I wanted to share my experience with EZ Pass NY and the MTA that may be of use to others in the future.

My EZ Pass Tag was confiscated by a MTA officer by reaching into my car and taking my EZ Pass, which later I learned was in violation of their code and my rights. At the time, my pass was valid as the toll processed and the light said "low balance, call EZ Pass." However, the officer did not tell me that the toll went through with my pass, and collected an $11 cash fee from me as well.

Furthermore, he held my car against ongoing traffic for 20minutes without explanation or safety precautions.

I have been contacting EZPass for 8 months since and have received nothing but frustration and fines. To date, they still have not credited my account the extra $11 I paid in cash for the toll (though I sent them a receipt and explanation in January, verified by phone). Furthermore, they charged me a $25 retained Tag fee for the MTA officer's act and then another $25 fee for ‘a balance’ consisting of the amount I was waiting to be refunded and the disputed Tag fee, resulting in $50 of fines.

I have found their responses unethical and unreasonable. I have invested hours of time by phone, fax, and mail, to resolve a simple matter without any just response.

EZ Pass NJ and NY both screwed me. Not sure what to do but I have been writing them and calling them and will do so until they tell me I legally must stop.

This company is behaving as mafia. Charging me 200$ Fee for a normal charge of 20$ That was due because the system was not working. Calling customer service is another pain. One hour waiting time and NEVER response.

The government is not solution, they are THE problems.

you go on ezpass from NY and you answer her rudely, without customary, asking right away: what did you come here to do? you know how to read? a disgusting public employee, she's about to serve people, she should be fired, yes. all my repudiation of ezpass NY service.

I have a 50.00 charge not knowing where or why they always get the money off the card but now I look and see a 50.00 on 3/10 but they took 25.00 on 2/23 and 2/28 and I don't travel that much for that when they took the 50.00 I had a balance of 13.00 which out me 37.00 out of balance then they came back and took another 25.00 on 3/12, 3/13/ 1nd 3/14. This is CRAZY robbery. and if you don't attach a card or prepayment they charge you ten dollars for a fee that I have already paid for the damn pass I brought it from a store and have to pay 10.00 for it's rental every month if i don't attach a card. and this was ten years ago i purchased this and they asked do you have the receipt.
so I say that to say that for me to continue this it's a hostage thing. and that a damn shame.

I keep getting tolls by mail with automatic 50 fines on them...I don't just run through tolls. either they are
drop bins that I paid or tolls booths with no one in them due to corona virus where I am forced to pay the
toll by mail no matter what. Either way a 50$ fine on top of every 50cent and up toll is ridiculous. At one
point I had like 25$ in tolls with almost 500$ in fees alone. This is insane and unmanageable. they need
to make the fines smaller and they need to only add them on if toll payment is not received in a timely
manner from first notice of violation, especially given the unavoidable circumstances of coronavirus and
the forceful use of tolls by mail.

Ez pass NY hires rude, incompetent lazy, over paid employees! I called 3 times today to get assistance, all 3 calls I had to wait over 30 mins just to get one of their idiot rude employees even on the phone! The first time I called the employee gave me incorrect information hence why I needed to call back 2 other times, BOTH TIMES THEY HAD THE GALL TO HANG UP ON ME what complete D bags they employ!

I cannot stand having to use e-zpass NY, but i did eventually get one to save on my commute due since i'm in multiple locations i don't always get the mail on time. And the whole MTA system here is so fraudulant and corrupt in my opinion. I mean they give you no way of paying for something with cash by taking a way your options so you are cornered. If you dont have the ezpass you have a higher charge. GOD forbid you want to Go to New Jersey or staten island, you have to pay about 20 Dollars . I mean how can you be made to pay a fee to go within the same city when most people do not make 20 dollars in an hour, absolutley heartless . Furthermore, if you are late with your payment they put on a 100 or 50 dollar fee for something that was originally 1.75 or 9.00 dollars, how ith that ethical. Its like a form of entrapment .

I didn't want to sign up for ez pass but was having a hard ime keeping track of how often my husband and I went over the Grand Island bridge. I was afraid one of the "bills" might get lost in the mail, I would then fail to pay it, and suddenly owe a lot of money in fines for inadvertent non-payment. As a result I reluctantly signed up. Now I need to log in to the on-line system to update my expiring credit card information. This is the third time this week I have tried and the system has been down and I am told to try again later. It is ridiculous that I am basically forced to use a system that I don't want to use and then the process is poorly run, inconvenient to use, and wastes my time. Then I hear all the new stories about people being fined improperly and the complaints listed here and I am even more disgusted. And to think soon the entire NYS thruway will be on this terrible system.

Anyone in Western New York who is having trouble with fraudulent EZPass issues, please contact me at sharonkellybland@roadrunner.com. I am seeking a class action attorney to charge EZPass and the NYS Thruway Authority for racketeering and mail fraud, and am gathering class action participants in order to secure a class action law firm.

