GNC / rip-off!

I brought the GNC GOLD Card membership earlier this year (which I thought was a good deal) because I could get 20% off for the first seven days of the month for the entire year. But for past 2-3 months I have noticed that the prices of products are invariably high during the first seven days of the months and after the first week the price of the product reduces. This totally negates the advantage of having the GOLD CARD. I am not making this up I have facts.

On June 30th 2008

sale Price of (2.07L bs) — Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standardâ¢ Double Rich Chocolate was $25.99 (and 20 % off with gold card which makes $20.79). I was waiting for july 1st to buy the product but the sale price on july 1 st for the same product was $29.99 ($23.99 with gold card). What is the point of having the gold card and paying almost the same price. This is not the first time this has happened. It happened for the month of june as well. They should stop this gimmick of having 20% off for first 7 days of the month. People beware of this cheap trick which lures you into thinking that you get 20% off.

Although I agree that the card doesn't help with that particle item all that much, you have to remember that it works on most of everything else that is in the store thats not on sale. For example, the price of multi vitamins is around 18 to 32 dollars. So the card is great to have for items that generally are retail priced, also it works on top of great offers such as BOGO 50% off deals. Stop WHINING DUDE!! Seriously !!

the only time it's worth useing a goldcard is when your buying things during the non goldcard week, when you spend over $75 you get a free goldcard, and everything beyond $75 gets a 20% discount, when you use your gold card during gold card week its more like a 10% discount, i wouldnt waste your time at gnc any way its way over prices find a discount nutrition store in your area, they are mom and pop style stores that offer everything a lot cheaper, or try tfsuppments, nutraplanet, or volumenutrition (google them)

Everything GNC does rips you off. Did you know that half the time the products you are looking for are there, or are actually very good products, but GNC employees tell you they're not there, or not in stock, or that they don't work? This is because GNC corporate tracks the performance, and therefore the jobs of the employees by their sales percentages of only certain items. GNC employees don't want to sell you items that aren't tracked because that would go against the percentage of items they have sold that ARE tracked. For example..."Wheybolic Extreme 60" is a "Premium Product, " one of the tracked items. It is tracked as a percentage of units sold vs. transactions. So if you come in looking for protein, and don't buy "Wheybolic, " or any other "Premium Product, " then they don't want you to buy anything at all, because that simply becomes another transaction that's NOT a "Premium, " so it hurts them.
GNC employees get fired if their numbers aren't good, and GNC ONLY tracks these numbers, not total sales, so anything you buy will only be because they want you to buy it, or you're going to have problems.

You also have to question the quality of the products sold when the first thing from customer service recorded message is a dedicated toll-free number should you be having an allergic reaction to their products. I purchased the Liquid Multi Colloidal Minerals Dietary Supplement at a local GNC store and only after I opened the bottle, I noticed it contains many poisonous heavy metals in unlisted concentrations, such as Antimony, Barium, Beryllium, Cesium, Palladium, Thallium, and Uranium. If it contains Uranium, it must contain Lead because Lead is the byproduct of Uranium (you never find Uranium compounds in nature without also finding Lead compounds, mostly Lead Oxide --- the same stuff that is against the law to use in paint that got China in so much trouble). It says on the label that it is "clay-derived", which is the water drained/filtered out of mud. I you will pay $20 for water that has been filtering through mud, then you are the customer GNC wants.

I would like to add that GNC practice this weird pricing system which is what the post is about. As a former employee of GNC, I felt terrible that I had to do the "promo changes." All the means is the pretty red tags that reflect sales prices are flipped over to reveal a lower price. The ON protein is a good example. Another example is Hydoxycut Hardcore. The 120 count is usually on sale. But check this pricing scheme:
    Manufacture Retail Price: $59.99
Sale Price during 1st to 11th/12th of the month: $54.99
Sale Price with your discount card: $43.99 (assuming you purchased the card already)

Now, here's where the kicker is. After the end of the "sale" week, a lot of the red tags you see get flipped over. So here's what the price of Hydroxycut Hardcore 120 count: $42.99 ~ $43.99

OK, so you either lose $1 or you paid the same price as you did during the Gold Card week... if you bought that product during non Gold Card week. Does that make any sense at all?

