We hired Thornwood homes "David Gowans" to complete our renovations in May 2014, in February 2015 we had to terminate the service contract due to poor performance (60% completion), unpaid subcontractors, and shady business practices. All invoices were paid by us within 10 days of receipt the first few matched the quote and then Thornwood started to request large lumpsum payments and refused to provide a cost breakdown of what the money was for. When the progress on the renovation became close to non-existent we contacted the sub-trades as we were not receiving answers from David Gowans, it was at this time we learned they had not been paid for their work to date and as a result refused to come back. When we questioned Thornwood we received no response. It was at this time we elected to terminate the services, we provided 60 days to finish the reno in the notice. At this time with no sub-trades to work for Thornwood they hired pretty much anyone they could find, resulting in poor and unsound construction. Once terminated we had a building inspector walk thru to determine what needed to be "re-done" and it was pretty much everything that had been done in the last 60 days. Just to summarize the floors were pulled up and instead of removing the nails they knocked them sideways and planned to just put new floor on top, not one of the doorways match in height or width, two of them were missing headers, the skylight is leaking, the garden doors needed to be pulled out an reset, there were spaces between the wall and floor on the second level where you could see outside, the drywall in the kitchen had a hole about 6cm wide and the fix was to fill it with mud. This is a just fraction of the deficiencies, if you decide to proceed with Thornwood and David Gowans for your reno be prepared for a long process, questionable invoices, and poor construction.
