I had a disturbing experience when I stopped to fill my gas tank at the Shell service station located at 6510 Lookout Rd, in Boulder, Colorado. I requested a printed receipt from the pump but did not receive one. I entered the station, where I said hello and asked the attendant for a receipt. The individual stared at me, did not respond with a greeting, and wanted the pump number. I didn’t know and stepped to the side to point at my car directly outside the window when I saw the pump number and responded with the number 12. The attendant printed the receipt and tossed it across the counter toward me. I raised my eyebrows and replied, “Thank you?” He continued staring. I said, “You do work here, don’t you?” He told me to leave. I asked him for his name, and he responded, “I don’t have to give you my name. Get out of here.”
I couldn’t believe it and leaned forward to search for a name tag (he wasn’t wearing one), commenting that I would file a report. He then lifted his left hand and displayed his middle finger. I said again, “You work here? He tersely responded, “I’ve been here more than a decade.”
If that’s true, it’s shocking. I left the station and commented again that I would file a report. The individual then followed me out the door to my car, where I was explaining what happened to my wife. He proceeded to take pictures of the front of my car as a threatening gesture. My wife and I were astonished.
My wife and I are senior citizens. In our many years of driving, we have never undergone such a negative event at a gas station — a Shell gas station, no less. Needless to state, this is not the way to do business, and we encourage Shell to communicate this event to the gas station owner for corrective action.
Claimed loss: We will not return to this station.
Desired outcome: Employee should be brought to account with corrective training.
