Blue Diamond Kennels, owners are Melissa Burke and Les Burke
In November, 2010, while traveling, we paid $864 to Blue Diamond Kennels for a dark red female golden retriever and made plans to pick her up a few days later when we returned to our AZ home. Long story short, they got our money and we got NOTHING. As we approached Marana, AZ where they reportedly live, they called and said they would meet us at an Interstate exit because their HOA "doesn't allow visitors". Next call they said they would meet us at Post Feed Store; next call they would meet us at Marana airport; next call Melissa was "driving Les to the emergency room". Les talks a good story. Every conversation included the words "...we have another buyer and if you don't want her, we'll give your money back to you." During the last call, we said we were not comfortable meeting on the side of the road and not having a chance to see the parents. Again they said no problem as they had another buyer and they would return our money.

That was the last phone call where we actually spoke. Needless to say, all future calls we made to them went to voice mail, they have not return our phone calls and emails have not been responded to. They have not returned our money.

Also, PayPal claims to guarantee their transactions. This is not true. We filed a grievance with PayPal. They closed the case saying that the sellers provided proof of shipment, but they would NOT tell us (1) how the puppy [if one ever really existed] was shipped, (2) to where it was shipped [since we did not provide our AZ home address, we're snowbirds from another state], (3) when it was delivered.

We bought our golden 2 years ago. He is beautiful and for the most part, very healthy. As someone else mentioned above, he was immediately afraid of loud noises. I read that fears come in a little later, but regardless, I thought he'd grow out of it. He is still afraid of unfamiliar things & noises, but gets over it quickly. Everywhere we go, people tell us how beautiful & perfect he looks. The vet said this was one dog that shouldn't have been neutered. When he was a puppy, he ate everything: paper, rocks, wood, etc. I read that this can be normal for puppies, but also that sometimes they learn this behavior when not fed enough. I had my suspicions about the Burke's for a few reasons. We had to make the "exchange" at a gas station off an exit. We really wanted to see the parents & where he was kept. We had seen pics via email & immediately felt this was our dog. We paid cash & the contract we were given basically didn't cover us at all for anything. This was our first experience with buying a puppy so we were a little naive. We were told that the papers would be sent in the mail & to allow 2-3 weeks. Each time we called about not receiving the papers, we were given a different excuse as to why we didn't get them. Sometimes, they would revert back to an old excuse, forgetting they used that one already - like the one about falling off a horse & almost dying & going to the ER. My dad used to say that if you're gonna lie, you better remember them. Guess their dad didn't tell them that. They supposedly faxed the paperwork to AKC & because it was Christmas, AKC didn't get the paperwork. Tons of excuses. We finally received the paperwork, but in Feb or March. They kept giving our ph# to people to call us as a reference & because we love our dog & we did finally get the paperwork, my husband would always give a good reference. However, I would get so upset at him, because I felt there was always something a little shady. We are thankful that we received a good puppy. I said earlier that our puppy was for the most part "healthy" because we had to bring him to the vet twice for an enema. Apparently, because he ate the rocks, wood, etc he wasn't pooping properly. He would strain to go & sometimes go a little, move up a few feet, go a little more, etc. He no longer eats wood & rocks & every now & then he still eats paper products, but we put pumpkin in his food from time to time & he goes to the bathroom much better. Again, whether this is related to how he was raised for those 8 weeks or if it's just the luck of the draw, I don't know & don't like to accuse anyone of anything without evidence. Truthfully, if we got the paperwork on time, we'd be giving rave reviews. But the mere fact that they both kept making lame excuses & then forgetting the lies that they told, really turned us off. Also - one last thing, we had to meet them in the Florida panhandle/AL border area. Nowhere near SD or AZ. We are thinking about getting another golden & are so pleased with this one, we'd kinda like to get one from the same parents, but just aren't sure this is the best situation & we just don't feel completely comfortable.

