I gotta say, I've been having some major issues with Big Commerce lately. They just keep on charging me for stores that I've been begging them to cancel. But now, it's just a complete joke. I wouldn't recommend anyone to set up their business with Bigcommerce. Trust me, it'll only cause you problems down the line. Save yourself the headache and find a better platform for your online store.

Big Commerce used to be a site where they were always working on developing stuff for small to medium sales sites to grow. But lately, it seems like the development team has taken a long vacation or something. A lot of the things they promised to add have been "In progress" for over a year, and even the features they already have don't work properly. It's a real pain in the neck to try and fix these problems by using their third-party apps that you have to pay for. They just don't get it that there are plenty of other services out there that are easier, cheaper, and better (like, you know, eBay and Amazon) that are already doing what they should be doing. They should be leading the way and showing these services who's boss. If you're just starting out with a small home business, then yeah, these guys are alright, I guess. But if you're planning on going big in the future, you better look somewhere else. Take a look at the forums and you'll see all the issues they haven't fixed in over six months. It's a real bummer, man.

I work for a wholesale biz, and I used BigCommerce for our company website. It don't give a lot of options for our biz model out of the box, BUT I was able to customize it to fit our needs 'cause you can modify the template files easily. Since then I've opened three more stores with 'em. One other thing worth noting is their support is great: the staff and other users will actually answer questions on the community forum, and when I have an urgent problem, Live Chat support is always great.
The downside to BigCommerce is their pricing plans are inflexible: For example, if you want 2GB of storage but not 1,000 products or tons of bandwidth, you can't just pay for more storage, but have to upgrade to the next plan. It don't appear as if they plan to change this either.
There are a lot of other issues (you can check the feature requests in the forum for more), BUT overall it's always been a pleasure dealing with this company, and they're always trying to improve their product. Definitely recommend.
