That's standard. We used to shred them. Apparently, the company that pays the equivalent of what you would pay illegal immigrant fruit pickers seasonally is worth the protection to their bottom line.
Here's a response you may not like. But truth rarely is merciful. Where I worked at, all we cared was money. After the bill, we ignored you, mistakes be darned. We were onto the next person to fleece. With Second Looks, where I learned that TurboTax is ALOT better than H&R, after I would report in I did the Second Looks, the reported person would take the papers I used to make the determination, 75% of the time, never to be seen again.
Sorry to inform you of this, but yes, that is their plan. I worked there. Regrettably. I should know. As much money as they can drain from you, regardless if it's downright illegal, 100% will be done. You should look into either doing your taxes yourself, or if you fit the guidelines from the IRS, go to the VITA site of your neighborhood. You'll get taxes done free and professionally, with people like me and of higher caliber actually pulling as much time or more as one would from H&R Block. So you'll have professionals from these high & mighty financial firms volunteering there.
Well, again, Wine Is Good and Tabitha, regardless of how she misspells or sounds like 15, she is 100% right on the money. And your treatment of her sickeningly reminds me of why I left. One of the many reasons anyway. She is right. You really shouldn't have to pay for Peace of Mind. That's a silent implicit affirmation that not only did you make a mistake, but you're so untrustworthy that you need to pay this insurance. That, mind you, the receivers go out of their WAY to destroy and not fulfill the obligation that hard earned money bought them. I witnessed it first hand. I don't know, nor care, why you left, but I left because I couldn't take such flagrant, even hostile disrespect and abuse towards customers who paid an arm and 2 legs to get it done somewhere even less, maybe for free, and with way better competency and CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Sorry to hear that. If you were to come in to the store, that DVD and other upgrades you bought wouldn't matter jack. We'd charge you as if you're a new customer. Full price. That one also almost made me throw up as well. Thank God I had the admin password to make it free. The guy paid $400 of that crap to begin with! And all it was, was a submission issue. Hopefully, you'll use TurboTax, do it yourself, or use a free tax prep service, VITA, the IRS offers.

Matt, at risk of being rude, you weren't behaving like your last name. At least better late than never. This was a microcosm of what I experienced. They're trained in this. To get people like you. The benefit from you is that you woke up. A bit late, and money in their coffers, but you woke up. Now, use TurboTax or some other firm NOT Jackson Hewitt or Liberty Tax Services. Good luck to you.

Yeah. The secretaries were crap too when I was there. Sometimes I had to do it, and I was only supposed to do taxes! And get harassed for it by the senior people. Don't come back. Don't go to Jackson Hewitt or Liberty Tax Services. They're H&R Block Lite. Do, either do TurboTax or IRS sponsored initiative, VITA. Look it up. Hope it helps.

Wow! That's something I didn't know. Apparently it's opposite in the great, Mapley country of Canada, of which I wish to move to ASAP. Paying support for your child means you can't claim them. Doesn't sound right. But I'm not well versed in Canadian tax. But yeah, at least you didn't buy Peace of Mind. It wouldn't have gotten anywhere. The workers and managers would make sure of that. I can attest to that, regretfully. Hopefully, you can either go somewhere else or do them yourself.
Carolyn, a news flash for you. Backed by a thankfully ex-employee: Don't hold your breath. You're like an ant they won't care about if they squash. You're that insignificant. That being said, I do fully support whatever actions you're going to do, and I hope they have a measurable impact down the road. Godspeed and learn from this. Get your taxes done somewhere not Jackson Hewitt or Liberty Tax Services related.
All I had to do was read the first sentence. Funny story, there was a guy there always saying on a near daily basis that he had more years experience than I was born. I'm young, but still have a good bit of years, so I guess that was meant to be a dig at me, which I guess kinda is, since it annoys me a bit. For all that hype, I was the only one who knew how to fill out the Form 1116, Foreign Tax Credit, along with the FBAR Form, for foreign bank reconciliation. When I let it known I knew how to do said form, so we can take those who lived abroad, everyone was shocked and started belittling me. When a person came in from Pakistan with Pakistani taxes, immediately he was turned away and I had no say in the matter. The only reason was "You're not getting a chance to show us up", as accurate as that was recollecting around 4 years ago. So it's best to go approach a CPA BBB certified with good reviews and reasonable price to get your international situation done.
Mmmf. This is both what I dreaded and so much more thankful why I left. I don't feel like doing the internet research on it, but I remember my revolving door boss tell me that H&R Block was prevented from doing that, because it was run like a loan shark business, about 5 years ago. When they sold their bank about a year or two ago, I had a sinking feeling that they were going to get into the loan business again, predatorily speaking, like the cutthroat payday loan shark places. Turns out I was right. The ones who aren't getting accepted? Just be glad it was only a hit to your credit score and not your pocketbook. I don't feel like looking it up, but I believe that you have to be working or have some kind of income coming in, it has to be on a Emerald Card, and that has to be your only source of banking, as in, no bank account. The APR is 37%, late fees and transaction fees are $50 a piece, and it all has to be paid off by February of the next year, or you can't use it anymore. There's also a horror story, becoming more frequent, that Block just freezes the Card for petty reasons and won't reinstate it quick enough. Knowing that work checks and otrher finances are on it, in effect preventing them from getting their money. Be glad. Take this as a sign. Which you did.
Sorry to hear that you went through that. Those people who told you that weren't looking out for your best interests, or got blinded by Block. WHy class actions aren't going forward and nearly putting them out of business is beyond me. If enough of them happen, it may actually make them reputable again. Though I'm a once bitten, twice shy kind of guy. You don't get a second chance to fool me again like the first time. Hopefully you'll either prepare your taxes yourself, find a program or person to prepare them for you at a reasonable price, or go to a free tax clinic, who actually has better trained people than H&R Block.

