Barnes & Noble NOOK Nook glow light & nook app review

The nook glow light is a wonderful little book reader. Light &is all enough you can slip it in your purse with no problem. Easy on your eyes. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that it doesn't hold enough books. I was told it would hold approximately 2,000 books. I had to get rid of my nook touch because I ran out of space on it. On my glow light it is now at 86% used with 1213 books on it and 639 archived. So soon I will have this one filled and won't be able to use it or archive everything and not be able to tell what I've read and what I haven't. Really disappointed that the glow light doesn't hold more books as it is my favorite reader. I've had to download the kindle app & have started to put books on my iPad through Amazon.

Now to the new nook app improved? Not so sure it is. Again the reason four 4 instead of 5 stars. Although the I can put as many books as I want on the app which is installed on my iPad the ease of using the app has completely changed. To me it is much more difficult to find books and archived books. Very confusing now when you want to add a bookmark to a page. Also it does not turn the pages smoothly. It seems to be really jerky. Also it gets really confusing when you look up a book because not only does the book you are searching for come up but also books you have not bought yet. That would be ok if the prices were underneath the ones you haven't bought. However the price does not appear anywhere. Very confusing.

Hope you take these items under consideration. I really don't want to go to Amazon completely but it seems as if nook keeps going backwards. I don't even want to get into the new Samsung nook which I also have as well as the nook color. I'll leave my comments as they are.

Barnes & Noble NOOK THEMES ARE BACK!

UPDATE 2: With themes back I have no complaints about this app. Love the way it's working now. Thank you B&N for listening to the costumers. I know the application will just get better and better from here.

UPDATED: Went from 4 star to 1 star. Bigger covers & no links I understand. That's fine. But the latest update killed the best feature in the Nook app: themes. I actually restored my iPad so I could go back to the previous version of this app with my themes in place. I will not update again until they bring customizable themes back. Boooo!

Previous Review: I've been using the Nook iPad app since it was first released. I've never really had any problems downloading or archiving books & samples. I just got the iPad 2 and its still working great. What I enjoy most about the Nook app is the customization it allows through creating your own 'themes'. Unlike the Kindle or iBook app that only give you white, black, and sepia page choices the Nook lets you choose any color you want for background, text, highlights ... it really makes each book I read uniquely mine.

I'm not a big book reader ... well, scratch that ... I WASN'T a big book reader until I got this app. One of my favorite things about eReaders is being able to download samples of books to figure out if the description is hype or if the books is actually good. So much better than a real bookstore because I can browse anytime, get recommendations, see reviews, and I'm not stuck if I read the first few pages & realize the book's just not for me -- simply delete the sample and move on.

I was honestly shocked to find so many bad reviews for it here on iTunes since the Nook app LIVES on my iPad's dock. I'm always reading something on it just about every day.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Large book crash and Foreign Call Centers

I had absolutely no problems with this Nook app for iPad and would have rated it 5 stars until last week when I purchased a large tutorial book consisting of 950 pages). First, it took forever to load. Then I noticed that the reader had recorded the book as having over 3800 pages -- over four times the actual number. Next, I noticed that the book took forever to open, it took just as long to access the index and it began freezing up.
Since this was the first time I had experienced this type of problem, I called B & N's tech support number. It took me to a call center in the Philippines where I was connected to a person whom I could barely understand. By the time she had taken me through the most basic "power down, power up" scenario I was frustrated enough to request she transfer me to a US call center. I was immediately disconnected and had to repeat the call..
The second Philippines call center experience was not much better. This time the lady downloaded the same book to her station and got the same problems. She was a little more understandable but had no real technical expertise. The problem continued.
After almost an hour I was finally connected to an American sounding technician at an American call center. Although my experience was more pleasant, he really could not solve the problem. He blamed the glitches on the book's publisher and told me it would take two weeks to resolve.
Several days have past since my purchase. Whenever I try to open the book it will most likely freeze and the Nook app will crash forcing me to reboot my iPad. Only then am I able to read some segments before it will freeze up again. I continue to be thoroughly frustrated with the app and nook book. B &N should fix this problem now.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Giving up on BN

I've been purchasing books with BN for years. I had hoped that, by the time I had a collection substantial enough to warrant some type of organizational features like the long-requested book shelves, that BN would have heeded their customer's requests. Well, that time has come. I now have over 30 books and magazines and, frankly, my library is an utter mess.

