After finding a beautiful dog my family and I were interested in adopting, I had contacted the number provided and was given the address and opportunity to go and meet my new family pet. I filled out an application and was assured I would have response by the end of the day. My children were later able to go and meet the dog and we fell in love.
I had not heard back from the president Judy until late that night I received a very unprofessional e-mail stating that she has not had too much time to take for my application and continued with a list of her busy schedule...including her work and personal life.
The next morning I attempted a number of times to call the number provided from Judy. When she finally answered the phone she told me again how busy she was. I asked how long she expected the process to take. Her response was shocking...
On my application I had stated how my last family dog, who was 9 years old, was tragically hit by a vehicle in the result of a freak accident. She was scared from a thunder storm, and ran out unexpectedly. This happened to be a devastating time for myself and my children. This had also happened three years prior and it had taken me this long to build the strength to bring a new dog into our lives. The response I got from Judy on this phone call was sickening and extremely upsetting..She came out and said "we will have to have a real discussion over the death of your last dog. Our dogs are expected to be put with a family who will give him a long life and not kill their pets. No one in this city will ever be giving a pet to a dog killer".
Shocked, I spoke my words of disbelief that anyone would say such hurtful things.
I know Northern Lights Dog Rescue Thunder Bay is a volunteer organization, but the appalling treatment I received by the so called president Judy Mackie needs to be heard.

Another bad experience with Judy of Northern Lights Dog Rescue. All she seem to want to do is foster out dogs...not give them forever homes. Those poor dogs... The one I fell in love with, Judy said she wants to keep as her own, but she still hasn't removed her photos from the Facebook adoption page. We submitted a paper application (in Judy's mailbox) on a Tuesday. The following Saturday, she called to say she'd JUST FOUND IT, underneath wet flyers. Tuesday to Saturday is a long time between checking her mailbox. Frankly, I believe she was lying and stringing us along. Shame on her! Those dogs deserve better. So do the people who want to adopt them. I hope she's not trying to claim the business is a charity. There are laws that govern charities.
Do Not deal with this offensive woman.

We got all 3 of our rescues from Judy. We have always been treated with respect and she found us our perfect fur-babies :) she still asks about our oldest dog going on 9 yrs The little one had so many health issues but Judy made sure that everything was done and check-ups were booked. Even came to my house to pick up one of the puppies to bring to the vet We love Judy and all she has done for us :)

Sorry for the way you were treated. Talk about hypocritical! Over the last 10 years or so I have seen many posts on fb by Northern Lights Dog Rescue (as well as other rescue organizations) appealing for help from the public to help locate/ catch a dog that "escaped from their FOSTER HOME" They, of all people, should be understanding of such situations... yes animals get loose sometimes, and sadly it sometimes ends in tragedy, but that doesn't make you neglectful pet owners.

Im posting again as it has been yet another month since i heard from this rescue and then today i recieved ANOTHER pho e call from this rescue asking if they can bring my dog back ... very upset and sick of their games ... i let them know i have given up on them actually following through on bringing Trigger home and that i recently decided to move into a small apartment ... in response to me telling them that they decided to threaten me with they are going to put her to sleep ... very, very unprofessional

I surrendered my dog to Northern Lights Dog Rescue in May 2016 ... with promises they would find her the best home and that it won't be that hard at all because she is a beautiful and great dog ... a month later they phone and told me she was still in a kennel because they couldent get her in for her shots because she was trying to bite the vet ... very strange i thought because she never showed any signs of aggression for the three years i had her ... she was great with people other pets and my kids ... but they said they would out her in a foster home and try to bring her to the vet again ...like clock work over the next five months they have phoned me to offer her back to me because she keeps snapping at people that try to touch her near her neck and won't let anyone put a leash on her ... they asked me on two seperate occasions to come to the vet appointment with them so they can get hr shots done and i have agreed but when ot comes time for them to pick me up for the appointment they never show ... then tbey call back month later to see if i want to take her back ... which of course do ... they make a day and time to bring her home to me and then never show up this has been going on for five months ... last nignt i recieved another call from the woman who is fostering her asking if she can bring Trigger to me today (sunday) and happily and excitedly i said yes ... but now today is over and the woman never brought her back ... didnt even call me to cancel ...i will never ever recommend this rescue to anyone ever ... not to surrender or to adopt ... they are very un professional and to me seem quite heartless

