As a long-time AARP member, (over ten years); I have always been proud to be part of an organization that sees to the needs of the over-50 crowd. In 2011 we took advantage of an AARP perquisite and switched our homeowner’s and automobile insurance plans over to AARP Hartford. We own two cars. The initial “come-on” rate for the automobile policy was $1103 / year, (full coverage for the newer car, liability for the older car). Just today, (Happy Freakin’ New Year), we received an email notifying us that our annual premium rate will be $1967 / year; (both cars now carry only liability insurance). That’s a whopping 78.3% increase in four years for less coverage than we originally had. I have one parking lot fender bender, (last winter-under $200 in damage to another vehicle with an unlicensed driver); but I have zero points on my license, (no tickets for anything for over fifteen years). I drive no more than 10 miles a day, locally. I don’t consider this treatment to be inline with the projected aims of AARP as an organization. In fact, an increase like this, at my age, is quite terrifying. I think AARP should reevaluate its corporate partnership with the Hartford Insurance Company.
Just a thought... Change your Insurance if you think you are charged too much.
