decide if you want to go there.

I just went on a visit out there today, and it seemed like a nice enough place. they just got new footing in the indoor and the arena looks nice. there's a lot of pasture space and the horses all looked to be of healthy weight. I wonder if these comments are exaggerations or truths. Ashley seemed very kind to me and my dad, and they were feeding the horses when I stopped by. I'm extremely confused, having seen these comments of dissatisfaction after seeing the farm itself.

Not only should Lisa and Ashley be shut down, evicted, and run out of Dodge -I mean Bristol-, but they should also be stripped of their horses and banned from ever owning any animals again. Ashley wants to be a Veterinarian...let's think about this for a moment...would you want her treating anyone's animals, let alone your own? We are the voice that can stop their tirade once and for all. For whatever reason they have been allowed to continue repeating their crimes, let us all stand together and put an end to the manipulation and abuse once and for all! There are way too many holes in their mountain of lies and Lisa and Ashley are ultimately going to fall...

As a person who has been in the horse business for just shy of 50 yrs, I will say that I have rarely met people who are as mean spirited and manipulative as Lisa Devitt and Scott Richter.
I have seen the way they take care of their own animals, watched their profound disrespect for others, observed their lies to law enforcement [this was over the ownership of animals when boarders wanted to leave] and witnessed 1st hand the devastation they have brought to the lives of others. In all my life I have never celebrated the downfall of others, however this time, the hope of their eviction is cause for celebration. They should NEVER be entrusted with the care of animals, not even their own. They should NEVER be allowed to hurt anyone again with their attitude, lies, manipulation, or coercions. The horse community will continue to spread the word about these people, and hopefully they will be shut down FOREVER.

These people are very manipulative. Set the record straight with Landlord's attorney just what kinda people Landlord is dealing with and why no surprise boarders are not signing up or staying at WCEC and why Lisa Devitt, Ashley Erb, Scott Richter need to go and go quickly.

I was a part of the group which Lisa claims owes $4000. These women will never learn. They need to be in jail for fraud and animal neglect. I got called from a sheriff in Colorado several months after we finally ended our struggle with Lisa and Ashley, and they were still carrying around a check I had written to pay their final unannounced board increase (which occurred a day after we confronted them about the eviction notice we had discovered). Months later, they were still carrying it-I hate to think what would have happened had it not been confiscated. It was that same check that Lisa had had her "lawyer" call me about and try to bully me. The "lawyer" claimed that they had proof that I had written the check knowing that I didn't have the funds to back it up. They will try ANYTHING to get you scared of them and legal action and ANYTHING to have you give them money. DO NOT LET THEM WIN! They can't keep dancing around the law forever. Tell everyone you know that has horses-spread the word.

"Okay, First of all, I have to laugh..." Really now. WE ARE NOT LAUGHING AT ALL Lisa Devitt and Ashley Erb. We and a lot of folks are appalled at your behavior.

And the lies just NEVER seem to stop. How foolish of you to make fun of posting, posted by a Wisconsin Juneau Cop/Criminal Fraud Investigator who is trying to warn others from doing business with you. You purposely have not disclosed your last names on your web site and WCEC Facebook for very obvious reasons. You don't want people to find out who you guys are. Well guess what, the words out LOUD AND CLEAR.

We do not find anything about dealings with you to be anything to laugh about.

Your lies just don't stop. WCEC writes in above posting, "Lisa, who has nothing to do with the business." Really, just look at contract your boarders sign. Just look at Eviction Proceedings initiated Feb. 11, 2011 against WCEC et al Lisa Devitt and Scott Richter. Lisa Devitt you are active along with Ashely Erb day to day and don't think for one moment that anyone believes that this is not so.

On your Web site, the site asserts that "Ashley is currently working on obtaining her degree in Veterinary Medicine." Really ? Go to Colorado Sate University below link and type her name ! . Ashley Erb's name does not appear as currently enrolled. If this is NOT the case, please so state.

ttp://search.colostate.edu/search-directory.aspx

Why does the Program Coordinator for Colorado State University Veterinary Medicine NOT have Ashley Erb, the ONLY name you write that Ashley goes by, on list of over 500 students in Colorado State University's Veterinary Medicine Program?

Why in above posting do you write "moved to Colorado for Ashley to attend at Colorado State University for her undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine?"

When after speaking with Colorado State University Admissions the university doesn't have a Undergraduate Program in Veterinary Medicine?

You write above, "there has never been a question of neglect" another lie.

You write above, "All of WCEC's boarders state that this is the 1st barn where they don't have to worry about the care of their horse." Another lie.

Lets only hope that your Landlords are successful at evicting you, proceedings commenced Feb. 11, 2011.

Just go away and allow someone else to properly run stable and care for our animals.

To AKA Willow Crest:

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND...just remember that phrase.

