We purchased a Newfoundland puppy from Belle Harbor Newfoundlands in April of this year (2018). We paid $2, 500 for the puppy. Dawn wanted a $500 deposit immediately to hold the puppy, which we sent immediately. She then asked for cash for the remaining balance, when we picked up the puppy, which we accommodated. We signed a contract with Belle Harbor, which states, ...

"Seller will guarantee against crippling hip dysplasia up to one year of age. This is defined as the inability to function as a pet and is clinical dysplasia. This diagnosis must be agreed upon by the purchasers licensed veterinarian and the sellers veterinarian. The seller may request the opinion of an orthopedic specialist. Radiographs must confirm the diagnosis. The condition cannot be a result of injury incurred due to slippery floors, stair climbing, children riding on the dogs back or any other activity that would cause injury. If surgical correction or euthanasia is recommended, the seller will replace the dog with a puppy of equal quality as soon as one becomes available or refund the purchase price at the sellers choice if the condition is agreed to be genetic by both veterinarians. This guarantee becomes null and void if the dog has been used for breeding or is overweight."

At 8 1/2 months old our puppy was diagnosed with bi-lateral elbow dysplasia. I immediately called Dawn (November 2nd, 2018) and made her aware of the diagnosis. I also sent her the radiologist's readings along with the x-rays. During that conversation she told me I would get a refund for the puppy. On November 5th, I called her again and told her we had scheduled surgery for our dog for November 29th. She again said I would get a refund and it would even pay for the surgery. She also said, she couldn't send the refund until December 1st, because she was on a fixed income and her Social Security check didn't come until then. Plus she had a litter of puppies and the first puppy wasn't getting picked-up until December 7th. I accepted her explanation, feeling she would honor her word.

On November 27th, I sent Dawn an email, reminding her of our puppy's surgery and that I expected the refund by the December 1st.

Well December 1st came and went, without any communication with Dawn. On December 2nd, I sent her another email, asking the disposition of my refund. She responded in an email, informing me that "unforeseen circumstances" has delayed the refund and I would get it on December 17th. I wrote back and told her that was unacceptable and she had until the December 10th, that 6+ weeks for the refund was sufficient time. Also, that she should not enter in to contracts, if she could not honor them. Since that email, I have not heard a word from Dawn and have not received my refund, although we have spent well over $4, 000 in medical bills for a genetically impaired dog.

AKC cannot do anything about your refund however Dawn Blaine has a special registration with AKC and a complaint can be filed with custregsup@akc.org. More voices heard, she will stop stealing money.

A follow-up to my previous post of December 18, 2018.

I finally received my refund from Belle Harbor Newfoundlands, on or about December 20th. Since that time our Newfoundland (Noah) has somewhat recovered from his elbow surgery on his left leg. In February 2019, we had him neutered, which was major surgery because his tesiticales had not dropped. Subsequently the recovery period was longer the expected.

Additionally, because Noah has Dysplasia in his right elbow, his limping has continually gotten worse. Because he had such major surgery for his neutering, we have been unable to get his right elbow repaired. Thus, we have been giving him Laser Therapy and plasma injection, along with the maxium dosage of Gabipentin, Rimydil and Tramidal in oder to control his pain and inflammation.

Last week his limping was so sever on his right side, I asked the Vet to take x-rays. Unfortunately, the x-rays revealed that Noah has moderate-severe arthritis in both his elbows and HIP DYPLASIA on the right side. Additionally, the radiologist noted that his knee caps are mis-aligned.

To say I am angry is understatement! Noah has never been able to be a puppy and now, at 15 months old, he will never be able to be a normal dog. Not once has Dawn Blaine contacted us to check on Noah's condition, which she is aware of.

Noah is from the litter of Knickers, Belle Harbour's so-called Champion, and Rose of the Sea. We have informed Dawn that these two dogs should never be bred again, because of the severe congenital defects Noah has. If you have a puppy from this litter, I would appreciate if you would please contact me, to see if your Newfie is also affected. I can be contacted at, rsmith@themecgroup.com.
