Just a warning as I've fallen foul of a handepay / Merchant Rentals contract !

Anyway, I signed a 36 month contract - no probs there as I knew that was the term although a bit worried as a new business and 3 years was a long time - this expired in January this year. I Duly sent in written request to cancel contract only to receive a very curt letter back advising me that the contract had extended for a further 2 years because I didn't give notice 12 months before the expiry of the 36 months that I wanted to cancel! Firstly, I didn't know at 24 months that I'd not want it to continue so I wouldn't have given notice at that point. whilst the salesman was very specific about the 36 month term, there was absolutely no mention of this ridiculous "on the dot, 12 months in advance" notice period, nor the 2 year enforced extension to the contract.

The upshot is they want £600 from me to return the damn thing to them - money I don't have as business is poor. now - they won't budge on the contract and trading standard tell me that whilst they agree the contract is unfair and unreasonable, as a business-to-business contract I do not have ANY protection in law against this kind of thing!

Anyone, any ideas or advice (apart from bite the bullet and never trust a salesman), and why is there no protection for business contracts, no wonder so many small businesses go under !

Total dog poo, had the misfortune of signing up.my fault really as I should have read the contract, the "crooks" from handypay did not explain the exact details of the contract, when terminal was installed it rejected over 200 transactions in three days, despite the numerous calls to their so called help desk it was not resolved so now am stuck with a bill for £1100 from merchant rentals
total conmen

I agree with the above DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH HANDEPAY/ MERCHANT RENTALS!
I basically got tricked into signing a contract with these and the salesman also told me that my contract wouldn't start until I had the terminal in my hand and I entered a number into the keypad to say I was happy with it. after lots of phone calls and emails from the salesman and him finding me on facebook I asked if I had a cooling off period as I didn't want to be involved with this scam of a company I was told I couldn't get out the contract. so now I'm stuck with having no card terminal and a letter that they are now taking me to court if I do not pay the £1000 fee to terminate my contract.
the sales man also said he wanted me to sign the contract so he could get his monthly bonus! I feel so stupid I was tricked into this contract! and didn't think pressure tactics were allowed?!

All that is happening to you happened to me a year ago. They threatened me with court proceeding's and stood behind their unfair contract all the time. To get them off my back I am paying them £5.00 a month for 87 months I am retired from my business now so may not make the 87 months anyway. I AGREE DO NOT SIGN WITH HANDEPAY OR MERCHANT RENTALS if you do make sure you send a signed for post, termination letter, with 12 months notice before you want to cancel the contract!

MERCHANT RENTALS is a scam! Their "bounced payment fees" are extortionate and late payment fees - just sending a letter out is £25! And to add to all that! If you sign a contract and give your notice to cancel! They say "they've not received it!" And then your agreement AUTOMATICALLY rolls over for another 24MONTHS! I signed a 60month contract to expire in 9 months I sent my notice to cancel in May as they need 12MONTHS NOTICE! And now they are saying they haven't received it" and my agreement only expires in 2016 now as its rolled over! Basically its my word against there's, but they say they are alway's right and they hid behind the contract and say they haven't received any letters from me! I know I sent this notice but they are threatening me with court proceedings at such an early stage when I haven't even cancelled my direct debit! The man I spoke to Wes Carmichael is awful! His attitude is aggressive, ignorant, rude and very much shocking! For me to ring to "discuss" politely and his response be so abrupt and rude is awful for this company to have such an employee! DO NOT SIGN WITH HANDEPAY OR MERCHANT RENTALS! THEY ARE A SCAM AND TIE YOU IN TO CONTRACTS USING THEIR "ROLL OVER PERIOD!" AND LENGTHY CONTRACTS! SCAM!

Hi I have fallen foul of the Handepay/Merchant rentals 12 months notice to terminate contract. They say I have to pay £439.00 for a service they have not provided. I have had a numerous default notices and red letters saying they are going to take me to court.. How have you got on with your problem with them. Trader beware and Avoid them like the plauge or make sure you terminate the contract 12 months before your contract is about to expire! or they will make you pay for 12 months further rental! Should all us trodden on traders get together and ask BBC watchdog or rouge traders to take on our plight!

If you've been signed up by a Handepay Sales donkey you'll have been told they do a 3/4 or 5 year contract (WRONG). If you look at the small print on the back you'll soon find out that your LOCKED IN FOR AN EXTRA TWO YEARS, so if you thought you signed for 3 years WELL SORRY IT'S FIVE YEARS and if you though you'd signed for 5 years SORRY YOU'VE JUST BEEN STITCHED UP FOR SEVEN YEARS! Yes folks it's all true, look at your contracts, these buggers have been stitching up their customers for a couple of yrs now...

hi Aceframer you are right you have very little protection against this type of contract, I work in the merchant service and we take a old fashioned approach were considering not taking on any more handypay clients due to the over the top exit fees ..