In the past, I have owned a few horses and stabled them at stables throughout the southest area of the state I reside in. The horses never, to my knowledge, experienced any major problems of neglect, starvation, or abuse. But I have witnessed many other horse lovers have to go through these issues. Anyone who willingly defrauds people and mistreats these beautiful animals are among the ### of the earth. Keep lying through your teeth that you have no past record or are capable of caring for other's property; the past will catch up with you.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ASHLEY ERB AND LISA DEVITT

You can also jump to Wisconsin Cop/Criminal Fraud Investigator posting on Complaints Board

Willow Crest Equestrian Center — Fraud / id theft / forgery

Do NOT believe a word spoken by either Ahsley Erb or Lisa Devitt. Go to Wisconsin Circuit Court Access and type in their first name and last name. Hmmmm ? I wonder why they both don't disclose their last names on Willow Crest Equestrian Center web site ?

My experience with Ashley Erb and Lisa Devitt was a nightmare. I strongly advise anyone to NOT do business with these people.

It took two weeks of my time and the assistance of two Kenosha County Sheriff squad cars to get my horses and property out of Willow Crest Equestrian Center. Ashley Erb and Lisa Devitt are virtually impossible to deal with. The only way I was successful at removing horses and personal property was with the assistance of the Kenosha County Sheriff officers.

On March 21, 2011, a local veterinarian concluded that my horse was 50 to 100 pounds underweight. This weight loss was within a very short time while boarded at Willow Crest Equestrian Center. The pictures posted here were taken March 15, 2011 in front of two Kenosha County Sheriff officers. My horse was slightly overweight when she arrived at Willow Crest on or about February 15, 2011. Her ribs have NEVER been visible the four years I have owned her. You come to your own conclusions how these animals were treated.

If the animals were properly taken care of, why would Willow Crest Equestrian Center require a Boarder to sign a release of neglect and abuse to horses boarded on their property?

Another example of poor business practices occurred in February, 2011. One of my riders overheard Lisa Devitt and Ashley Erb having a discussion about how they were going to afford hay. If they can't afford hay, why are they misleading boarders into believing they are financially stable and able to properly care for the well being of their boarders' horses.

Eviction proceedings were initiated on Feb. 11, 2011 by the owner and landlord which was never disclosed to me. Had they disclosed their true financial problems to me, I would not have transferred any horse to WCEC. One of my horses I moved to WCEC four days after their Landlord INITIATED EVICTION proceedings against Ashley Erb and Lisa Devitt. Had I known this, I would never had brought my horses there in the first place. This is misleading and an omission of fact. In my opinion, this is fraud. When I questioned them about this, they denied the facts. They lied and failed to disclose the truth.

In my opinion they BOTH are NOT honorable people. DO NOT DO BUSINESS with these people as the "Cop" from Juneau Wisconsin/Criminal Fraud Investigator advises.

I was not the one who posted the original complaint, but I am the one that Lisa Devitt is saying I owe $4000 in board to. Look it up on the circuit court website, I'm not the one who owes hundreds of thousands for fraud, but that is not the point. Her criminal record speaks for itself, and this guise of running a legitimate business falls short considering SHE IS BEING EVICTED. The same thing happened to me and countless others at various facilities Lisa Devitt has run. I found out her farm that I was boarding at was being sold in a week at a sheriff's sale, so I tried to get my horses out before they were kept on bank property. She refused to let me remove them, stating that I owed her thousands in board and that they were her property, and called the cops on me for trespassing AFTER MY BOARD WAS PAID. Do NOT get suckered into this woman's lies and scams. Oh, and all my spelling is correct, which makes me a credible source. Oh, and writing a review on your facebook page for your business is not slander, just trying to help others avoid what you put me through. Telling the truth isn't slander.

Okay, First of all, I have to laugh because the spelling in the complaint is completely ridiculous! The person obviously can't spell at all thereby making their complaint questionable. Second of all, The person writing this complaint has an obvious issue with libel. Ashley has never gone by the name of Devitt, she has always been Ashley Erb. Lisa, who has nothing to do with the business, has never been sent to prison. Ashley and Lisa didn't run from their farm in Dodge County, instead they moved to Colorado for Ashley to attend at Colorado State University for her undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine, which she has a full scholarship for in addition to a very high grade point average. Neither one of them have ever been convicted or investigated for animal cruelty, instead they have veterinarians and several references stating how well the horses have always been taken care of. In fact at Willow Crest Equestrian Center the horses always receive the best of care and there has never been a question of neglect. All of WCEC's boarders state that this is the 1st barn where they don't have to worry about the care of their horse. So if you have any questions about this complaint, Ashley would be more than willing to tell you what went on and has always been completely honest. It is a shame that some past boarders that have had issues with paying their bills can go on and say false things without any consequences and do so anonymously.

I have also had dealings with these people. Lisa Devitt does have a criminal history. Do not do business with them

This person failed to pay over $4000 in board. She, her female partner and her mother boarded horses with me at my old farm in Neosho, WI. The Dodge County DA had to be involved due to them placing all my property on Craigslist for free. Her mother, Becky called my financial institution and closed my bank account. She was being looked at for identity issues. I could go on and on. They are writing false allegations and I will be forwarding this to the appropriate agency for defamation of character and slander on the internet all which can and will be pursued both criminally and civilly. I welcome calls about this, I would read her myspace account and review it in its entirety! Sincerely, Lisa Devitt
