52& RCA HDTV review: Repair is a nonsense! 168

This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

I purchased a 52" RCA HDTV in 2004 and just yesterday, when I went to turn it on the screen would not come up. There is no sound or picture, I have tried all the options in the owner's manual, but still nothing. I called the customer service team at RCA, but got now where. I informed the rep what the situation was, after she had gone thru all the procedures with out any success, she referred me to an "authorized" repair service in my area. I asked if RCA was going to cover the house call or the repair. She said that since my warranty was over I had to pay out of pocket. It was as if my TV was designed to shut down as soon as my warranty hit its expiration date! Which was 2 months ago. This has never happened before. I have not called the repair people, but come on, the price will be outrageous, we all know that! I think that this is nonsense, i believe that a manufacturer should stand by their product and guarantee the product to work past its expiration date. I would like to get some feedback about this situation.

Having the same issue with my 52inch RCA about 4yrs old. Tried powering it on with remote blinks three time then turn off, try using the unniversal remote for digital box connected to TV same thing happens and it seems to be getting worse today it took me over 30mins before it actually power on. I will try the blow dryer trick.

Bought our 52 inch rca in 2005, paid $1800.00 for the crap of a thing. Just started the blink thing two days ago, what a pain in the butt. Thank you Elaine for the hair dryer tip, it worked like a charm. Sad to say I'll never buy rca again, I've got three 32 inch Panasonics which were bought in the 80's and never so much a prob. with them. RCA YOU SUCK!

I won't rehash the same problems with my 52 " HDTV as it appears we are all having the same issue with not powering on. I think I will try Elaine's hair blower trick.

Suffice it to say that I will never buy another RCA product again. Their customer service is the pits.

Is this class action suit still ongoing?

I cannot believe how many of us have had the same experience with this RCA HDTV 52"! After only 2 years the audio was heard but no picture, then flashing power botton and off it went. I had someone repair it and cost me $400.00. They told me it was a circuit switch that had gone bad. I thought it was a fluke at that time. 5 months later, while watching a movie, flashing lights were lighting up the picture of purple and green and pink. Just flashing while the movie was playing! I am so sick since I waited 10 years for a large screen TV and now I have a piece of junk that cost me $1700.00!

Something has got to be done! The is modern day rip off! I would never have chosen this product had I seen all of these complaints. I am a single mom and have no extra money to replace this and we do not have a televison set to enjoy anymore!

RCA you need to give us all credit towards buying a new television set with a 10 year warranty!

Shame on you!

Wow, mine just started doing the same thing. The green light comes on, I can hear the tv, but no picture then it shuts itself off. I'm going to try the hair dryer trick. I pray that it works as I'm in the same boat as everyone else, no money. I've had the tv for almost three years too and purchased it at Walmart. Count me in on the law suit!

My RCA TV is only 2 years old and all of a sudden it won't turn on. The power button blinks on and off 3 times then nothing. I've tried everything, even called customer service with no luck. They also referred me to a tv repair specialist. What a rip off! I WILL NEVER BUY AN RCA PRODUCT AGAIN. =)

I have the same problem. I turn it on, the light blinks three times and nothing. It takes almost an hour for it to come on of me continuously turning it on and off. By the looks of the complaints, I feel as though one day its not going to come on at all. Keep me informed about whats going on with this.

I had the same problem with the D52W14. It was flashing 3 times and nothing. I used the hair dryer technique (along with the mini vac first) and within 3 tries the TV came on! It took a while to show like normal, but at least its on. Thanks to the one who suggested it!

I’ve have the same problem D52W19B. I got caught in the trick bag. I bought the open box sale, Walmart. The thing had been returned and repaired. Probably for the same problem it has now. When I turn it on goes off and comes back on. While watching programs, it would change channels automatically. Now it doesn’t come on at all. We must start the class action suit. This is a trend RCA and Walmart surely knows about.

