RIU Latino resort review: Shooting at RIU Latino

On December 26,2023 at the RIU Latino our stay became a nightmare. As we relaxed at the pool near the beach, I heard gun shots. I told my grown kids “Let's go” we left our things and ran toward the hotel as other hotel guest are running toward us and the hotel. As I was running a man on the property with a uniform stated ‘Bad boys on the beach” with no concern. The front desk was not informed yet and only stated “stay here, inside you will be ok”. No one ever came to see if we were ok or even announced what to do! We did not know if the gunman was on the property, or if anyone was shot. We retreated to our room to wait for directions. No directions, information, or basic concern came for us. Hours later we came out of our room and things were operating as normal. Like we hadn’t witnessed an actual shooting. In fact, someone had been shot and killed. We saw from our window a helicopter and some type of camouflaged plane but still no information was provided. This basically ended our vacation, and our sense of security was gone. Upon our check out from hotel the gentleman asked if we enjoyed our stay, I voiced my concern and stated that we did not. All he had to say was “It happens all over the world now” I could not believe the lack of concern at this property. Today was my first day out of my home since returning from Isle Mujeres. It has not been easy to adjust. I am fairly new to the RIU brand and felt good about paying the rates and enjoying the different properties. I don’t know how to feel now. Yes, things can happen anywhere but the lack of concern for our well-being is very disappointing, and NO ONE seemed to care. I work in the travel industry, and this is not how customers should be treated when a traumatic incident happens of this magnitude. A person was killed! We received nothing.