As I have stated in my previous posting, we have a wonderful dog. The fact that some people are having problems with the Burkes should in no way obscure how appreciative we are for having him in our lives. I will repeat, he is a show quality dog. I may have overstepped myself by stating how I feel, but I have attempted to locate Captain Burke (ret.) with no avail. Phone numbers change, websites close down...its a part of business. Its difficult to substantiate all sides of a story (especially when there are 9 seperate postings from different people), from actual fact. The actual facts that I can offer is that my transaction with the Burkes hailed no problems. I paid for a Golden Retriever and received a beautiful Golden Retriever. I have been used as a recommendation not only to the Burkes, but for the demeanor and shape of Tucker. Again, show quality. I have no relationship with Captain Burke or Melissa, simply a one-time transaction which I will attest to time and time again. I hate being drawn into the middle of anything that I am not involved in, but it looks like I may have inadvertantly let that happen. I am sorry for letting my guard down and posting anything durogatory about anybody. I know of only one thing, that I have a great dog and he is a blessing to my family. I said this before and I'll say it again. I hope that whosoever reads any of these postings can realize that. I hate websites like these and I have no idea why I ever posted anything on this site in the first place. My only wish is that transactions be made simple...just transactions. No soap operas, no ambiguity. Simple and clean. I have a beautiful, show quality Golden Retriever and my family is blessed to have him in our lives. Thank you.

I am totally amazed and surprised at what I am reading here. My family bought a Golden from these people almost 2 years ago and he is a show quality dog. He is big, healthy, and very well mannered. His name is Tucker, we received AKC paperwork along with sire and dame numbers from Blue Diamond Kennels in South Dakota. We live in Florida and my disabled son and I travelled up into the panhandle (Tallahassee arae) to meet up with the Burkes to pick up Tucker. We had concerns too due to the missed phone calls and messages. I was told it was due to the cell phone service in the area which I had confirmed when my son and I arrived. The cell phone service was nearly non-existent. I was told all the same stories about the Burkes; retired Naval Captain, vacationing in the area and selling a litter for some extra income. I feel terrible because I am actually being used as a reference for these people and have told up to 8 seperate families some good things about these people. I read all these complaints and feel that I have been scammed even though we received a dog that we intend to breed ourselves. I have to say that I am beside myself and feel terrible. The phone numbers that we have and the websites for these people are all gone now, so I can understand that these people might be some type of travelling scam artists. I did do my research at the time and the website, Blue Diamond Kennels of South Dakota, was valid. I don't know, maybe we are lucky or something like that. I don't think I will be recommending anything other than to notify the local authorities to anybody else that calls for a reference. I have to admit though, we are very blessed for Tucker...he is well-mannered and obedient. He bonded beautifully with my oldest son, Scotty, who is disabled and that is all we really ever wanted. He was housebroken within a week of being home, he thinks of Scotty's well being before his own...if you give him a treat, he will bring it to Scotty before he'll even think about keeping it himself, and he obeys all commands. The dog has never been trained other than being a part of our family. We bring him with us everywhere and consider him as part of our family. We do intend on breeding him and I hope that all the documentation that we have is valid. Other than that, all I can say is to be wary of the Burkes.

We found the "Burkes" ad on domesticsale.com. We were looking for a dark red golden retriever. A man who said his name was "Ray" called us and said they had a male dark red block head golden retriever. He stated he was a retired Naval Academy officer and spoke of his wife "Diane". I spoke with this man several more times and he emailed me pictures of the puppy and pictures of the mom and dad of the puppy(We doubt these were pictures of their actual dogs). After paying a deposit of $432 through Paypal, we received a confirmation of payment from Blue Diamond Kennels. This was the first time we had heard this name so we googled it and that's when the story got ugly. After reading about all the problems and doing some research of our own, we ran across a phone number for "Melissa Burke", which matched the phone number that "Ray" had left on my voicemail for his wife "Diane". We contacted Paypal and our credit card company to get payment stopped. Paypal told us to contact them via email and ask for a refund on our payment. We have done so, but have yet to hear from them. We were told to contact Paypal if we have not received response from them within 24 hours. People be aware!

