I hired Bryan Dickerson operating in Hillsborough, N.C. in February 2022 to replace three fluorescent lights with can lighting. The job had no complications. Bryan was on the high-end price-wise but didn’t do work at a level that justified it.

Problems started at the bid process. I made repeated calls and emails to Bryan but it took three months to get a bid. We were not able to start the project until about a year later. When I tried to set up a start date, Bryan again did not respond to calls or email. When we finally met, I let him know we had a firm deadline with no flexibility and asked if he would be able to meet it.

He assured me the job would be finished in two days. Work was finally completed after two weeks. I suspect it would have taken longer had I not followed up with Bryan regularly about our deadline.

During this project, Bryan never showed up when he said he would and spent only a short time working before excusing himself for a variety of personal reasons. The no-show was inconvenient since I had re-arranged my schedule to meet him. Bryan also had his father helping him so it was two people in the house at different times during the project – more interruptions than is typical for such a small project.

Even before the job was completed, Bryan demanded payment. I let him know we’d need a day to check out the work (my husband being an engineer and not having had a chance to see it). Bryan, along with his father, became argumentative and hostile and said there was nothing to inspect.

The father, who was supposed to repair the ceiling, left the job half done and said that was what we had agreed to. It was so uncomfortable being around Bryan and his father that I accepted the incomplete work just to be done. It was one of the most unpleasant situations I’ve been in with a contractor.

Also – for anyone with allergies to cigarette smoke – I would advise against using Bryan. The odor of cigarette smoke took a couple of days to clear out each day he worked at our house.