I get that BN wants people to buy their e-reader, where these features are present. But I feel as if the iPad app exists solely because they felt they had to create one to keep up with their competition. The fact is, many go us are happy with our tablets and do not want to invest in another. I do not want to purchase another tablet just so that I can organize a library I have put hundreds of dollars in. The fact that we are paying customers should be enough for them to at least allow us some minimal ability to organize our library. I don't expect every feature of their own tablet, but the basic ability to move books around is something I'd expect to be granted to us.

It's been a difficult decision, but I have lost faith that BN will ever listen to the repeated requests for any kind of organizational features for this app. I have switched to iBooks simply because they give us the ability to create custom shelves and move our books around. I can't stand the cluttered mess my library has become with the Nook app... Not to mention the fact that books have been deleting themselves from our libraries for a very long time now, requiring multiple re-downloads.

BN, if you ever choose to listen to your customers and give us this simple feature, I may consider returning. I have a lot invested in my account here and I don't want to build my library elsewhere, but I have no choice. Until then, iBooks will be getting my business.

Barnes & Noble NOOK NOOK app can't compete

I've been an ebook reader since the days of the old Palm devices. Since B&N bought eReader/Fictionwise and is now forcing their users to convert their library to the NOOK... I find that the NOOK app on my iTouch and iPad CANNOT compete with the old eReader app and is also lacking in fuctionality found in the can the Kindle and iBooks apps. Those apps offer so much more functionality than the NOOK offers.

I thought that the B&N developers would be smart and incorporate at least the minimum of what the eReader app offers, but NO... there are many missing features.

I would love to have these following functionality in the NOOK that the eReader app offered and then some that Kindle and iBooks offer:

1. Search feature: can search books and other items by Title or Author. Imagine scrolling thru thousands of book covers to find the book you want to read.
2. Book read indicator in the library list: both eReader and Kindle show indicates read status of each book with status bar or dots
3. Shelving/Categories that I can create within the NOOK app: so that I can move or categorize my books. I have thousands of ebooks and it would be great to be able to move them into categories.
4. Library display can be changed from the book cover to a List showing thumbnail of cover, Title, Author and Read Status. Imagine scrolling thru thousands of book covers to find the book you want to read.

These are only just 4 features that I use in the eReader app daily when I read my books. Now Being forced to move to the NOOK app, I have lost all these features that aides me in my reading experience.

B&N owns the eReader app and chose not to include these great features in the NOOK. That does not give me confidence that B&N is a smart company. Many of us are loyal to the eReader app for good reasons.

B&N -- I hope you are monitoring the reviews and develop these features into the NOOK app.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Nooks

I have two, and this review is pretty much pertaining to both. I bought the second version that came out, which, as I remember, was slightly larger, and with a very few bells/whistles added. Then, when the first came out that could acquire my computer access, I bought that one. I DO so wish that:
1) I usually go to my B&N to shop
For books. I wander the stacks and the displays, browsing through the books. When I see one I want to buy, I purchase it right there and start the download. For some, I do the browse right there and buy; for some others, I acquire a sample for later assessment. My (actually, it's YOUR problem) is that the credit for the purchase does not go to the bookstore I am in. I know, due to the way retail functions, that the
more traffic/purchases a store has, the better. I don't want my precious store to close due to insufficient activity. I DO use the store's physical presence to make other purchases, and it's a major player in bribing my grandchildren to do things ("If you sit still the whole meeting, I'll take you to B&N!) is there any way my purchases can be credited to B&N?

2) I use a lot of audible books, due to an hour's commute to work, That's a significant amount of time that I can't read; the radio gets stale very quickly. Even NPR. I can access my audible books on my computer, on my phone, and use the Bluetooth app in my '13 Toyota Tundra to play them. Now, that is not even possible with the NOOK. So sad...

