I will say that the first person I spoke with at GC Services (who claimed to own student loan debt I later found out was owned by another company to whom I make monthly, on-time, direct deposit payments) was really cordial and professional. Once I figured out the discrepancy and told them and then blocked their number from calling me, however, they went to lengths that I'd characterize as harassment -- calling former colleagues (found via LinkedIn), family (found via Facebook, I think) and friends purporting to be someone looking for me to offer me a job. Terrible, terrible, terrible. And, I didn't owe them! Everybody's got to work, make money, feed their families, so I can't hate on the folks that have to make these calls. I hope they hate it and if they don't, I hope the recipients of those calls are giving them the what for. I'm sure Danny, Marisol, Chris and Dave had dreams of more fulfilling work and most of them are probably not overjoyed at the prospect of being belligerent on the phone all day and being yelled back at in return. Pretending to be a potential employer looking for folks via their friends and family, though? That's just dumb because seriously, who's putting their dad down as a professional reference? Cover blown 2 seconds after someone came up with that idea and told you to open your mouth with that lie. Maybe some people are dumb, but not most people, and this kind of stuff makes you LOOK LIKE A SCAM/SHAM. Just all balls to the wall liars. If I think you're a liar a priori, am I gonna call you back? Am I inclined at all to find myself falling for your story? Nope. Not. No. If you're really collecting on bad debt, just be better. Most people want to pay what they owe and be responsible. Don't be a dick.