So another post said the GC is great for products usually not on sale. Well, why bother when you can probably get a similar product or exact same product, elsewhere for cheap. Vitapaks are $49.99! The ones at Vitamin World are $34.99 for a month's supply and they're almost the same. So do yourself a favor and don't bother shopping at GNC!

I'm a GNC store manager, and I honestly think that some of the people claiming to be store employees are either lying or grossly misinformed about GNC corporate policies. Each sale begins at the BEGINNING of each month, and ends at the END of each month. Prices aren't raised for Gold Card week; that just happens to be when other items go on sale.

The prices thar Richie quotes on HydroxyCut products are simply inaccurate. The standard price on Hydroxycut Max 120-ct is $59.99. What "Random" says about Gold Cards is simply inaccurate. They save you 20% on your first purchase AND in the first week of the month. It doesn't go down to 10% in the first week-- it is ALWAYS 20% off during that time period. And she is right that the Gold Cards are free and will save you money 20% off if you spend more than $75.

Genevra is lying. The sales do not begin and end at the end of each month. There is a promo 1 sale that goes thru gold card week and a promo 2 sale that goes the rest of the month. I am a store manager too and am quitting because I come home each night feeling terrible for ripping off customers thru gnc's deceptive practices. I also hate that we're forced to sell only certain products. They force us to sell everyone the "P3" items, which are typically products with the largest markups and they last 30 days so you have to come in every month to get more. Unfortunately most of them are inferior products, especially the horrid vitapacks which have useless amount o many ingredients and the customer would be way better off buying the ingredients separately so they'd get useful dosages and save a lot of money. The whole p3 thing is crap. Instead of selling someone what I think is best, I have to make sure they get something from this group of 25 or so items. Then I have to sell them the deceptive gold card when many of the items the customers bu go up in price durin gold card week so they really save like 2 percent. then we have to try and sell the crappy sample items at the counter like Omega 3 chews, calcium chews, papaya chews, acai chews, etc... which usually have sugar as the first ingredients and then miniscule amounts or crappy versions of the active ingredient at a massively marked up price. Why would I sell the ActiveCal calcium chews with 500mg of inferior calcium carbonate, hardly any vitamin D and surgar and corn syrup as the first two ingredients instead of a much better calcium citrate with more vitamin d and no sugar/calories? The answer: Because GNC is a greedy company that only cares about squeezing the most out of every customer and in the end couldn't give a [censored] about any of the customer's health. This company is awful. They force part timers making minimum wage to sell the crappy gnc P3 products which for the most part have no commission on them for part timers. If you really don't care about selling people the best products and/or have a lack of knowledge about supplements so you are unaware that what you are sellng is a total ripoff than by all means shop or work at gnc. My last day is coming up and I cannot wait.

I was advised by a friend to try the Mega Ultra Vitamins as my husband is having a problem with energy levels. His iron is good. We have a local healthfood store and after reading this, recommendation or not I am not buying GNC products and have to go through the problems that seem to exist throughout the company and their products.

    gnc is trash.

Only decent buys are marked down products (orange stickered) when its gold card week. BOGO 50% is decent if it also happens to be GC week and u actually need to stock up on those products. eg Protein

I had an employee discount of 30% and still found it hard to shop at the store i worked at instead of vitamin shoppe (whose prices usually matched my employee discounted price) or the internet.

Gnc has always and will always be a ripoff. Even with paying shipping and handling anything I buy off of or would cost less than GNC by atleast 10%.

    Look into these two.

By the way ON's Gold standard is excellent. One of the best lean proteins out there. Cookies and cream is delicious!

