I have an Oreck XL Plus vaccum that is approx. 3 years old. I have high pile carpet throughout my apartment. It is very hard to push the vaccum over the carpet. It is hard enough to push that my wife can't use it, and I have to do the vaccuming, and it is even hard for me. We thought that maybe the vaccum was worn out. So 6 months ago we purchased another Oreck XL Plus and we still have the same problem.
You cannot use the Oreck on high pile carpets. It works great in hotels were the pile is very short. I'm sitting here with $600 worth of Oreck vaccums ($300 each), and our expierence with the Oreck vaccum is terrible.
Do not purchase an Oreck Vaccum if your carpets have a high pile or is considered to be plush carpeting.

I purchases an oreck for my parents and they're complaining of the same thing. Our carpet is not really high but mom has a tremendous problem vaccuming. This "5lb" vaccum cleaner costs a fortune for what it "claims". The bag keeps falling off the vaccum as she's vaccuming and the dirt is inside the bag. Poor choice of cleaners. I sympathize with you.
Same problem with a Oreck XL Silver! I have a bad back and on high pile rug it hurts my back! OVER RATED ORECK IS!
I just purchased a new XL Plantium Oreck Vacum cleaner. This is the second one within three weeks since the first one was smoking and I could smell burnt rubber. By the time I returned it to the dealer, the roller would not go around anymore. The dealer gave me another one and this one is getting very hot too and I am afraid the same thing is going on with it. I have just upgraded to this new one so my son can have my old XL extended. That one worked fine. This one is going back too. I am so disappointed.
The problem is with the plastic guard that is just to the rear of the rotating brush. This guard is very tacky for some reason and resists the vacuum being pushed forward on high pile carpet. If you take this guard off you will find the vacuum easy to push. Unfortunately you can not leave this guard off. I spray painted this guard with an enamel paint and put it back on. It made it much easier to push the vacuum around on high pile carpet. Hope this helps. Robert
call Oreck and if you tell them you have very plush carpet. They will recommend a carpet lift. It’s a easy attachment that they will order and ship to you and you will find your problem is solved.
Purchased an Oreck XL21 in 2006. Love the bag, no mess! I loved the free tune ups too. Very sad that the original owner of Oreck was bamboozled into selling his company. The new owners sold it to a Chinese conglomerate and the product has gone downhill from there from what news I can find. My Oreck is great and still working like new. Just put a new roller in this year and it still runs like new. I have regular carpet and tile in my home. If I wanted a shag or high pile rug, I would probably have to buy another vacuum. I really love the bag. It seems idiotic to me to vacuum the floor and then empty dust and dirt into the garbage. Much of it gets in the air from what I've seen. Not a good design--bagless. I love the Oreck and my only issue now is the cheap replacement belts for my Oreck. The quality has gone down drastically since the company was sold to the Chinese conglomerate. The new belts are shorter than the original Oreck belts. This makes it very hard to put them on the vacuum and also more liable to break. Other than that, I wouldn't trade the Oreck for any other vacuum.