I used my ez pass for a couple of months while commuting from Staten Island to Queens and then the Bronx. In some cases I did not receive the notices until the administration fee was charged. Other cases, I never received a toll invoice, now I am looking at my license being suspended for excessive fees added to the owed tolls. In one case, they say I owe 6665.50 which represents tolls and fees, some of which I tried to dispute but since my license is being suspended for non payment, I have to pay it without even a considerate payment plan. Another case, I owe 221.00 in tolls but the overall amount is 2221.00. How is that? I am pissed! What a racket NYC has.

Good morning, I am commercial truck driver in Rochester NY. I saw this post when I googled reviews about EzPass NY. This a little off topic but the short story of my issue with EzPass NY: I have been trying to get a tag for my semi since August. Faxed application a number of times. Fax went to their correct number. I repeatedly called them and they have no record of application. I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor and I was told I can not talk to anyone. What kind of nonsense is that? I was told that they would send them an e-mail and they will call you back. Well they never do call you back or leave a message. After reading all the negative reviews I do not want to ever do business with this lousy BUSINESS. How can this be allowed to happen. What a dysfunctional system that is allowed to operate in New York. They should be ashamed of themselves! Put me down for that class action suit

I had used Tapan Zee commuter plan for over 13 years and in 2017 March I moved to a new job in East Windsor NJ and stopped using the plan. In the same month I called in EZ pass customer service and informed about the change in my commute. I thought that the customer care representative had made the necessary changes to my account so that commuter fee won’t charge to my account going forward.
But the Customer Service person did not make any changes to my account. Unfortunately, I was not paying attention to what was going on with my EZ pass account and recently I checked my account to learn that all along (almost 17 months) I was charging commuter fee. I requested for a refund of $951 and they refund only the last 6 month's money, this is legal looting.

I recently traveled from SC to MA and called EZ pass along the way to register. They said I'd be OK in all the states along the drive. Now I'm getting numerous bills and hundreds of dollars of fines in the mail. The website gives an error message "We're sorry, the system is unavailable. Please try again later." Ridiculous! Should be outlawed

I live on Grand Island, NY (have to pay tolls to go home). I've had several issues with EZpass NY as of late. I've called to reconcile and get credit for the illegitimate and sneaky fees totaling over $150 that were taken from my bank account. Every time I speak to a customer care rep they give different direction and when I follow that direction, nothing happens and I have to call back only to receive more attitude about what I am doing wrong. The attitude is off the charts for these unhelpful representatives. EzPass strives to provide " word class customer service" as per their website and is failing miserably. This organization is legalized robbery and after spending hours and hours on the phone and sending faxes, I am furious. It would be helpful if you could actually speak to someone in Albany, however they conveniently only accept written correspondence. This company is shameful and should be audited and return the excessive fines its stolen from the government's constituents immediately. Note - I have no gotten any money back or spoken to anyone who could even come close to caring. Despicable.

I was considering signing up for a month, in connection with my vacation to Canada, but now will not. Thank all of you for sharing your issues. I signed up with Denver, Colorado two years ago for a vacation and it was smooth and efficient. NY has some real problems.

EZ Pass is legalized robbery. You pay using cash or don't put a credit card on file, they charge you a $10 fee. So paying $25, you actually are only paying $15 towards your available balance. Then the "customer service" representative, a term I use loosely are not even worth talking to. I went over my balance (yes -totally my fault) but never seen low balance nor received an email nor a letter in the mail! Being from North Carolina, I only use the tag 4-6 times a year. I recently traveled to NJ, which was the beginning of spring break. It said invalid tag. Called the EZ pass office to find out that now my negative balance was almost $50 to include a $25 revocation fee. I am not paying that. Customer service said I should have called to see if my account was in good standing. Like I don't have anything better to do with my time

The complaint is valid and ongoing. I recently went through the BBT - low balance light came on and I was approached by a obnixious TA employee who said give me your e-z pass and pull over. He was so rude, I thought, Oh my God what is going on. He came over to me after about 20 minutes and gave me a slip of paper advising me I needed to go to the ez pass office and address low balance issue.
He kept my tag... I didn't know why? When I went to ez pass office there were multitudes of people all with the same type of complaint. They were all being made to purchase another tag for 60.00 due to a LOW BALANCE? So how the heck are we to know when we are at a low balance if we are unaware until we try to go through a toll... It didn't say insufficient funds... it said Low Balance. The City of New York has some nerve pulling this stunt. The Mayer should be kicked out of office. He is making this City a place for the RICH AND THE POOR. Middle class working people won't be able to afford to live in what was once the most prestigious city in the world. Rich people don't belong in office.

The arrogance of this outfit is exceeded only by its stupidity. I moved from the East to Arizona 13 months ago, and hace never used EZ Pass since. I called EZ Pass to tell them to cancel my account right after I moved. Some rude ### at EZ Pass said I could only cancel on-line, but I had long since forgotten an account number or password. Despite calls, they continued to bill me a monthly service charge -- plus they on 2 occasions billed my credit card. I called and got a response by e mail that my "request" to close the account was "denied" because I had told American Express to stop automatic billing. Now, this kind of wording comes out of the criminal justice system -- a "request" is "denied" -- and indicates that something very seriously is wrong with the administration and the work force at EZ Pass, which does not appear to understand that my communication to them is an "instruction" and not a petition. This is the kind of official response one runs into in a banana republic.
