UpWork review: Dishonest, insecure platform, and steals money earned

I was a top rated freelancer on Upwork for YEARS until recently they reported to me that a third party in a foreign country breached my account. I asked them to investigate. They did nothing and then began demanding I send them private information through the same account they told me was compromised. I work in a publicly regulated field and my identity, office location, field of work, disciplinary history (which I have none), etc is all public record. They still demanded I send them personal information, not open to the public, about myself. I asked for a call to confirm who I was talking to. They refused. I send a formal demand letter. Nothing. They kept money earned on contracts in place before any of this began. Then, I asked them to close the account so they cannot continue advertising my top rated profile with extensive experience on their website. They refused. Upwork is a predatory, scamming, thieving platform. Freelancers, please go in business for yourself. I've told others about this experience and they've stopped hiring through Upwork. I also had a business account on Upwork where I hired freelancers but I shut it down due to Upwork's incompetence in struggling to simply process payments I made to freelancers.
