Eggies review: The nightmare of the “Eggies” product 2

This product is so bad, words almost fail me.

1 – The containers leak during cooking…and YES, I did assemble them properly.

2 – The yolks settle in odd places during cooking, so don’t expect to make a decent deviled egg. The yolk will not be nicely centred at the top of the egg; expect it to be more along the wall/side. This is due to the imbalanced floating posture of the cups.

3 – Each container is four pieces that you must re-assemble each time you want to make eggs. Multiply that by six containers, and it takes half an hour to prepare the containers. By this time, you could have boiled the eggs the old fashioned way.

4 – The commercial says it’s a non-stick cup, and then tells you that it is mandatory to grease the inside of the cup before cooking. That is NOT non-stick, and if I wanted grease in my eggs, I would have fried them.

5 – Even when greased, the eggs do not just pop out as demonstrated. To get a decent, clean pop-out, you have to run a knife along the inside wall of each cup.

6 – It takes too long to clean the cups after use. You have to remove and clean under the rubber O-rings that seal the cups, or you’ll be left with egg crust inside. I’m no doctor, but I’d say it’s not good for you to include bits of rotting egg under the O-rings with each new batch of eggs you cook. And by the way, you pretty much have to scrub the screw-together threads with a toothbrush to get all of the residue. It actually took more than half an hour to clean the set of six. I wouldn’t put them in the dishwasher – it might melt the soft O-rings or warp the cups. Ever put plastic utensils in the dishwasher?

All in all, this is one of the most misadvertised product I have ever bought. Obviously, I was out of my mind not to have read the reviews before buying.

Do yourselves a favour and walk right on by from this one. Nasty, nasty product. Peeling eggs may be an unpleasant task, but compare to the nonsense involved with these things, I’ll take peeling any day.

PS…we did some internet research and found out that all of these “We’ll throw in a second set for FREE…just pay separate shipping and handling” products all come from the same manufacturer. So do yourself an even bigger favour – if they offer you a second one for free, it’s part of the same scamming company.

I don't know why people would consider any other container better than the natural egg shell for hard cooking a perfect egg. I steam mine for 10 minutes and they peel perfectly. That said, if you're on a low cholesterol diet and using only packaged egg whites, but still want hard cooked egg for egg salad or topping for a salad, these are ideal.

For myself, cholesterol isn't the issue. My issue is I have a glut of eggs from my chickens in the spring. Rather than let then go to waste or give them all away and have to buy grocery store eggs later, I freeze a lot of them for use when the heat brings production down to almost zero. Since the frozen eggs are no longer in their shells to hard cook the natural way, these Eggies come in really handy. I love the fact that I can still have my hard cooked eggs for egg salad, salad toppers, even deviled eggs, albeit a bit differently shaped ones.

'Greasing' the inside with a dab of oil on a paper towel puts a minute amount of oil in the container and just makes them slide out better. The first batch I used them I forgot to grease the inside but they still came out intact with some minor coaxing with a soup spoon. Cleaning them wasn't an issue, either. I used a soft toothbrush and plain old hot soapy water and everything was done in just a snap.

The threads are rather tightly gauged, probably for the specific purpose of preventing leakage, so it takes a couple times to get the little tops on but none of mine have leaked. Because my eggs are large, fresh and the yolks are firm, the yolks have actually gotten hung up in the mouth of the little opening so I found that it was easier to just leave the Eggie in the two halves and fill them that way, rather than use the little opening at the top, Less egg ended up on the outside and the seal was good.

In a nutshell, I haven't had the issues the above posters seemed to have had so I don't know what they are doing differently to cause their issues. I'm very happy with the product.

I am having difficulty in closing my eggies, and because they won't close the eggies get water in then and the eggs don't cook properly and we can't eat them. This is my 2nd set of eggies, and I have had no problems with the 1st set.
