Subject: Watch Out for Car Rental Damage Charge Shenanigans in Ireland
Planning a Trip to the Emerald Isle,
As someone with deep roots in Ireland and a recent traveler there, I want to share an important heads-up that could save you hundreds (or thousands) of euros on your next visit. Unfortunately, car rental "damage" disputes have become a frustratingly common headache for tourists, including many from the U.S. and Irish-American community.
I recently rented a car in Ireland (Alamo/Enterprise/National in Shannon) and was hit with a charge for pre-existing damage upon return. I did not cause any damage to the vehicle. I thought I had thoroughly documented the vehicle's condition with photos which were provided to them. Despite this, the company pursued the claim. I reached out to the Car Rental Council of Ireland who said they would investigate and have stated they are still researching the issue.
The rental car companies can afford to ignore your claims because they know your options are limited. I am not going to travel to Ireland, engage a solicitor and take them to small claims court.
I have come to realize the rental companies are not in the car rental business but the insurance business. I used my Navy Federal Credit Union Visa credit card and waived the auto rental Collision Damage insurance only to find out later that Ireland is one of the only countries specifically listed as an exception. Why is that? NFCU blamed Visa, Visa referred me back to NFCU so we can only assume there was too many complaints to make good business sense.
This isn't an isolated incident. Reports and traveler forums frequently highlight issues with:
• Charges for scratches, scuffs, or dings that were already present when the car was rented. (My case)
• High repair estimates that seem inflated.
• Delays in processing returns or surprise deductions from credit cards weeks later.
• Pressure at busy airport locations where staff may rush inspections.
Ireland's consumer protection bodies, such as the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and the European Consumer Centre, acknowledge that car rental is a top area for complaints, especially around damage and insurance upsells. The Car Rental Council of Ireland exists for member companies, and is supposed to ensure the car rental sector in Ireland operates to high standards, supports tourism policy, and protects consumer interests.
Ireland is an incredible destination filled with warmth, history, and hospitality that we Irish Americans cherish. These rental issues don't reflect the spirit of the country, but they can sour a wonderful trip if you're unprepared. By sharing experiences and best practices, we can look out for each other.
Recommendation: Tips to Protect Yourself (Share These Widely): 1. Document Everything: Take timestamped photos and videos of every inch of the car (including undercarriage, wheels, trunk deck and interior) at pickup and drop-off, in good lighting. Insist that a staff member comes out and inspects the car with you and get any existing damage noted on the rental agreement. 2. Reject Unnecessary Extras: Be cautious with "premium" insurance or damage waivers if your credit card already provides coverage (check your card's benefits first). 3. Fuel and Mileage Policies: Understand the exact terms—full-to-full is usually safest. 4. Dispute Promptly: If charged unfairly, respond in writing immediately, provide your evidence, and reference your rights under EU/ Irish consumer law. Templates are available from the ECC Ireland. 5. Credit Card Protection: Dispute unauthorized charges with your card issuer, providing all documentation.