We clean our dogs pens everyday you have louie your live in whatever do it once a week. So you admit to at least some of the photos of your mutt dogs huh too bad they are all photos of your dogs. At least we do not try to sell our pups on the side of the road at every flea market and trading post in a 50 mile radius out of the back of a truck. Trusting Fool Kathy Mattison Louis Louie We NEVER HAD OUR DOGS TAKEN BY FORCE EITHER and we do not run from anyone obviously there is our akc inspection which is more than you can say. Excuse us for want central heat and air conditioning that worked through the winter. The fact that we had a home that was paid for and had heat and we wer only renting month to month with you made for the wise choice of getting away from the crazies that you are and would bring on the property we were renting. Sorry if we did not want to put our babies in jeoperdy of being taken away since you were only allowed to have 15 of you family pet dogs not breeding dogs on the property since you breed all of your dogs good luck we were renting from you and you told us to find another place. Well since we already owned another place we got away from you. You can choose to have people renting rooms from you that carry baseball bats and beat your dogs but I prefer mine stay in one piece and if you want to keep yours out in the freezing cold all winter and desert heat all summer you have fun. oh I know your pugs and buggles and dashound and bulldogs can take it you left them outside all winter when you have a building you could have put them in and airconditioned or found them homes before they die of exposure. Oh wait I know you rescue dogs that is why you have over 200 of them so many you POA property owners association sueed you, and you have two 40 acres spreads of that that you hide them on. You can't possible build a kennel for yours like we did no that would cut into your profits yours have to live on dirt most cannot even get off of the dirt because they do not have shelter and if they do have shelter it does not have a floor. Your dogs are so nasty and skinny just look at the pictures you run a "grooming buisness" but do not groom you own they are matted and dirty with filth. you feed them feed store garbage and ol roy we feed iams and eukanuba and yes i have reciepts for the last 3 years to prove it.

You are trying to trade your property and move to OR go ahead i have family there that would love to meet you. Yeah good idea staying away from fl and ca they hate puppy mills.

I bought a puppy from them 4 years ago at 8 weeks old and he was the picture of health then and he still is today. They gave me a full health warranty on him but I have never need to try to use it. The is a chocolate blockhead lab and for what I paid for him I could not have gotten a better deal or better quality. I went to their home and picked him out. I recently bought a 8 week old yellow female to be a playmate for him and she is doing great at 12 weeks old now. I went to their home again to get her. They even microchipped both of them for free while I was there and let the two play together in their two acre fenced play area for an hour or so so I could make sure they would get along ok. I don't know you can say they did all of this stuff when they were still at the same house as when I got my male from them 4 years ago. It has got to be the same people because they were here in SD then and now and their names are les and melissa burke.

Sorry, I could not finish the list of breeds that they were last known to have so I will start over: Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers (mainly Chocolate and Yellow), Russel Terriers and Yorkshire. Terriers

I can give you FIRST HAND information about the Berks! I know of a home that they rented, it was spotless when they took possession of it and when they moved out ONLY 4 MONTHS later, the place was TRASHED! There was urine and feces throughout the house, the $1, 400 mattress that was left in the home for them to use was SOAKED from end to end with urine and feces! The home was not fit for man nor beast! ALL walls needed to be scribed and painted and the master bathroom flooring needed to be totally removed and replaced as dozens of attempts to remove the STENCH failed!
DO NOT BUY ANY BREED OF PUPPY FROM THESE PEOPLE!
Another thing as for how they "cared" for their breeding adult dogs, they left them the ENTIRE SUMMER with NO SHELTER from the harsh AZ Summer sun and wild Monsoon rains. They ONLY provided shelter when they found uptown that the AKC wanted to inspect their records and kennels! As for cleaning up the kennels and providing CLEAN water... Well
The last known breeds they had were for course the Golden, Boston Terriers, Russel Terriers,

Please don't buy a puppy from a pet store or Internet site - they are primary outlets for puppy mills, which churn out puppies in shockingly cruel conditions! Responsible breeders don't sell through pet stores or to people they haven't met. You can find out more about how to get a puppy from a shelter or a truly responsible breeder at www.humanesociety.org/puppy or submit your story here: http://www.humanesociety.org/forms/tell_us_your_puppy_mill_story.html.

7 months ago my fiance and I ordered a puppy from the Burkes. She arrived with severe urine scald on the pads of her feet from unsanitary conditions. She could not walk for weeks. She was also treated with neosporin which can give a dog diarrhea if licked off, needless to say she also had diarrhea for a week. In addition to the initial problems she is now full grown at a weight of 45 lbs! According to Burke she is supposed to have been "A large show quality golden retriever.". Not true at all. I have owned 4 Golden Retrievers and not one was as small as she is. Our vet jokes that she is a special breed of miniature golden. Lastly, there is speculation from several veterinarians that she may not be a pure breed golden retriever and the AKC paper may be falsified. Above all we learned that the price we paid was ridiculous when we could have received a better quality pet for a fraction of the price.

Those are not our pups why would anyone put their pups on small pieces of bedding that they could eat and get sick. Denali did not bother coming to pick up her puppy she waited until after we had waited hours for her and her husband to come get their pup and decided she did not want to come pick it up. She finally called the next day to say that she did not want it. Don't worry the puppy got a good loving home that actually wanted her.
