Quilters Unlimited review: Warning for the disabled and elderly 2

This is a warning for those like me who are elderly and disabled. For a long time I had been interested in joining the Haymarket Quilters Unlimited but was unable due to transportation issues and they meet late one night a month.

I was at the Haymarket-Gainesville Community Library this morning and noticed they were meeting in the library' conference room. I went up to the check out desk and asked the lady there if it was a library activity and she said no. I then asked her if they would mind if I went in to ask how to join. She said I would be able to go in because the library policy is that any group who is having an activity must have it open to all and it must be free. So, I went in and asked one lady who was new to the group. She then got another lady and they both referred me to the head of the group who was very nice and helpful. I asked her how much it was to join and she said normally $30.00 but I should wait to join in May which is when the enrollment is. She said hopefully they are meeting in February here if I want to come. She gave me her name and number to call about when the next meeting at the Haymarket-Gainesville Community Library would be. I thanked her and left planning on paying $30.00 for the next three months.

I went to another part of the library and a librarian comes up and verbally reprimands me for going into a private activity. She wouldn't tell me who complained but somebody in Quilters Unlimited complained.

I won't be doing that now nor ever. I will not be joining a club that acts like a secret society and violates library policies to advance their agenda (whatever agenda that may be). I checked the posted library policy just to make certain I wasn't wrong, and I wasn't.

Be careful because they have vicious people and practices. I did nothing wrong to them. I only asked how to join, how much to join, and where and when they were meeting.

If you want a quilting club, my advice is go elsewhere. You don't deserve to be looking over your shoulder every second wondering who's going to stab you in the back. You don't deserve always fearing who you can trust.

I am very sorry you had this experience with Haymarket QU in the library. I have been a member of the guild for over 10 years and we welcome everyone to participate with us. We hold open quilting Bees in the library community room once a month and everyone, anyone is welcome to come in and join us! We will be having a Bee on this Saturday, March 18th in the library community room. 10a - 4p. And another Bee on March 24th. There is no fee to participate in the Bee in the library. Please, please come and join us on one of those days.
Our regular monthly meetings are held in the Alvey Elem school at 6:30p and we do have a membership fee. You may pay those dues at any time of the year. Jan thru March the fee is half price, as our fiscal year is July thru June. We do not take new member dues in April as we will begin collecting dues for the next year in May, which will be $30 for the 2017-18 year. It is not a monthly fee. I hope you to meet you at the library on the 18th or 24th.

I am sorry for your unhappy experience with the Haymarket QU. I am a member and I drive an hour just to be able to go to this guild. I have found it one of the friendliest and helpful quilting groups around. Which makes me wonder if there was a miscommunication somewhere...you say the first three people you spoke to in the group were friendy and helpful. Don't let the complaint of one person outweigh the other three who welcomed you into the group. Maybe the librarian misunderstood the comment by the member, maybe the member is a ###...her reaction in no way represents the group as a whole. We always have those kinds of people around who pretend to have more say than they really do.
Please come and give us a try, you are very much welcome in our guild. If I knew who you were, I'd personally welcome you, but since it is unlikely that I will ever figure out who you are, you will just have to give us another try. Please come!