I worked for GNC for 27 years and this is what they do with their sales promo's sales run for 2 months. Sale prices are higher the 1st- thur 10th of the month on gold card week! They lower their prices after the 10th so they don't lose their profit margin with gold card and most customers don't notice. They do track select GNC products ( GNC products they make the most money on) and employees are fired for not making the sale of the select products, which causes tremendous presure for the employee to make the sale.

its not tremendous pressure at all!!!you create programs for customers by asking them lifestyle questions you dont just recommend 1 product bc frankly one product does not encompass all of their needs. its such an easy job. all you have to do is have the knowledge which most employees do not and they are so young and immature that they really dont have the capacity to understand this.BUT there are employees who do care and the customers come back again and again bc they trust that person.if someone is paying over a 100 every month they will def say if it is working or not.sooooo take that whatever way you want.if GNC was a horrible company it would not be around after the economy tanked. we have loyal customers and as for the people who left im sorry you encountered ignorant people who are just there for the paycheck but i have customers who only come to me bc im honest and i sincerely want whats best for them AND my numbers for the past 5 years have been above the region average. its bc i keep myself educated and up on current supplements.AND p.s. you get what you put into this job just like any other IF you want to blame your ### performance on the company go ahead bc thats an easy out orrrrr you could just do your JOB its a weird concept but it involves WORK AND sick of excuses by our generation who thinks theyre entitled to ### and they feel they dont have to put any effort in and the customers suffer

I work for GNC. They charge 6 times original retail price for all products they sell. They literally brainwash their own employee's about their products. I know much about nutrition and supplementation and they're just out to see how stupid people are to waste their money on products that dont work. People should practice what they preach. They say common grattitude and courtesy shouldbe given to others since you can receieve it. Time=money=life. Life is short. Gnc rips you off of your life your wasting to make money. We have a certain quota to make for certain stuff like p3 and multi's. GNC tries to get in the multi vitamin business by selling oyu theres. And remember every product they introduce to you no matter how much of a know it all you are, like me, or if you're new to any branch or class of working out or healthy lifestyle, THEY ALWAYS ADVISE YOU TAKE THEIR PRODUCT! It is revulsive I work and have to do this to people in order to make living to even live in this life. It it horrific. So. Im going to tell you allwhat to do. They claim they will match any price by a dollar under. Go to and OMFG theire prices are under HALF for what you would get at GNC for any type of product! Example Optimum Pro Complex at GNC is 89.99-99.99. depending on sales events and coupons are 35.99-56.99 for the same item! So bring a printed out list of what theyre worth, I mean the items is worth you are looking for, off of, print it out and show gnc manager, and they'll call the SSM and verify it. And you will get under a dollar cheaper then what competitiors have it at. And FYI if more people read this, which I hope they do, I hope this is a financial blow to those cocksuckers at GNC.
AND they have a HIGH MARKET VALUE list which tells what items we need to keep track and check when we open and close so as people dont steal them cuz their the most expensive items in the store. And trust they're very few items so if you wanna stealf from them go ahead it will level the playing fields. Dont steal the BSN prodcuts of the glass cases with products in it. Those are slippery lol

I work at GNC as well they make you sell so much of their items and gold cards or they'll fire you. They just fired my boss who is nice just not really management material and hired someone who lied on their application and is known for being an [censor] hole and a trouble maker. I should know I moon light as a bouncer and have thrown his worthless [censor] out of my bar multiple times. Instead of giving the job to someone who already works there which two of us have business degrees. They also do change prices around constantly and hire idiots at their stores. By chance you do get hired there and know what you're talking about and use their product the first time something comes up missing you'll be the one under investigation for stealing cause you use their product. That's a big [censor] you for using our [censor]. GNC well [censor] anyone to make a buck and a lot of our products we make anywhere from 2 to 10 dollars in commition so guess whos paying for that.
