I adopted a Devon Rex kitten (cost ~$2000) from these people last June. Took her to my vet a few days later and they informed me that she was infested with three different kinds of parasites. Despite being aggressively treated for all three at the same time, she lost weight (starting at only three pounds, dropping a total of a half-pound over the next four weeks) and died in July.
I received no reply when I told the cattery that she was so infested (and I must conclude that their kittens are all infested, given the extent of the problem with mine) and got little response when she died. They asked for all of the records from my vet and the emergency vets that tended to her as she died, but never responded to my producing those documents. She offered to sell me another kitten, otherwise made no attempt to resolve the issue.
The total cost of adoption, veterinary services and end-of-life emergency services was over $4000. I want a refund of the purchase price of the kitten at the very least.

Last email from Kelly Vance at nightmagic:
I'm so sorry about your loss. I personally have a kitten from that kittens sister /littermate and she is healthy. The litter I have currently have is from her actually. But it could be a fluke thing. The Devons can be a fickle breed and sometimes it's hit and miss with pairings.
That said, the female here with kittens is related to your kitten. I would feel more comfortable with giving you another kitten that is a complete outcross. I think it helps ease the mind too. Our other location has a female due soon and we haven't had issues with her kittens. Her mother is from lines we've had in our cattery for a long time. Granted your female was out of the other line we had for a long time too. So it's hard to say.
Can you send me the vet records and I'll have my vet go over them to see what they think as well?
I know Devons can be prone to Pancreatitis. As they tend to overeat sometimes and this will trigger it. This would mess with the liver enzymes and everything else you mentioned. Sometimes it's an easy and quick fix but sometimes it can hit them hard and fast and her being a small kitten unfortunately it probably hit her little body hard if that's what it was. I had one mother who would get it from over eating while nursing so we had to be super careful how much she got. But she was fine the rest of the time. But I have seen a few Devons who would just pig out randomly and get them too. It's a fine line because while they are growing you don't want to restrict them. Plants can also do this if they have access to them or other random items. I know my Devons will eat anything they can.

I sent all of the records and bills, but cannot attach them to this complaint. Please let me know how to send them to you.

Desired outcome: Restitution of full purchase price of kitten

Hello. I read last comment from Madamegrainger.

You mentioned “My friend adopted from a little in May….” What did you mean? Where did she get from?

I am in discussion with Kate now re: cat?

Also, You think it is suspicious they operate from 2 locations? Is it?

What location was the poor kitty from. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you very much.

It's hard to know whether to recommend dealing with them or not. I never found the two locations thing to be a problem, and I understand how she doesn't like publicly posting her phone number and address online. That said, her website creates a unique email address for each inquiry, and since we'd talked multiple times there were multiple addresses in my contact list for her. At some point it became impossible to have a conversation directly with her.

I'd say that if you are going to get a kitten you from her you would want to establish an email address that is permanent so you can always reach her, and also explain your concerns about parasites. My cat had had three different kinds of bugs living inside it, and that should simply never happen...

This matter has been resolved to my satisfaction. There had been some confused communication and when we further discussed it, Kate agreed to a full refund.

I am so sorry for the loss of your cat and that they did not rectify this situation. I took home a cat in August 2021 from Nightmagic who was found to have a parasite- giardia. The cat came with it, did not get it in my home. Thankfully after antibiotic treatment he was fine, but Kelly had a lackluster response to me as well so I cannot say I am surprised. My friend adopted from a little in May and her cat was found to be completely healthy. I think they have two locations operating and it does seem rather suspicious.
