Gofundme.com review: Be wary in donating money 12

I lost my love one my daughter lost her mom and someone from her mom family made a go fund me for my daughter my daughter never knew about it she never seen a penny from it and that $5000 is gone with no Itemized description of where it went. And like we’re not going through enough as it is people like to make things harder

I feel that I should be able to talk to a live person when there is trouble with donations. There was a person with a picture of himself the name of Sam he says that he was from Trustworthy Help Department. I did everything ask of me. I am talking with Veteran Administration Department - The United
States Government and (DARPA ) Defense Advance Research Projects Agency. I saw (3) different donation amounts of $3, 000 without names after my test donation under my name Diana Foreman, Cleveland, OH. This has been going on now for 5.5 months. I agree with SimcaSue, what happened to the presumption of innocense? Not only that but from my understanding the money was suppose to go to the families, and not the "accused". Obviously this is a liberal web site. They are so tolerent. lol.

GoFundMe shut down the Baltimore Police Officers funding by saying they don't qualify, even though there is no proof they did anything wrong. in fact, just the opposite. I wouldn't put money through this organization for anything after that.

I think a lot of people commenting on the GoFundMe.com site have not really researched it. First of all, it clearly discloses that they take 5% for fees and the company that manages the credit card donations takes 3%. That is all standard practice and very reasonable. Go to charitynavigator.com and look at some of the larger charity funds like Wounded Warrior Project and you would be surprised to find out that only 57% of the donations received go to the actual wounded warriors. As far as the person who's friend won't give them the money and wants to control it themselves, that is a personal problem. Obviously your "friend" is not very ethical and is taking advantage of you and the individuals that donated. It is very easy within the website to setup the withdrawals to go only to the person who the fundraising is meant for. If anyone should be sued, it should be the friend who kept the donation money. I do agree that the person who is setting up the fund MUST have the consent of the individual to whom the funds are being collected. This is definitely a shortcoming in the system. Because there are so many unethical people in this world the fund needs to be set up only with the persons knowledge and then the money must be deposited only in that persons account.

I posted a GoFundMe fundraiser for my friend Diana who lost everything to a fire and it was very simple to give her total access to the funds and she has been able to withdraw the funds with no problem. They absolutly do not charge more than the service charge they advertise. I'm very happy with it, and so is the recipient.

I agree, I am going through a nightmare with Go Fund Me right now. Because someone an aquinetance decided to just make a Go Fund Me site for me for much needed medical expenses for a brain surgery that I am having ina a couple weeks, without my permission or knowledge. First that right there should be wrong unless for a parent doing it for a child or for a furbaby. This person took me to 2 appointments using the fundraising money. Next she didn't even have the right information on my fundraiser. When I decided to let a family member take me to a few of my appointments to prepare for this surgery this girl became irate when I asked her to politely to have the money transferred to me to use as it come in to plan things out. She said she was controlling the money she would give it to me as I needed it, I told her to shut it down at first she refused then I told her then she was doing it without my permission so she said she would BUT not before the one only update on the fundraiser and it was nasty calling everything lies, defacing my name, embarrassing me, not to mention ruining my chances at having a successful fundraiser. I still have not seen the rest of the money which I worked out with the information she vaguely gave me that she used $100 for each trip for gas when the most would have been $40. I would really like to see if I and others can start a Class Action Against Go Fund Me for their unethical practices. All they care about is the money they make and their success stories but don't tell the stories of those that it doesn't work out to good for .

Just to correct the info above, if you go to gofundme.com and go to their frequently asked questions section, it shows right there that they take 5% commission on all the donations (that covers the web hosting platform and their profit margin, which I think is quite reasonable). The merchant account credit card fee is another 3% (which is industry average and not at all unreasonable). That's a total of 8%. If you raise $1, 000, for example, you'd get $920.00 (total fees of $80.00).

I'm not sure how the person above came up with the idea that gofundme gets 75% of the money. It is simply not true and it's all on their site, very transparent for all to see up front. Hope this helps! It is a great site to use if you are raising money and certainly the cost is outweighed by the convenience of being able to accept credit cards.

Be wary of your donations and keep your emotions in checked. The company takes a cut then the fund is turned over to the person who started the fund me campaign so they are in full control of the money. The actual person they use as a reason for the fund me may never see a penny of the money and there is no control over this that are in place to prevent this. A con artist can have a field day with the obituary. I actually know somebody who did this and I'm totally disgusted with what happened because that person was able to raise a lot of money on multiple occasions by playing people's emotions including people she knew and people she doesn't know by posting the FundMe link on Facebook.

I agree. Also, the person who started the fund me has complete control over the money that's distributed from the site so the person they are raising money might never see that money. Internet Panhandling. I wonder what the income tax consequences of all this.
