PLEASE BEWARE! I received a letter in the mail from the "collection agency" GC Services stating that I had an loan that was in default. I thought that this was strange because my loans are deferred until 2017 because I'm in grad school. They claim to represent Sallie Mae but Sallie Mae actually has an in-house collection agency. I spoke with the rudest people you will ever come into contact. They cursed, accused me of not paying my bills and were very offensive. What was worse was that I paid $2, 000 to them six months before because I was told that my loan had gone to collections. I didn't want this to reflect on my credit report because I'm trying to buy a house.
Tonight before I made any commitment to pay, I called Sallie Mae. Their in-house credit department told me verbatim "Ma'am...I'm looking right at your account. You are up to date and we didn't send anything to collections. We are not a third party collection agency, this is the collections department."
PLEASE DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY TO THESE PEOPLE UNTIL YOU CONTACT YOUR LENDER.
