NRG Heating and Air Conditioning Attic heater furnace. Furnace would come on and shut off in a few minutes (safety feature when no blower comes on).

Be VERY aware that this company OVER CHARGES! I am a mechanical engineer and although I am NOT a certified technician, I have been working on simple fixes to many common problems on Air conditioning systems, water heaters, blowers, pool pumps and pool mechanical systems, electrical systems, and home security camera installations for many years. I own several rental homes and perform most of the work required. Occasionally, I will call in a company to perform work that is outside my field of knowledge or because I lack the equipment required. I always do my research beforehand, however, to educate myself on the background so that I am more informed when another contractor is giving me his conclusion on the problem, method of repair, and estimate on time and cost. When I discovered that the attic heater blower was NOT coming on, I heard the characteristic "hummm", and realized 1 of 2 things was the result. A stuck motor unable to rotate the armature, or a bad capacitor (this is the most common problem of the two). I have replaced many of these on Air conditioning units. The capacitor gives the motor a "push" on start up. I could not get the cover off the attic heater to look at the capacitor. (you look for swelling of the terminal plate, excessive corrosion on the terminals, wire burns or signs of over heating due to current surges, etc.). OR... just replace it because this part only costs between $3 and $12. I called NRG Heating and Air conditioning because all their ads say they are the best, number one, in business for 33 years of more, very professional, etc.
Well now I will tell you what transpired. First... very good response, guy would be there the next day. What I did NOT know is that they had sent an email the following day that was at least 3 pages of an agreement. If you take the time to read it, you will find that any service call will charge you 2 hours of labor! Are you kidding. They don't even tell you what the labor rate is!
The guy showed up, basically popped the cover off by prying with a screwdriver (I was afraid of damaging the cover to try that), then quickly told me in 4 minutes that it was the blower motor and needed to be replaced! I mentioned all the mechanical and electrical checks I had done and asked why it wasn't the capacitor... after all, did you do a microfarad reading or resistance check to see if it was open, if all good... did you check the secondary winding on the motor to verify that it was burned out... what about the commutator brush blocks being too worn (another inexpensive fix)...
The technician then asked how I know all this. He simply reached in his bag and pulled out a replacement capacitor and it snaps in place, and everything works. It was just a bad capacitor as I suspected and asked him to check right off. He spent a total of 30 minutes and then he went to his laptop computer to give me a bill for over $300! What! I challenged the cost and mentioned that the capacitor costs under $10 and a service call is usually $75 to $125. He said that the company sets the capacitor rate and that he would remove the labor charge... but the bill was ONLY REDUCED TO $250! I reluctantly argued but paid the credit card amount hoping to dispute it later... THEN... he noticed that I had NOT signed the email contract agreement and wanted me to sign all these pages... (my mistake here... If I took some time to read I should have declined to sign anything). Then I could have argued the overcharge.
PLEASE... be aware of this company. I tried calling and got their Customer Service Rep. "Michelle". She agreed to go over the the charging policy with the manager and also to check why they charge soooook much for a $10 part that anyone can buy from the internet. 10 microfarad, 370 Volt capacitor. Look at a company called DIY. They stock all components for these systems and others, or order anywhere on the internet... you will get a price of under $10. Well... Michelle NEVER tried to call my back. Not phone message or email.
I will NEVER call this company ever again! I will NEVER refer them, either.
A fair price might have been an expensive $125 service charge (still high), and $10 for the part. Call another company and get their costs for service calls and labor rates FIRST. Use the internet, youtube videos, etc. to get knowledgeable about common
problems, causes, fixes, and reasonable costs before calling a contractor. Be more informed!... Jay

NRG Heating and Air Conditioning Awful attitude and the company doesn't want to correct their mistakes

OMG. The company NRG Heating and Air Conditioning is terrible. They have installed their heating system in my house, but there were problems with it. I emailed them and called every day, but in response I received only unreal promises. I called 10 times per day, and once the representative called me back and started to yell at me. I was shocked, because it was the first time, when someone yelled at me as this man did.

NRG Heating and Air Conditioning Scam

They came out to clean my ducts for $45. Once there the price went to $575. Then they told me I needed a new condenser (lie) and sold me one for $3739. It didn't work. They came back numerous times, couldn't fix it, and finally said it's working fine. When I told them to come and get their condenser, they threatened to file a lien against my home, then sent me a fraudulent preliminary lien notice. The unit they installed was not the size they promised and they would not stand behind their guarantee. I have a portfolio containing 30 documented complaints against them, all very similar to mine. These people are no good.