I really wish a lawyer would work. Because it's unfathomable the kinds of acts they get away with on numerous complaint boards, yet little to nothing is done. I bet you rent money that this Dawn "person" probably got the lowest score imaginable to pass to do taxes. That's what they were doing when I was there. In the FAQs, when one read through all of them relating to the drastic decrease of tax quiz competency, senior (In both age and company affiliation) and stellar employees were to be replaced with more of these people for economic reasons. There, you get what you pay for, as incompetence runs wild and amok. Worse yet, it's encouraged. I hope you're going somewhere else, ideally somewhere where taxes can be done for little money to pay or free. Good luck to you for this year.
Another one who represents 100% what I went through. Yeah, those employees who try and think of the client as a being to take care of and use all resources at their disposal to help will be harassed till they are rid of them, like with me and a few others, who I still have contact with. They got what they wanted from you, now they'll do these two things: 1, give you a runaround until you come back and file again, and 2. Find extra ways to fleece you of your hard earned money and get you in MORE trouble with the IRS. My ex-co-workers there would be petty like that. All it took to earn their ire would be just to call and ask what you're asking. Beyond just ITIN. Anything. And POW! Suddenly, they're manipulating taxes before they're sent.
By the way, people don't know this, but we don't REALLY send taxes. They're on hold until you leave. After that, we send them. Irrelevant if you pay, even. We're supposed to say it was sent, send you on your way, then close to closing, that's when we'd send them.
It'd be for reasons as stupid as "Well, IRS isn't going to look at taxes or send refunds until either XX Date or XX weeks from now, so why send it now?" So in the front, the taxpayer sees return sent, in the back, where the computer is for actually fully sending it, it's where it's waiting. Where ALL adjustments can happen. A few people were made to have to fill out sheets for EIC Rejection. Though when it happened to them, very few came back. It didn't matter to them: their petty, Troll like grudge was settled. And they bragged and took great glee in it. In parting, I'd say use someone else cheaper, who's more empathetic towards you, use a tax program, or a tax free clinic, like VITA. I wish good blessings for the new year for you.
I fully agree. I'm disheartened that you went through the textbook situation I had to face numerous times in there. They punish whistleblowers almost Snowden like. That's why there's high turnover. Well, one of the big reasons why. And corrupt, sleazy acts like this happen. I hope you're checking out VITA free tax clinic sponsored by the IRS or using a reputable online tax program. Have a great new year despite this.

