Stein Mart - racial profiling

As I shopped in store #67 located on Highway 280 in Birmingham, Alabama Friday, November 26, 2010 I noticed that two black female associates were watching my every move. I was so uncomfortable that I began to move around in different departments to make sure I wasn't being racially profiled. I'm a teacher with several different degrees and including Juries Prudence who has successfully passed a background check and would not jeopardize my career by no means to steal. I'm a frequent Stein Mart shopper and have spent thousands of dollars shopping in these stores since they opened in our area. I don't appreciate being followed around like a common thief. I reported this incidence to the manager (Robby Cain) who was very arrogant, nonchalant, and made excuses for the associates. An apology should have been rendered for the associates conduct instead he gave me his card to report this incidence to you. This manager need to realize that the customer is always right and professional people like me who can afford clothing in this recession, help to keep this store open. If we stop shopping this store will close like other due to low customer sales. I don't appreciate my experience and would like for this matter to be investigated as soon as possible.

The purpose of the comment was to enlighten Stein Mart Affiliates of the way the store manager and associates at store #67 treat some of the customers. It was not receive negative feedback from individuals who think that it is okay to discriminate against others. Moreover, it is apparent that all stores suffer from shrinkage, although there are honest people in our society that are not shoplifters. Everyone deserves an opportunity to be treated fairly with respect. It is shame that only one intelligent person from another country was actually able to coherently read and understand the purpose of the comment.
As to the comment they can watch who they want to watch; as a former retail sales associate, only store security has the authority to follow customers around in stores. Store security is trained to place you under surveillance very discreetly so that the customers are not uncomfortable while they shop.
As for the rest of the individuals that commented negatively, unfortunately your narrow mindedness and prejudices are some of the reasons why these individuals manage this store in a discriminating manner. There are other customers that have shopped in this particular store that have had the same experience. Your opinion is worthless; these comments were not geared toward you but to Stein Mart Affiliates

you sound very stuck up. They could’ve been looking at you for whatever reason, maybe they thought you needed help because you were frantically moving department to department occasionally glancing at them to see if they were watching. If I saw some lady running around the store looking at me I’d be very worried.

I also work at Stein Mart. Our job is to pay attention to our customers, offer help or suggestions, and provide good customer service. Now when I am shopping somewhere I would never be appalled with extra attention or service because that's what the sales people are there for! They should greet you and offer help and make you feel special! Luckily, Stein Mart offers online shopping now so that you can shop from home and not be bothered with the hustle and bustle of other individuals. No one ever "looks" like a criminal or thief but it does happen more often than we would like! This situation is unfortunate however there wasn't anything I would credit as substantial wrongdoing from the company.

MunkeyHunk... bro, I was management at Stein Mart and how you still manage to hold a job their is beyond me. I've worked with loss prevention and even I witnessed counts of racial profiling from employees. I personally suspect that everyone is a thief initially, no discriminating. But there were times my manager would tell me to keep an eye on the one Hispanic customer in the store and I'd ignore him/her to go after someone who was actually acting suspiciously. It does happen, it is there, and just because it doesn't happen at your store doesn't mean it doesn't happen in the entire corporation. So stop being an ### and insulting the intelligence of someone online and get on with your life.

As for the complaint, contacting corporate or HR probably won't get you anywhere. I'd take it to EEOC.

Everyone except the Irish dude is right. You want the employees to apologize for doing their job? You probably were stealing. I work at Stein Mart and I'll tell you that we don't watch people unless they are obviously doing something wrong. You have to really try to get our attention. So you should just stop trying to steal something and get on with your life at a store where they will kiss you ### even though you are no better then the people that work there. Although with your "many degrees" you should have already realized all of that.

You're a teacher? Please tell me that you don't teach humans? And it's "jurisprudence", commonly known as JD or "Doctor of Jurisprudence", although and MJ is available (I think that Loyola offers it).

Just take a deep breath, continue shopping and ignore the people following you and all will be well. Or you can randomly filt from department to department which will make the security people suspicious and more likely to follow you. Wait a minute, that's what happened.

I'm new to this site but already I'm horrified by the manner in which you communicate with each other. I'm based in Ireland and I can honestly say that on similar sites the users tend to address each other in a way that they themselves would like to be spoken/written to. If this is the tone and level of communication skills of this site, I'd prefer to go and get myself a stiff drink in order to forget that such communication skills exist in a world where the violence of american tv and film are fed to us on a daily basis as tho, we were are being conditioned to behave to one anothere as you do. Is this the image you care to give to us of your country and how you treat each other?

and 'This manager need to realize that the customer is always right' is bull. Actually after customers started scamming everyone this saying is not true anymore. The customer is NOT always right and they need to follow rules and realize that the store has them
