I bought a 9-week old kitten from this cattery this past June. He was very small and had runny eyes. No decent breeder would have let him go, since he was clearly sick. I brought him to my vet and found he weighed only 1.5 lbs, was severely congested and had an eye infection. He had also received his first vaccinations at only 2 weeks of age, when the vet said the standard was 6-8 weeks. I know kittens sometimes get sick from the stress of changing homes, but this kitten was already sick when he left the breeder. He was 25% underweight, not because the breeder "grew then small", but because he had no appetite since he couldn't smell anything! It took a couple of visits to the vet and a few rounds of antibiotics to get him better and at an appropriate weight. The other issue I have is that he was not well-socialized at all. He didn't know how to play and would bite fingers and hands. Kittens who grow up with siblings and it's mother learn how to play appropriately. The fact my kitten didn't suggests that he wasn't with his mother or siblings, and the breeder never corrected this behavior. When I contacted the breeder, she did offer to pay for the medication he needed. I did not accept because that is not the point. I got him from this breeder because I thought she bred healthy, well-socialized kittens. I am sure some are. Mine was not.
As follow-up, I can say that the issue has been Resolved. The breeder went above and beyond in addressing my complaint and concerns and coming up with a satisfactory solution. The mark of a true professional is how she acts when things go wrong. The breeder in this case has certainly won my respect by her commitment to improving a tough situation.
I am devastated to learn about all these kitties from Meow Meadows with HCM. As it happens, I, too, have learned that my 3 year old Ragamuffin also has HCM, but has no symptoms. As irresponsible as I think a breeder is to not test for the health of her breeding stock, I can’t help feeling responsible as well. I should have really questioned why Susie’s cats were so much less expensive than other breeders and why she had so many available so frequently. I realize what a gamble I took. On the other hand, if Susie’s cats were properly tested, none of our beloved kitties would have been borne, and we would not have their presence in our lives. I do not think I can regret that. I am happy to learn Meow Meadows is no longer active. I would also be very unlikely to work with any other breeder with any affiliation.
The breeder contacted me via numerous emails in order to come up with the best solution.
I have my doubts and can only hope to be that lucky. My kitten has severe hcm, (heart disease) with congestive heart failure and a blood clot that went to his hind legs. He is 6 months old. Susie is kind of talking in circles with few answers but repeatedly tells me how many years she's been doing this. Which to me only means you've been doing it wrong for a long time. Well ive yet to see any proof that shows me she has taken the precautions necessary to breed healthy kittens.
I don't know how long she's now been closed. But a lady claiming to be a family member said Susie retired recently and the family member is going by the name of Whisker Ridge. I believe she has some of Susie's cats. If anyone has heard of anything new please let me know.
I am going through terrible phase. Just lost my fluffy who is 6 yrs old three weeks back and vet suspected has underlying disease HCM -
We got him from WalnutsI want to know if breeder is making sure doing necessary testing and making sure litter is healthy .
He passed away all of sudden with saddle thrombus and so early and breaks my heart .
I have emailed Susie with my doubts and hoping answers .
She should make every attempt to let me know .
Hi, I just came across your post about you kitty dying of hcm. My kitten died from advanced hcm last week. He was 11 months old. You got your kitten from meowmeadows also? If you could reply I would really appreciate it. I'm having my kittens dna tested to see if hcm was passed to him from his parents.
It is with sadness that I write. I also just suddenly lost my beloved Ragamuffin to saddle thrombus most likely caused by HCM. I got her from Susie at Meow Meadows. She had just turned 8 years old. She should have had many more years to enjoy but she was robbed of the rest of her life by a hereditary disease that never should have happened to her. We are absolutely devastated by her loss. In searching online I see many other posts about kittens from Meow Meadow dying from HCM. Please Susie stop this irresponsible breeding!
I am truly sorry for your loss. Even though some months have passed I imagine you still carry the heartache. I lost my furry in January 2024, he was fromSusie as well. He was nine. His name was Blue. He had beautiful blue eyes and was pure white. He was so special to me. Blue was one of 3 cats I bought from Meow Meadows. He was the oldest. I have a girl, who's also 9, then a kitten, Cinders who was 3 this year. We found out at the end of April that he had HCM. He had to be put down June 8 due to a saddle thrombus. His legs were paralyzed and he was in pain. He was on two heart medications. My family is devastated.
Hello all- just reading through these comments and have to share we just lost our 2nd cat to HCM. Two out of the three cats purchased from her died premature deaths due to HCM. I am sorry for the all to familiar pain you are going through. My just turned 9 year old passed quickly in 1/2024. The 3 yr old just passed 6/2024.
My family is devastated. Emailing Susie is frustrating as she never really answers your questions. Its regurgitated excuses she must have told to many over the years . I know I'm not the only one...
From what I heard but Susie is now retired. She is no longer breeding kittens. A family member that goes by Whisker Ridge has taken over and may have some of her cats. This must have happened a few months ago. This might be the reason why you are having a hard time getting a hold of her.
