Sam Ash Music review: Sam Ash left professional musicians scrambling — proceed with caution

I rarely write negative reviews, but this experience with Sam Ash was so frustrating and disruptive that I feel obligated to share it.

My partner, Tim, is playing keyboards in a community theatre production of the Broadway hit 9 to 5, using the same materials and orchestrations as the national tour. This is not a casual hobby or a backyard jam session—there are rehearsals, performances, and deadlines that cannot be missed.

We needed a keyboard case and found the exact one through Sam Ash. Tim attempted to purchase it with his Discover card. The charge was immediately flagged by Discover's fraud protection, which is not unusual for larger purchases. Annoying, yes, but understandable.

To solve the problem, I went online myself and placed the order using a completely different credit card. The order went through successfully.

Then, 24 hours later, Sam Ash canceled my order as well.

The only conclusion I can draw is that they flagged it as fraud simply because we live at the same address. No one contacted us to verify the purchase. No one offered a solution. No one seemed to appreciate that musicians often have immovable deadlines and depend on the equipment they order.

What happened next made the experience even worse. I called immediately after learning of the cancellation and specifically requested a return call from customer service.

I never received one.

It has now been four days.

Not only did Sam Ash cancel two legitimate orders, but they also couldn't be bothered to contact a customer who was desperately trying to resolve the problem before a major production. That silence speaks volumes.

As a result, we had to scramble to find a case elsewhere. We did eventually locate one, but it is now delayed somewhere in the FedEx system. We are literally traveling to the venue with an expensive keyboard wrapped in moving blankets.

Let that sink in.

A company whose entire business revolves around serving musicians left us looking like amateurs because of an opaque fraud process, poor communication, and an apparent indifference to the people who keep them in business.

I understand fraud prevention. I appreciate it, actually. But blindly canceling legitimate orders without reaching out to the customer is not fraud prevention—it's laziness masquerading as security. And ignoring a customer who immediately asks for help is simply unacceptable.

The irony is hard to miss: Sam Ash built its reputation by serving musicians, yet in our moment of need, they failed to understand the most basic reality of a musician's life—when a performance is coming, "sorry" isn't a solution.

Sam Ash didn't just lose this sale. They lost our trust, and they lost every future purchase we might have made.

Musicians need reliability. We found the opposite.
