Good afternoon, I was told one thing on the phone by Gabriela and another by Mindy after my move. I was told that I was fortunate that there was a truck in Renfrew doing another move and so I wouldn’t have to pay for a truck to go out - just the return. I was also told that since I wasn’t moving any appliances that it wouldn’t be the typical 6300 lbs, based on the items it would be between 2000 and 3500 lbs. All the movers I called told me the same thing because I wasn’t moving appliances. Gabriella then Said that she would estimate at 2000lbs and together we agreed that to be on the safe side we decided to do 2500 lbs

I understand that a standard 2 bedroom may be 6300 lbs, however, when hearing what I was moving the moving companies gave estimates for anywhere between 2000 and 3500 lbs because I was not moving any appliances, when speaking to all 6 companies and getting quotes from many more with them all saying similar things including Gabriella who took the time to explain that she would quote based on no appliances. I decided to go with them because she was pleasant and we went through everything including the charge for stairs outside - never a mention of a charge for stairs. Even responding when I asked the question about additional charges. She said that they would weigh after and I even asked how can they weigh if there is another home on the truck. She then said the movers usually have an idea and I believed when she said she didn’t think it would be more than 2500 based on the items indicated because other movers told me the same thing. I did budget for up to 3500lbs, just because I wasn’t sure if I was driving down or flying. If I flew then I would have had more boxes as indicated when I spoke to Gabriela. I had told her between 7-10boxes, however I drove so some all except 4 boxes went in the car. The other consideration was that there storage facility is literally 5 minutes from my home in Toronto.

In speaking to Mindy, she was very condescending, rude and threatening, telling me that there is an industry norm and couldn’t or wouldn’t acknowledge what I had been told by Gabriela regarding the weight without appliances. She asked why I didn’t use my sons company since he is a mover which is no ones business. I actually have people at two men and a truck and didn’t use them because AYC Move said that since a truck was in Renfrew already I didn’t have to pay two way transportation - something I also tried to tell Mindy. At least that is what she told me her name was. I did ask to speak with an owner or supervisor she said “that’s not going to happen then I was asked “if your cell phone broke, would you call Steve Jobs”

Obviously not, however, when I believe I have been wronged I will escalate up the chain of command.

My son who is a mover estimated at about 2300 lbs as coming here I had 3000 and I was not moving some of the things that came this way. While prices go up, the weight of things don’t. As to the question of why I didn’t use his company. I didn’t feel it was a question that I should have been asked - it isn’t anyone’s business but he is on paternity leave and there was no availability as this was a last minute move.

Contents were

1 queen bed+mattress and box, frame and headboard, 1 double with same as above, I twin with headboard, frame with drawers and mattress no box spring -

(The twin bed was the only thing lived from the basement.)

There was 3 night tables, 2 dressers with one mirror, 1 Chest of drawers.

1 dining room table that they disassembled and 6 chairs, a sectional faux leather couch 3 pieces (2 seats and an ottoman)

4 boxes - 1 had blankets, 1 had cushions and a vase which movers packed, 2 others with pictures in frames, none heavy and 1 garbage bag with pillows, 2 plastic Muskoka chairs.

I am prepared to escalate this as no one should be taken advantage of at any time and I believe that this company is doing just that. As you can see a copy of this is also being sent to CTV and CBC as well as the RCMP anti fraud unit as I believe what is being perpetrated on unsuspecting people is fraudulent. If I am incorrect, I will gladly apologize

I have no issues paying for services I receive as I believe that workers should be paid properly, however, this is not that.

I was also threatened with storage fees if I don’t pay the $3,870 + by tomorrow at 3pm.

Since then I was sent an email saying that I owed over $4000 and just a couple minutes ago a text message asking if I received an invoice and it needed to be paid by noon tomorrow.

I would appreciate a call or a response ASAP.

Thank you

This is extortion.

Desired outcome: Adjustment of payment

Yes, it’s fraud and extortion. I actually have the main mover on my move admitting to it on camera from a very kind neighbour who i asked to come video tape. If you would like to contact me by commenting here i would love to team up with you and any others and go to the media.
