I purchased a maltese puppy from the breeder Tammy Tomson of Silver Brook Maltese for $5, 000. I signed a contract on 8/1/17, paid if full by 8/15 and picked puppy up on 8/26. Corresponded with Tammy throughout process. Drove almost 7 hours to pick up puppy during which time Tammy casually mentioned dog's mother had had giardia but didn't make much of it. Brought puppy to vet on 8/28 and on 8/29 the test came back positive for giardia. I come to find out that it is a extremely contagious illness that is very difficult to get rid of. I have 2 other dogs that were exposed. Any item that came into contact with puppy needed to be washed and disinfected with Clorox. Had to leave work early on 8/29 to bring puppy to vet again. The puppy also has double ear infection and a herniated umbilical cord - neither of which was discovered or diagnosed by the breeder and breeder's vet. I feel that it was the breeders responsibility to tell me upfront about the puppy's exposure to the illness and possible infection. She should have allowed me to make a decision as to whether I wanted to take on a puppy with an illness that could be easily spread to my other dogs. We were corresponding for a month before pick up. She had all the opportunity in the world but I believe she kept this information from me because she feared if she told me about it, I would pull out of the sale. Now, with a sick puppy that I have become attached too - the breeder is only giving me 2 options, return the puppy and get reimbursed the $5, 000 (an option I believe she knows I will not take her up on) or take a $500 refund and she will pay me the $500 in installments over a 30 day period. If she can't pay me $500 in 1 lump sum - how could she reimburse me $5, 000 if I actually returned the puppy? I think she falsely advertised the puppy and charged top dollar - claiming the puppy was healthy. In return, I received a sick little dog who may have potentially spread the illness to my 2 other dogs. She's offered me 2 unacceptable options. I feel like I have been a victim of a bait and switch which involves a little puppy that I am incapable of returning bc of the emotional attachment I have formed. I think Tammy banked on this.

I want a 50% refund of the purchase price. That is $2, 500. The vet bills are mounting and giardia often times needs to be treated with multiple rounds of medication to get rid of it...so it is unclear as to when I will be able to eradicate this issue. She would be left with $2, 500 - a decent amount still - given I was sold a sick dog.

Tammy and I have resolved this situation. She refunded me a acceptable amount for the medical issue. She has said she has tested all current puppies and they are negative.

You said yourself owner told you about it. Not her fault at that point. Sounds like she did everything right.

I'm the owner silver Brook Maltese Maltese these are the facts. I myself purchased a puppy from another breeder that brought giardia in the my home. I worked weeks disinfecting and treating my dogs. I have evidence from my vet how many times I have tested and medicated my dogs. Before tge pup left, We had a negative test performed before this woman came to my home and picked up the dog. She sat in my living room and I explain to her what happened that she had the option to leave the puppy with me for a while longer and make sure that everything was okay. She opted to take the puppy because she said it was a long drive and I gave her extra medicine to take home just in case to continue treating the puppy because when puppy travels they can get stressed and this can make Giardia revive so to speak. My dogs live in the very very clean environment. As for the hernia my vet considered it to be mild and they usually close on their own. Since this puppy was picked up in person by Emily she had the option not to take her. I am sorry the puppy came down with Giardia again but I truly did my best to make sure she was okay and try educate the buyer to make sure she understood what their concerns were. Thankfully we no longer have the situation and I hope Emily your puppy is fine now.

You paid 5 grand! for a puppy with a herniated belly button? Layed out 5 GRAND!...sight unseen, no less? You need to just leave your money with me for safe keeping. You (let's say) "get attached" to things a little too easily. Trust fund baby, are we?

Emily, I'm so sorry you are having this horrible experience. Unfortunately, this happens quite often and people pay EXTREMELY HIGH prices for these "pure bred" puppies only to find out later that they are from puppy mills. A friend of mine just went through the same thing you are. Giardia comes from drinking and eating contaminated water & food. Not only is it contagious to the other puppies but it is also contagious to humans and should be reported to the Dept. of Agriculture.. My friend notified, The Puppy Mill Project, The Humane Society, C.A.P.S (Companion Animal Protection Society), the Dept. of Agriculture and The Attorney General. She also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. In addition check of the puppy lemon law. It is so disgusting how these animals are treated and how they are deceiving people. DON'T SHOP, ADOPT! EVERY BREED has their own rescue and adoption is over $4, 000 less than what you paid. If people keep buying these puppy mill dogs it's only keeping them in business. Behind that cute puppy there is a mother in a cage suffering and when she's done breeding they will shoot her! Good Luck hope this helps