Yep RCA sucks! I have the 52inch and problems started with turning off all the time. Then eventually would not turn on and got the 3 blinks and turn off. The next time we attempted to turn it on it started smoking. I took out the circuit board to attempt to replace the flyback and the part labeled on board (CL031) burned up and left a burn hole in circuit board. I could take picture if anybody wants to see. Doubt I want to attempt to fix to afraid this tv is going to burn down my house. I would love to be part of a lawsuit, someone email me if there is such a thing. jeremy_smith1@msn.com
I have directions for removing the circuit board if anybody is interested.

I have a 50" RCA DLP its 2 years old Bought it from walmart first problem was right at the 14 month mark the picture turned all different colors and then went out...Called RCA they said it was the bulb...wasted 179.00 on a new bub and still had the problem...called an auth. RCA repairman he said it was the color wheel and a 500.00 repair. I didnt have the money to fix the TV so I let it go as long as possiable ends up being the problem is the digital board in the back (the brains) of the TV and the board alone is 750.00. So bacically I spent 1300.00 on a TV for 2 years total what a rip off. This is my LAST RCA TV if anyone knowes of a class action lawsuit please let me know

I brought my RCA HDTV about 4.5 years ago from QVC and something was wrong with it the day it was delivered. It was fixed and then it did it again about 4 months later. Again, it was fixed free of charge and now here we are again. Bulb leaked onto the mother board/circuit board and now I smell burned electrical equipment coming from the TV after the whole turn on and off thing, even by itself, it turns on and off so I just unplugged it while waiting for the TV repair person to come. They came, basically told me that my TV is a POS and that it would cost me around $1, 013.00 to repair it. Told me that I would be better off just buying another TV. Its 2009 and I am lucky to have a job and a home that I can afford. I can not believe that I now have to go buy another TV! Not RCA, I can tell you that. I have a Mitsubishi TV in my spare bedroom that was purchased in 1992 and the thing still works. Every now and then it makes an annoying sound for about 1 minute but at least I can watch TV on it! I am disgusted with RCA and will never purchase another item from them!

My RCA is also giving me trouble it does the 3 blinks death thing and just wont go on anymore, mine is also about 3 years old. I called a repair service and it will be over 100 just to come out and who knows how much to actually fix the darn thing. If anyone knows about this class action law suit let me know this isnt right for all of us to just have to give up and buy a new tv some of us dont have the money to just oh well go out and buy a new tv.

We have a 52" HDTV that we purchased in 2005. Since the digital switch, I have used the auto channel scan to find the digital channels. The TV tells me that it has found digital channels, but none of the channels are stored nor can I manually put them in. The one channel that did store once was scrambled and you couldn't make out the picture. It looks like a satellite TV when you're in the middle of a very serious rain storm. The blinking power light happens occasionally but so far it has not been too much trouble. For those of us out in the "woods" w/no cable or satellite, this sucks. One of the reasons we bought it was b/c we knew the digital switch was coming and didn't want to have to worry about "converter" boxes or new TV's.

Same issue with the red green and blue lines shooting accross the screen. I did get into the Service mode on the TV, you can do that by holding down Channel - and volume - on the front panel of the TV with it off, it will then power on and give you a menu of options.

I did notice under EVENTS, there was an event number 36 that occurred 176 times, they could not tell me what that code is and I argued with them about it, I am so mad right now. That seems like a high number a may give me a clue as to what is wrong. I looked all over for the service manual and not about to pay 60 dollars for it on a tv that costed 1300 only 3 years ago. It's ridiculous. If anyone has any info about the codes, email me please.

My D52W15 died just the other day. The three time death blink. I looked online and found this post and decided not to repair it at this time. 4 YEARS OLD. I have a 10 year old Magnavox 27" that still works like a champ. I went out and bought a 46" Sharp LCD and I am happy now. It sur takes up less space and looks better too. Damn RCA for making me do this in such a short time. I am up for a lawsuit. If anyone knows about one or how to start one let me know. dlwnuk@comcast.net

Same 3x problem, I'm setting in the dark in front of the computer and my TV turned off. Where can I purchase the 60 dollar fix? Also, with the ovious recall status of these sets, someone should have a lawyer friend read this thread. Lawyers have money and when their RCA did the 3x trick they bought a new plasma tv. I beleve this really has potential for a recall.