Now for you, yes, when I was there, besides the people I would be fighting against in terms of ethics and morality, the software that was in-house was buggy and crappy. Flaws abound, and always around business and recreational use of a building. If it wasn't above 50%, you were okay, but above that, it was just 100% the computer would do and the people would make excuses to make the people accept it. It never got fixed by the way, when I was there. I loved your detail, but I doubt they're going to help you. They're doing textbook runaround that they've done to me.
It's very unfortunate that you had to find out that way and the destruction it caused you, albeit, hopefully, temporary. Yeah, if I remember correctly, Senior Tax Advisor 5 is the highest you can get. But I was the lowest you could get since I was a new hire, and people, when just doing taxes there PROPERLY, wanted me rather than them. Which gave the employees there another reason to hate and pick on me. Hopefully you're using either a tax program or found someone who charges a reasonable price.
I hope this isn't going to be offensive to you, but all I needed to read was the title. The compensation structure pretty much rewards those who are weaselly with their ethics, such as screwing it up on purpose to save time, but bilk as much money out of you as quickly as possible. Rinse, lather, repeat as quickly as possible. I really hope you're going either somewhere different or using a tax program or VITA, IRS sponsored tax site done free, if you meet at least the most public scope: $20, 000 single filing status, $50, 000 all others. Hope this helps. Don't be a victim again.
The headline alone made me skip to here. The rest was going to be an old story that still pains me no matter how many times I see it. It doesn't matter if you bought Peace of Mind or not. They will make mistakes, 90% of the time on purpose, because the compensation structure actually favors it. And you'll suffer. I hope this is the last time you'll go there and you have access to either an online tax program that's reputable or VITA, a free tax prep site with conditions. One huge condition to get out of the way: Single: $20, 000, all other filing status: $50, 000. Above that, can't have VITA. Hope you're helped by this.
I'm glad you're not, and I wish potential first timers wouldn't either. Right now, they're living on people's uneducatedness, more than anything else. That's how when you first start, they teach you sales, or as I like to call it, how ti manipulate people's dollars to put pennies in your pocket. Secretaries and employees were unprofessional at best and got aggravated to actually have to do work! And internet would go down frequently. Usually because the "Tech" people would clumsily unplug or misplug something somewhere. Very embarrassing and annoying. Well, I hope you're going somewhere different. As in another tax program online, or if possible, VITA, IRS sponsored free tax prep. Filing status max before disqualified from VITA Single $20, 000 all others $50, 000. I hope you'll not have another experience like this again.
I mentioned it before, but it's two tier, one hidden: the first is public. You pay and it shows it was sent. That makes customer happy and go away. But it only goes to a clearinghouse each site has. Ours was in the back room. Any one employee could access it. That one is where we could truly send it. That was for validation purposes or as a safe space if IRS wasn't accepting returns at the moment. But H&R Block being who it is, that's where we would keep returns languishing, a good part of the time forgotten. Sometimes for petty reasons, sometimes just plain apathy for people's returns after we get money from them. Be glad you didn't get accuse of fraudulent EIC charges, like claiming kids you didn't have. Which my ex-employees would do to get them in legal trouble to the point the victim now may get jail time or bad press if it was a slow news day. Oh, and don't hold your breath. It's policy never to admit mistakes. Anything that'll cost the company one penny will be protected by the sleaziest ways imaginable. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Just count your blessings it wasn't worse, and that you're either using a tax program online or VITA, FIling Status single $20, 000, all others $50, 000 to qualify. Hope you have better times ahead.
The majority of my complaint here is that the H&R Block you worked for is NOT the H&R Block I worked for. And not just one site. The WHOLE district was that nasty. I HAD to attend those nasty meetings of creepy old cat ladies and those high of their professional horse, as if they're still competing with someone ruthlessly. Oh, and there was NO DIVERSITY! Only about 4 or 5 non-whites. And those weren't where I worked. If it was at least a higher commission percentage and higher wage, or have wage and commission separate, then I'd still be there. Oh, and the blatant hostility of anti-ethical, anti-lawful behaviors gone also. In short, what you purport you enjoy. Since it's not, I feel it's my duty to commiserate and use empathy for the numerous people victimized maliciously by depraved "Professionals" only interested in putting pennies in their pocket in exchange for the client's dollars. The majority the taxpayers can't claw back after the amended return, WHICH by the way cost $200 flat fee when I was there. So thanks for what you say, but I'm letting you know the simple things they could do to improve client experience and reduce that horrible turnover rate that people like me contribute to. But since they don't, they'll have disgruntleds like me, the few who will speak out, albeit anonymously, speaking out for the clients we, at one way or another, victimized. Just to ease our conscience for those who are affected, like me.
Yeah. 100% what I worked with where I was at. I'm sorry you went through that. All that I can say are two things: 1, use a very reputable tax program. 2. Use VITA, the IRS sponsored free tax clinic. Filing status single: $20, 000, all others: $50, 000. Hope you have better luck this year.
That's sad. Just by reading your title, it said all I needed to know without reading it. Because it would be a rehashment of what I left this gulag of a job for. Hopefully, you'll use either a reputable tax program, go to VITA (IRS Sponsored, Filing Status SIngle $20, 000 all others $50, 000), or find someone competent and reasonably priced. Good luck this year and hope it goes better than when this incident happened.
Yeah, I'm sorry you were the victim of the usual gyp you out of your dollars to earn your preparers pennies in their pocket. It's a nasty combination of uneducation and greed plus time-pressure and people with your problems come out in droves. It's saddening to see, and I hope you don't go through it again. Use either a reputable online tax program, or VITA, an IRS sponsored clinic that does free tax returns if you have filing status single $20, 000, all others $50, 000, or a reasonable priced individual. Hope you have a better year now.
