We deeply regret choosing Sunrun for our solar installation. We are now stuck in a dispute regarding a system that does not meet the promised energy savings and, more worryingly, compromises our home's energy resilience.
The core issue is a significant design error. The system produces nearly all its energy in a short "morning burst" with very little afternoon production. This is because the design was based on an incorrect house model, failing to utilize our actual roof orientation correctly.
This design flaw has two major consequences:
Financial Harm: We are forced to purchase expensive electricity from the utility grid during peak evening hours, resulting in high bills that the system was supposed to eliminate. Now we have a SunRun bill and an electricity bill.
Safety Risk: The battery is drained by the afternoon to support the household due to the lack of solar input, leaving it only at a 20% charge by evening. This means the battery cannot provide the necessary backup power during an outage.
I have had 2 breakers fail on me due to the charging and intense discharging of the battery leaving my household in the dark during these events.
When we contacted Sunrun for a resolution, they denied responsibility and offered inadequate compensation tied to a general release of liability and a non-disparagement waiver, effectively trying to silence us from sharing our negative experience.
We have exhausted all direct communication and have filed formal complaints with the BBB, CPUC, and CSLB. Do your research and be cautious before signing anything with this company. Sunrun is supposed to be the solar expert in the industry who should be competent enough to design a system to generate energy throughout the whole day and not just within a block time frame.
Recommendation: Go with any company other than Sunrun!
