IC Systems is a debt collection agency. Upon receiving a notice from them, my husband and I called right away as we had never received the original bill they were trying to collect on. My husband called and tried to explain that we never received the original bill but were happy to pay we just wanted to check with the hospital first. The lady became irrate (I guess the person answering the phone gets commission on the money she collects.) She just kept telling my husband that they would ruin our credit and his best course of action would be to pay her on the phone right now. She was angry that we wanted to talk to the hospital first. As my husband calmly asked her a few questions, she just kept reading from her script. Finally, my husband asked her if she could just slow down because he was having trouble understand her since she was reading her script so fast. She got really angry and just hung up. I would be so embarrassed if any of my employees treated customers like that. How are you supposed to resolve an issue when the person on the other end of the phone hangs up? Today, we tried to pay online at their website but it doesn't work. It is such a scam. Unfortunately, I bet the hospital doesn't know how rude these people are being to their customers.
We're always taught that we are considered innocent until proven guilty...This is not the case when it comes to debt collection. If you are sued, you must show up at the court date and dispute the debt there. Then you can finally force the collection agency to produce evidence that :
1. The debt is valid
2. They have a legal standing to sue you for the debt (proof that you have a legal obligation to pay them)
3. The amount claimed is accurate
4. The debt is still within the statute of limitations for legal remedies
Debt buyers almost NEVER have the legal standing required to bring a suit anyway. They know this, and still fill the courts with lawsuits comprised of in-house generated (FAKE) 'affidavits' making claims they know they can not back up in most cases. They make their money from 'summary judgements' on the people who do not know their rights and don't show up in court to force the agency to prove their claim. If you don't show up, the assumption is that the debt buyers claim is factual! You will then be legally obligated to pay a debt that, otherwise might not even be valid!
