I woke up on Friday morning, August 27, with great enthusiasm as my son was flying home to Haddonfield, NJ, only to find a large puddle of water surrounding my refrigerator. Being 89 years old, I had to call a neighbor into my home to move the refrigerator out to see where the leak was coming from. We quickly found that the plastic pipe connected to the ice cube maker had a leak.

We quickly folded the plastic pipe over and wrapped it with duct tape which stopped the leak. I immediately put out a call for a plumber, but only received replies like we can schedule an appointment next week. Later that afternoon a Rota Rooter truck pulled up to my home, and when the driver stepped out, I inquired do you do plumbing work as well as clean out drains, he told me that he could handle my problem.

He went to our small crawl space, and looked over the situation. When he came out I was told that the end of the plastic pipe had a pressure pin valve that had been used to plug into a water line, and they were illegal now. What he would do is to turn off the pressure pin valve, cut the pipe and replace it with a sleeve, next he would connect to a powder room pipe behind the refrigerator, put in a new valve with a shut off valve and connect the new metal tube to it. That seemed simple enough, then I asked about the price. I was amazed at his cost, $600. Since we were in a tight spot, I gave the go ahead, just to get the job over and done with. He then started to go to work, crawling into the crawl space.

In a short time he came out and told me that when he tried to turn of the pressure pin valve, it would not shut off the flow of water. He then told me that the pipes were very close to the air conditioner pipes. I had no idea as to what he was talking about, but he said that now the cost would be $2,500 to stop the heavy leak in the crawl space, and connect the new valve. I asked about a senior citizen or a Veterans discount, he said the best the company could do was $2,000. With great reluctance, I said go ahead.

In thinking about it after he left, nothing really changed regarding the work to be done with the original estimate, there was only the problem of running water now. For that amount of money, I could have purchased a new refrigerator and had it installed, or purchased two round trip airfares for my son.

Rota Rooter did what they are know for, they cleaned me out.
