Not Just A Puppy / Joseph Chisholm / Ryan Chisholm / Sahara Reddy review: Unethical dog breeder 4

I was about to pick up a puppy today, and was speaking with someone named Ryan, who's apparently engaged to Sahara with "Not Just A Puppy" - notjustapuppy.org and same Instagram handle, but their/her IG is private.

Ryan was driving down from San Jose/Santa Clara area to meet me today in Valencia, which should have been my first red flag. His number and email show as "Joseph Chisholm" and thankfully I googled that name this morning. Read the terrible reviews on this board about Joseph who has a puppy mill operation, and numerous golden retrievers were sold and are experiencing serious health issues. Ryan said that Joe is his father, he isn't associated with him, etc. etc. I told him I was uncomfortable after reading the reviews, and said I wouldn't be meeting him without further reassurance and documentation on where these puppies came from and their health.

I repeatedly asked for the vet information and AKC numbers for the breeding pair. He couldn't provide either ("his fiancé doesn't want to give the AKC numbers out because then other people could register their dogs"... what?) and is currently threatening to report me to "the proper authorities" for not meeting him to pay him a cash deposit for his drive.

Do not engage with these people. Anyone who drives 7 hours round trip to deliver a dog without a pre-paid deposit is not running a professional operation.

Desired outcome: None

Hi Jessica_OC,
My name is Miriam. I also had a HORRIBLE experinc with Sahara and her UNEITHICAL breeding ways. I was sold a puppy on April 20th. By April 23rd at 3am I was in the ER with my pup who could not breathe. It resulted he has PARVO.. NOT ANEMIA like Sahara claims. It is truly wild to see she twisted this entire story. I kept the puppy because i felt BAD for it. When i arrived to San Jose, the puppy was FLITHY, DIRTY, SMELLY and SKINNY. I paid and took him because I felt BAD leaving him in such TERRIBLE conditions. Shorrty after my 48hrs with the puppy.. he was in the ER with bronchopenumonnia. His lungs had collapsed. He was on 95% oxygen and I was told I might have to euthanize him... the cause was unknown. Parvo was suspected being that he was so young and due to the background I had given them of the poor sanitary conditions I received him in... PCR result showed POSITIVE PARVO. I told Sahara and she did not get back to me for DAYS and the got back to me and sold me a sob story about how "good and clean" she was towards the pupps... well PARVO does NOT OCCUR OVERNIGHT AND HAS AN INCUBATION PERIOD OF 3-10 days POST-EXPOSURE. I was very adamant about having my pup away from my other puppy and clean. I even texted her that same day after the meeting about the dogs drinking and weird poop and she denied any heath conditons.
Back tracking on meeting day... I asked her for paperwork many times. She only handed me a prefilled AKC paper but when I asked her for the shots and records she did not want to hand them to me. She said she would send them later via email... after texting her many times... I finally received the paperwork and contract and that's where I then found out that this pup was from Idaho. I confronted her about it and of course got lied to. She denied to have ANY other issues with other people. I felt it was all shady but decided to do it because I felt BAD leaving this poor pup behind after seeing him... I could not leave him there BUT also did not think that it would have ever gotten this bad. I am not 10k in debt ontop of the 2600 I paid for this pup..
After I reached out to her about the sick dog and the PCR results.. she sent me on a rollercoaster about getting more tests done to prove it was indeed PARVO... I went to many vets who informed me that I was basically being played with and lied to. I have numerous vet records and bills of course- stating that this pup was handed to me ALREADY SICK. I have been veru patient to with her as she never responds back to me. She gave me 500$ to help out with vet bills but then ignored me again. She also offered a refund if i gave her the pup back and I denied it and asked for financial assistance instead because why in the world would I send back a poor pup to those TERRIBLE conditions for? I would never. She then I guesss came on here and twisted the entire story. She sells alot of stories to people I see and they are ALL lies. She does not care for the well being of the pups. She helps run a puppy mill and lies to your face to help her get money from you. She makes many empty promises and does not fullfill. We are now in June and I have yet to hear back from her. Ive called her, texted her- been very patient. I see I am just an idiot and now will be taking measures soon. I plan to make sure that no one deals with them again and will be taking my own measures due to this financial and mental issues this scam has caused me. I have been lied to my face, played with and this is disgusting what she is doing not just to us but to these poor innocent dogs who dont deserve to be treated like this. It is sad that I am 10k in debt and all but I can ATLEAST be at peace with my conscious knowing my pup is SAFE and ALIVE- AWAY FROM THESE UNETHICAL breeders to say the least about what they really are.
Thank you Jessica, you have opened my eyes truly and this was the push I needed to stop being nice about this situation. I will be taking measures now that I have ALL the evidence and vet reports that I needed to build my case. Shout out to you for making this public, I will be doing the same.