3) I really like the fact that the Nook and 1-5 telephone are able to speak to each other. It's wonderful that I don't have to try and find the page that I was on when I switch from one to the other.

There are many more things, but I have to get to bed: it's almost 8am and I have to rise at about 4pm to get to work by 6pm. ( Benefit of working
Nights (6pm-6:30 am) in a hospital ICU)
Thanks for the ear/eye on my ramblings.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Disappointed

I have waited for this since the iPad came out basically and it is not currently living up to my expectations. iBooks outshines this app easily.

The positives:
Multiple font choices (more than iBooks even).
The ability to change book viewing colors.
Multiple font sizes.

The negatives:
Having to travel back to the B&N store is very cumbersome and slow. Was much faster to get on my regular computer to purchase ebooks which totally defeats part of the purpose of the app itself. Downloading purchased products is VERY slow and is interrupted if you do anything else within the app. The latest book I tried to download took five minutes (no exaggeration, I timed it).

Removing books completely is frustrating and not user friendly. I have yet to be able to remove the intro B&N welcome 4 page book with the "remove from iPad" option.

One book (Warbreaker) I purchased had an image on the store for the cover and now has no image which is very frustrating. I really enjoy the covers on my books and often discover new authors simply because the cover is intriguing. This particular book also DOES NOT WORK! I have tried downloading it multiple times and have even removed/reloaded the app itself with no success. You will be getting an unhappy email about this.

The UI is very plain with an overpowering amount of white. It distracts from the most important thing, the books. The "get more books" icon is ugly and takes up a book space when a click link on the top menu would suffice. The reading interface is not reminiscent of actual reading at all. It very much feels as though I am reading off a computer screen. Apple did a nice job of making you feel like you are reading an actual book.

When you change from landscape to portrait or vice versa the story you are reading goes back a page. A minor annoyance but it is annoying just the same.

And it crashes...a lot.

Makes me wish I had been able to trade my B&N gift cards for iTunes...

Barnes & Noble NOOK Works OK on iPhone. No crashes. But one way syncing and cannot make purchases

I wrote the following post a few days ago after updating the app. The app was ok, but missing a few features. My biggest complaint was that although the app synced up to where I left off in my nook, it did not go the other way around (nook device did not sync up to last page on iPhone app). Well, I was very happy to turn on my nook device and it did exactly what I had just complained about it lacking; the sync went BOTH ways...

... Or so I thought.

Now I'm sitting on my break at work, left my nook at home, and trying to catch up on my book via the iPhone app, but the bookmark did not move :(

(Original post)
Other reviews complain about the app crashing or not loading and that the good reviews are BS employees trying to fix the ratings. I'm not a "BS employee" and I am stating that I don't remember having any of those technical problems with the app in the past (no crashes or books not loading), updated yesterday, and no problems thus far on my iPhone 4. Cannot speak on behalf of other iphones or iPad versions.

I do feel that there may be some developmental flaws with the app.

#1) one-way syncing. When I bookmark on my NOOK, the iPhone nook app will sync up to it- perfect for when I'm on the go but did not bring my NOOK. However, when I bookmark on the iphone nook app, it does not sync up with the NOOK. Same with highlighting and annotations. Sometimes if I do it on both, it ends up double on the iPhone app.

#2) cannot browse the store nor make purchases in the iPhone nook app! This was most inconvenient when I downloaded a sample on my NOOK, continued reading it on my phone and got to the end of the sample, but then couldn't purchase and download the rest of it! I had to wait till I got back home to my NOOK (or possibly log on from a computer) to get the rest of the book. And on top of that, I lost my bookmarks, highlights, and annotations after purchasing. (But I guess that's a b&n NOOK problem first before it becomes an app problem)

So overall, the app runs ok on my iPhone 4. I just wish there were more convenient features.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Could be a lot better

Update to previous review:

Right now it takes about 3 minutes to update my library, EVERY time I open the app. PLEASE let me turn off the sync feature so that I don't have to do this...

The books that I archive won't stay archived...help

Please make it a "flashier" app, suitable for the iPad. It is too old fashioned... Both in how it works, and how it looks.

