I met Steve Godwin through a mutual friend Howard McKnight who introduced him as his cousin. I had spoken to Howard concerning having a driveway poured and Steve was recommended. He wrote a contract up for $1, 500.00 which included labor and materials. He then recommended refinishing the porch which included covering the bricks and columns with a masonry material which we also agreed on. After starting the work and receiving $300.00 in advance for materials and supplies, he informed me that he had a big contract with the airport that required him having $2, 000.00 up front for equipment. At this point Steve had gained my confidence and trust to the point that I agreed to sponsor him partially in the amount of $1, 000.00.

I wrote up an agreement which was signed by the two of us. He promised that he would return the money in full within 2 ½ weeks or by July 10 at the latest. He also identified himself as an officer of Structure Building Company. This Company is headed by Jonathan Farrar and based in Durham, NC. He presented to me their letter of services offered as well as the business card of Jonathan Farrar. For the past eight days he has refused to finish anymore work or to honor his commitment to repay the loan. I’m checking receipts at this point because it appears that some may be fraudulent. Enclosed are copies of all agreements signed by the two of us.

I’ve found out that 8 yards of concrete I was charged for actually was 4 yards which means there was complicity on the part of Concrete Supply driver as well. I paid over $800.00 for concrete that should have been $400.00. I’ve also found out he never paid the workers who helped him. I’m sending this letter to the Better Business Bureau of Durham, NC as well as the ABC affiliate WTVD and CBS station WRAL there in Durham. I’m making a police report here and in Durham, NC as well. The three of us were supposed to meet on July 3, 2009 but because of an unexpected event I was unable to. I’m asking for a complete investigation of this con man as well as televising here in Charlotte, NC, Durham, NC as well as Richmond, VA (WRIC TV) where he’s lived and has family.
