I saw Dr. Byrce Johnson twice for a herniated disc in my neck. I should've listened to my husband who hated the doctor from day one. This guy knew I was in serious pain. I hadn't slept in over 3 weeks and my primary doctor (wonderful dr) had me on the strongest pain killers he could prescribe and physical therapy, all of which did nothing to alleviate my pain. I couldn't drive, walk, or sit without wanting to cry. My primary dr had me off of work for a week until I could get in to see a surgeon. At our appointment, when we asked Dr. Johnson to continue my leave for ONE DAY until we got my MRI results, he calmly said, 'I wouldn't feel justified in doing that." My husband and I were horrified at his lack of care or concern. Luckily my primary dr took care of the extra day.

Then, when I went back in to see Dr. Johnson to get my MRI results, he stunned me again with his lack of care or concern. He said my [problem was serious and we could either operate immediately or try a steriod shot first. I opted for the steriod shot. When I asked him about a note for work, he had his nurse give me (he didn't even come back in to talk to me) a note that said, "Driving will worse her condition. She MAY having trouble doing her job." Then he sent me home without any pain meds or anything!

Now, any half-way decent doctor would know that was pointless. If I had kept working and got worse, I would have sued him since that would have been his poor judgement.

Fortunately, I did my research and found a really good surgeon who has performed over 8000 surgeries and knows what he's doing. On my first exam with him, he was shocked at my muscle loss (something Dr. Johnson never checked for). My new surgeon promptly took me off work, gave me painkillers, started me on treatment, and he CARES! My husband was surprised at the difference between these two doctors.

Dr. Bryce Johnson is a terrible doctor. But considering that his office is located in the middle of a retirement community, I suppose he doesn't have to worry about being a good doctor, since patients will keep coming.

Stay away from him and go to Newport Orthopedic Group instead.

Yes, he seems to not care and has his PA do perform your initial exam. In my case, I had a neck surgery and they forgot to use a special filter on one of the batches of surgical instruments they used on me for surgery. I was visited by Dr. Johnson, the head of the surgical unit, the hospital attorney, and the head of infectious diseases the first day while recovering from surgery and told that nobody would know if I was going to contract a deadly staph infection at the base of my brain and spinal cord for a couple of months, but not to worry because the chances were slim I would...hahahahahaha! Can you imagine living with that stress for two months while trying to recover from having three levels of your neck fused? I return three years later because the nerves in the back of my neck where I had the surgery are acting a lot. They started acting up about sic weeks after the surgery when i was allowed to take my neck brace off, but it is much worse now. It turns out one of the plastic wedges Dr. Johnson placed between by C4-C5 vertebrae broke and the bone graft grew around it after. His PA told me not to worry about it. I think maybe II might need to see another doctor unaffiliated with Saddleback Hospital (The worst Hospital ever) and Dr. Johnson's medical group called South County Orthopedic Specialists and also talk to a Medical Malpractice attorney. That plastic wedge should not have broken like that. If he had properly secured the vertebrae with titanium cages after, it would not have. Instead, he tried to take a short cut with a junk device at my expense.