Old review:
I would like:

To be able to turn OFF the sync feature. I do not want the same books on different devices. I want to open the last book I was reading on each specific device... PLEASE save me some time! If I read one book on my computer and a different book on my iPad, PLEASE stop the sync!

It takes much too long to update every time you start opening a book. It checks for the last page you were on, notes you added ... It is a CHORE every time I start to wait for it to update. I have 56 books right now, and I can't imagine how slow it will be to update as I get more and more books.

I want to turn OFF the automatic download. I don't want the same books on different devices, and it is a pain because every time I open Nook for iPad, it tries to download my last purchase, and then I have to delete it. PLEASE save me more time!

Can you get rid of the strange characters in the free books? they don't have to be there...

I want to sort my books into more categories... And my categories, not predetermined ones.

It is not reliable. The book marks don't always work correctly, and it takes too long to use "go to" to get the bookmarks.

I keep putting a book in the archive because I can't sort it any other way, and it keeps reappearing in the regular view.

The button to go to the store takes 4 or 5 taps to get it to go there.

the web site needs a faster way to view a few of the first pages to decide if you want to buy a given book. It's much easier to look at the books in the store, and then buy online...

A curling page turn feature like iBooks would be cool.

Please listen to customer reviews, and make these features happen! I really want my favorite bookstore to have a drop dead winning app, and right now it's STILL mediocre at best.

Barnes & Noble NOOK MIssing Key Hooks

So, after updating my password on the B&N site, my nook app will not connect to the B&N store, which is silly because the in-app button does not do anything but launch Safari. There is no way to re-enter your account info from the app after it is set up, at least not one that is patently obvious. Further, there is no feedback hook in the app to report this issue. So, I guess I am going to have to uninstall and re-install the app? What the heck?! I've been a B&N shopper for years, joining their discount book club when it first launched. But this inexcusable laziness in programming is going to push me over to Kindle very quickly.
- Vr/Zeux..>>

Update: Let me further add to the description of my frustration. So, my repeated attempts to launch to the store from the nook app counted as login attempts on the B&N website, causing me to be locked out. BTW, when you try to launch to the website from the nook app, it does not tell you your password is incorrect. It simply says that the app cannot connect to BN.com. So, when I uninstalled and re-installed the app and tried to sign-in to my account (again, a process that seems to only be available when you first install the app), it told me I had to go the website to unlock my account. When I went to the website and tried to enter the new password I had set up, it told me I had to send a link to my associated email address to reset my password since my account was locked from too many login attempts.

Did that, signed in to my email account, hit the link, and got this:

"We are sorry...

Our system is temporarily unavailable due to routine maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience during this outage and expect our systems to return shortly. Thank you for your patience."

It is 7:24AM in the morning, east coast time. Maybe it is just me, but having run four different IT organizations before, I think maybe it is standard to do "routine maintenance" in the wee hours of the morning.

Congratulations, B&N, you just lost a customer. And I suspect several more once people read this review here and on my website. I'm going to download the Kindle app now.

Barnes & Noble NOOK a big disappointment

I've been using e-readers since I bought books from Peanut Press for my Palm Pilot seven or eight years ago. I've got active accounts on eReader, Kindle, and Barnes & Noble, all on my iPhone. My husband, on the other hand, has been lukewarm at best toward the idea of reading books, magazines, and newspapers electronically. He has, however, fallen in love with the iPad we gave him for his birthday. So, I thought since his favorite reading materials are magazines and newspapers, Fathers Day would be a great way to introduce him to the joys of reading on his iPad. I couldn't have been more wrong. Let's start with the most obvious and annoying feature: when you download the app it comes with "samples" of books you might like. That's fine, as long as you can get rid of them if you don't want them. I haven't been able to figure out how to accomplish this. I can archive the free ebooks that come along with the app, but can't get rid of the samples. Click on "remove from iPad" and if you downloaded the sample it disappears, but on your home screen the icon remains with a live download link. You can't remove it. If that wasn't enough, I purchased a magazine and a newspaper subscription. The magazine is accessible, but the newspaper icon, even after I supposedly downloaded it, is linked to the magazine. So, instead of being able to read the magazine and the newspaper, all I can access is the magazine. The icon is of the newspaper, but the content it is linked to is the magazine. I tried reinstalling the app and the newspaper's link to the magazine's content disappeared. Now, the newspaper links to no content. The interface is not intuitive and bears no relation to Barnes and Nobles' e-reader for other platforms. Barnes and Noble owns eReader and uses a variant of that app for for their Barnes and Noble iPhone app. Both of those apps work. If you are using either on your iPad, don't switch to the iPad app - at least not until the developers fix all the bugs and B&N rethinks its decision to include the unasked for "samples" that you can't delete. They've managed to take a fully functional and easily used app that makes reading fun and turn it into an app that is good at only one thing - frustrating the user.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Stacking STILL an issue / purchases not downloading to library

