My husband has been without insulin for over 2 weeks and have had the doctor call in 6 different prescriptions only to be told afterward that it too is non formulary. A wonderful rep at United Thaakirah call the physician this morning to recommend another one and when we got to the store, it too is formulary and I have been on hold for over an hour only to be told their manager would tell me the same thing. The doctor needs to submit a prior authorization and it would be at least another 3 days. I am advising if he goes into a diabetic coma. I will sue them into the ground
Recommendation: find another insurance company
This is a life-threatening emergency. Do not wait for UnitedHealthcare. Take your husband to the nearest Emergency Room immediately. They will not let a diabetic in crisis leave without insulin. For immediate supply, call Lilly Diabetes Solutions Center at 1-833-808-1234 or check Novo Nordisk's urgent supply program. As a last resort, Walmart sells older human insulins over the counter for about $25 per vial. Once he is stable, file a formal grievance with UnitedHealthcare and demand they cover the ER visit and the insulin he received.
