In August 2023, I joined a group trip to Ghana organized by Pink Hat Travel LLC, alongside my fiancé, friends, and family. We selected this agency because it offered curated cultural experiences for travelers of the African diaspora. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing, and in some cases, potentially unsafe.
We paid thousands of dollars for a group package that included Deluxe Rooms at a 4-star hotel (Alisa Hotel), cultural tours, private transportation, and on-the-ground coordination. What we received instead fell far short of what was promised — and paid for.
Key Issues:
1. Hotel Misrepresentation & Bait-and-Switch Tactics
Days before departure, we were told the Alisa Hotel canceled our reservation due to diplomats buying out the rooms. We later confirmed this was false — PinkHat Travel canceled it themselves and rebooked us into a lower-cost hotel (~$103/night vs. $243/night at Alisa). No refund, no consent, no explanation.
2. Not Enough Rooms for Our Group
Despite full payment, only three rooms were booked for four couples. My fiancé and I had to share a room with another couple. PinkHat’s “solution” was to move an elderly woman in our group to a different hotel, which we had explicitly stated was unacceptable before travel.
3. Dismissive Attitude and Unprofessional Communication
Angela Fitch, the trip coordinator, responded with sarcasm when we raised valid concerns. One example: when my fiancé — recovering from back surgery — struggled with the rock-hard bed, her response was,
“From what I understand, your back is hurting, or whatever…”
She never showed up in Ghana as promised, and in the months leading up to the trip, was repeatedly combative in communication.
4. Unpaid Hotel Balance and Vendor Delays
Two days before departure, we were told by hotel staff that our group had a $1,928 unpaid balance and could be locked out of our rooms by 9 a.m. the next day. This was after we had already paid PinkHat Travel in full months prior. The local tour director was also not paid on time. Had he not been trustworthy, this could have escalated into a safety issue.
5. Public Retaliation on Social Media
Rather than resolve things professionally, Angela Fitch made a post on Facebook mocking our group, referencing our “education level” and claiming we were “difficult clients.”
Requested Resolution:
I am seeking a partial refund to reflect the downgrade in accommodations, the breach of agreement regarding room arrangements, and the distress caused by unprofessional conduct and financial negligence. At a minimum, consumers deserve transparency, safety, and respect — none of which were provided here.
Final Note:
Ghana was beautiful, and the local people were incredibly welcoming. But this agency’s handling of our trip overshadowed that experience. I would strongly advise against booking with Pink Hat Travel LLC, Angela Fitch, or Elizabeth Fitch based on this experience. Personal referrals are not a substitute for professionalism, accountability, and ethical business practices.