It has been more than 60+ days since I first notified NOOK DEV of an ongoing, unresolved issue with stacking and Nook books not downloading to the library as a result of the December B&N data breech.

All my efforts to resolve the software glitch have been met with absolute incompetence from NOOK DEV. For the past 3 months, I’ve grown increasing frustrated with NOOK DEV as all we’ve gone back-and-forth with emails and asked over-and-over again... ‘can you explain with a detailed description’ and my patience is at an end.

In my efforts to seek resolutions I have explained countless times, in detail, providing screen shots to NOOK DEV via emails, spoken to customer support, went in person during a pandemic to the local B&N with my iPad to speak to an Nook expert AND also left a detailed comment here describing the issue.

AGAIN... to date; stacking is STILL an issue and as I’ve been told the problem stems with the developers unable identify and resolve what is clearly a software matter with the Nook app for iPadOS.

For background; since the B&N data breech and the iPadOS 14.2 upgrade stacking by author, series, most recent, title, shelving, search, archive settings no longer work... in other words it stopped functioning. I tap on a stack it does nothing.

The only way to access a book to read is to disable stacks in library settings (sliding the tabs over). The glitch, bug, software error didn’t ‘self resolve’ with the Nook app updates on 2/3 or 3/3 or any of the subsequent iPadOS updates.

This is NOT an issue on other iOS devices I own (iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPad mini 4) more evidence pointing to an Nook app/iPadOS compatibility/software issue.

Along with the stacking problems, during the course of troubleshooting, purchased Nook books are not downloading to the library, error message reads as follows... ‘An error occurred downloading. Item unavailable at this time.’

All troubleshooting has been performed to resolve all issues;
- Log in/out of account
- Install/uninstall Nook app (when purchases stopped downloading)
- Soft reset of iPad
- iPad erased, iOS re-installed
- Archive/unarchive to restore Nook purchases (error message still appears)

NOOK has not offered to restore purchases, even when I provided screen captures of POOF OF PURCHASES.

I repeat it has been more than 60+ since I first contacted NOOK DEV regarding this matter and they are giving me the runaround. I would prefer a developer to contact me directly.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Not a fan of the newest update

Updated and edited for the newest app update 11:

I don’t love the new look, but I can deal with that. The problem I’m having now is that every time I close the app while I’m in the middle of a chapter, it jumps back to the beginning of the chapter when I open it again. This is very irritating. I’ve had to start placing a bookmark whenever I set a book down, so I can find my place again when I come back to it without having to page through half a chapter.

I am happy that I can now have the clock/status bar showing while I read - this was a major gripe I my previous review, and I’m glad they fixed that. Other issues I was having with a previous version of the app have been fixed by the purchase of a new iPad and more recent updates.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Nook App limitation

I love my Nook and also being able to read my books on my iPhone or iPad using the Nook app. BUT, not being able to purchase new books via the Nook app on my Apple products is VERY inconvenient.

The power cord on my Nook eReader broke. Barnes and Noble no longer sells the cord. I have tried several aftermarket plugs, but haven’t found one that works, so my Nook is currently useless.

While I can access the hundred or so books in my Nook library of purchased books via my Apple products, I cannot purchase new books. This limitation prevents me from continuing my longstanding purchasing relationship with Barnes and Noble. A loss for us both, and potentially costly mistake on Barnes and Noble’s part because I’m sure I’m not the only Nook owner to experience this issue.