Our family found two adult dogs who had litters and while all the puppies were adopted, the mothers were not. We anxiously filled out the application with probably more information than required. We have adult children, an incredible vet reference (who knows we paid thousands of dollars to keep our last beloved dog alive as long as possible), own our home with a great large fenced yard, had reference from another rescue we used in the past as well as an invite for a home visit. Received the auto response and waited patiently. Then posted on Facebook post that we were hopeful the application was approved. It is now 2 months later and those poor girls are still on their page for adoption and we were never given the courtesy of a response to our application after the auto response, nor the Facebook posts. Really a shame as we would have been an incredible forever home.

my wife needed someone to be with her now that she is home alone. we had three daschund ages 14, 13, and 10 . unfortunately all three became ill and we didn't all we could with the help of our vet but in the end it was best for them to be put down.. we miss them so...
we saw one on northern lights site and my wife called judy and went to see her. when she arrived she was shown another dog that was to high energy for my wife. when marble was brought out they both fell in love with each other. we filled out the adoption application which clearly says that they will get back to you in two business days...nope a week later and still no word... my wife called judy to enquire and her first response was.. fill out and application... we did. We even got the email back confirming the info provided. my wife asked if we could arrange to see marble again so that i could see the dog and judy's response was call me Saturday morning and we can arrange something. we did and the response now was.. i am too busy and i have construction work going on and that i have accepted 3 more applications for marble... the run around, you bet it is. i cant believe someone who says that they have the well being of the dogs treats kind caring people, people who want to give a good home and new life to a poor dog gets treated this way...i hope marble finds her forever home despite the actions of judy

I called to inquire about adopting a dog! I also spoke with "Judy". For anyone who knows me, I am known as the person who is over the top about doggies! I treat them like royalty! I have watched other peoples dogs for them, and actually get called alot, because they know they dont have to worry! I treat each furbaby as if they are my own! I love them all! I didnt know that when I called, what I was supposed to provide her with. In a very snotty way, she say's Well I need to know..how many pounds, color, sex so I know what #'s to give you! I'm thinking Okay, you could at least pretend to be a nice person, but she was full on, arrogant, ignorant, and really sarcastic! There is so reason for her to talk to people she has never even met, like this! I feel really bad for the furballs, having to stay with this miserable person! I wouldn't be surprised, if she is mean to them, as well! I'm not saying she is, but she sure has a nasty streak! I have dealt with another rescue, and what a difference! Great personalities, very professional, and loving!

I can relate to the both of you! I was denied because I live on a reserve. No home visit was done...just flat out refusal because I live on a reserve.

Given that most of the dogs in this rescue are from reserves, give a good reason why any rescue would want to return a dog to that kind of living situation?

We had almost the exact experience. Larry spoke very negatively about several other dog rescues in the area, and spoke negatively about First Nations territories and peoples. I never met or spoke to Judy, but we were denied with no explanation. I wrote her directly and received an extremely BLUNT on line message. I asked he to explain why we did not get the puppy. Again rude her response was "we are done". Both my husband and I are police officers, we have a beautiful home in the country. There is absolutely no possible reason for us not to have a dog other than her own EGO. EXTREMELY unprofessional.

Larry was a has-been, never was, fake-[censored] rescue wannabe who has thankfully disappeared from the scenes now. He spoke negatively of other rescues because they would take him on as a volunteer but he would end up running his mouth and causing trouble for everyone to the point where he burned his bridges with everyone in rescue. People tried to help the bum out but he was too much of a [censored] disturber, even threatening and harassing women to the point where police had to intervene. His reputation is [censored] as is his opinion. As a police officer I'm surprised you couldn't see through this scumbags [censored].

Wow! I am sorry for her rude and hateful treatment. Try your local shelter and save a dog that might loose be euthanized.