Imagine my surprise to find a complaint with my name and looping in nJAP. The pilot program's sole purpose is to help those with the proper support group to find and train a service dog for little to no cost (often it's no cost).

My surprise was having this complaint from a person I've never met or spoken to...

I went into field after my own heartbreaking experience with my first baby girl Bella in 2005. I've read through all of Joe Chisholm's reviews, and my experience follows suit. Here's what I do differently:
- My pups (mom & dad) are homed as pets, working dogs and yes sometimes I use studs.
- I follow pedigree and swab for genetic testing before considering a dog into our program.
- I don't have more than 2 litters with our moms & the second follows if the first pregnancy was smooth.
- I wait a year before the 2nd litter so that I can see how the pups grow, their temperment, trainability and physical structure/beauty (in that order). And we provide free training & pay for training closer to our pup families to keep see how the pups are & to make sure our dogs are GREAT dogs.
- I keep breeder's insurance on any litter I'm involved with so that there's never a "we can never afford this."
- I don't call myself a breeder because I don't have a breeding stock. I firmly believe that one can be better than a breeder.
- & I'm a dog lover! Everyone that knows me knows that I prefer dogs, horses and generally animals to many humans.

Now with all that I do to make sure we have healthy puppies, I cannot say that I've only homed 100% healthy puppies. I have had one pup (from a second litter they too) with loose hips. Imagine my surprise when I found out loose hips aren't covered in the health guarantee! We ended up placing another puppy the following year with that individual esp. since he does nature hikes/wilderness training.

We've had a string if bad luck, I had one family inform me just around the time I was informed of this complaint of am undescended testicle in one of my males (still not covered by health guarantee/insurance) & I explained to them, that if they would cover the neuter portion of the cost we would take the remaining portion if they could wait till he was 13 months. In the same litter, another pup had severe anemia, wasn't eating & every test would come up negative. I requested the family to take her into the ER & that I would covered the bill plus promised a full refund. I only wanted my pup to survive. That family actually ended up keeping the pup even though I recommended not to since we (the vets and countless tests) couldn't pin point what was actually wrong besides severe anemia. Since they wanted to keep the puppy, I offered to cover the pet insurance for 1st year as long as they continue. And the puppy is doing great.

I treat my families as I would want if I were in their shoes always because of Bella. Sadly, I can't say that in future I will never have something come up in my pups... but I can promise that I will do everything possible to ensure I give any litter of ours the best chance by keeping as much diversity in mating parents distance and bloodlines, in rearing and socializing. And to always be available to my families so they can let me know so we can fix or stop certain breeding lines.

This is obviously total nonsense. There are numerous complaints about puppies obtained through this organization - this was just the first time YOU, SAHARA and your company were named. There is a whole other thread with Joseph Chisholm named that I also commented on, and then I created this post to make sure you didn't get away with hurting more puppies and people.

1. How did Ryan Chisholm know YOUR NAME and tell me you were engaged to each other? He said YOU refused to give me the AKC numbers so I wouldn't steal them.
2. “Loose hips” is not a thing. This is hip dysplasia. People who sell purebred Golden Retrievers for top dollar have their breeding pairs tested and registered with the OFA. If you are not a breeder, why are you charging $2800 for a puppy?
3. Sounds like your insurance isn’t helping this other customer of yours . . . where is her refund? Where is her dog?

STAY AWAY and find a reputable Golden Retriever breeder. Do not continue to give this horrible person money to continue breeding sick and dying puppies. Its criminal.

That puppy was MINE. It was not severe anemia it was a campylobacter bacteria that she contracted prior to me getting her which causes anemia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Another dog from her litter had the same issue and I was never informed after countless asks. I am so disgusted to see these reviews from countless people you have scammed. This is so sad.

I have never experienced so much pain to watch my brand new puppy literally start dying. Not only did Sahara make us drive two hours to see a Vet, she kept trying to take the dog back? What is the sense in that? To try to re-home her and act like nothing was wrong?

You have not followed through with your promise to pay insurance and I’m still trying to get that money from you. You are not “available to your families” as you changed your phone number and went MIA so you wouldn’t have to pay as you promised. Your sketchy practices make me question how many other dogs you have put in danger.
