I hired Cayer Contracting, (Capreol, Ontario owned by Shawn Cayer) to remove snow from my roof on March 6th 2019. They charged me 450$ and told me that included all the cleanup around the front and back of my house. I thought I was hiring a great local company, supporting a small local business, thinking they would have a lot of integrity not only because it is a small town and everyone knows them but because your own name is on the front of the company.. But how wrong I was.
At one point while I was standing in the kitchen I watched a black square fall into the snow pile as they were slamming their shovels down hard into my brand new roof, trying to chip away the ice I guess, (something they told me they wouldn't be doing because it was not good for the roof). I have retrieved the shingle, as well as I took a picture as fast as I could after it fell and then I had a reputable roofing company look at all the mess.
After they were done, I noticed that they were trying to leave as fast as possible and were not coming to talk to me about the job. I then noticed a 6 foot hard pack pile of snow pressing up against my double glass doors on my deck (I have lots of pictures, it was very scary). I then ran outside to catch him before he drove off and voiced my concerns about the door, he then told me "it should be fine" as he closed his truck door and drove off.
Not satisfied or feeling comfortable with this safety issue I then called his Partner Sherry Dawson, the person I had been in contact with and paid for the services via E transfer to.( They refused to give me a receipt after as well but I do have the statement in my bank account showing the money being accepted by them.) Also noticing that they left huge hard chunks of snow on my roof that were teetering on falling off onto my head or my daughters.
I called her twice and left a voice message and then proceeded to send her a text (this is the way we were corresponding prior to the service) with a picture of the doors stating my concerns. They never called or texted me back for the rest of the day and half of the next day when I finally sent a last text saying "I have hired another company, Thanks ! " and they still did not respond. I then wrote a review on their Facebook page, which they responded with accusing tones towards myself and statements that had nothing to do with the issue at hand or how it was being handled.
I then find out through mutual friends that they are spreading around that I am a "crack head" along with other things, I find this very amusing because I am very accomplished for my age and the only time we ever spoke was when he said "It should be fine" before driving off. This just shows that you can't talk to these people or mediate at all because it gets ugly.
I also had some concerns about their insurance and when I contacted the company Wawanesa through Cambrian Insurance to inquire and make sure that the people on my roof were insured (The boss sat in his truck the whole time and did not supervise his workers, which I later found out were random kids he recently hired off of Facebook 2 weeks prior), and then things got very shady feeling and they did not call me back, making me even more suspicious.
After posting my review on Facebook (something I honestly never do) a lot of people came out of the wood work to say they've had horrible experiences and been ripped off by the same company, something needs to be done, they are taking advantage of people trapped by all this snow and leaving them worse off than before they started.
Something needs to be done, I am also aware of legal actions that have been taken towards this company with coming court dates due to $40, 000 damage to another home, and our homes are not the only ones.
