Dear Insurance Commissioner, Mike Kreidler,

We have serious concerns about Valentine Roofing (Licensing Number:VALENR1927J8),

We contracted for a tear-off and new roof on 8/13/2018 with Cody R. Williams, Valentine Salesman. I can include the list of things they promised, many of which may not have been done well or correctly. The total price was $13,552.60.

During the installation, we noticed problems. The nailing pattern was not the 5 nails per shingle but 3. We called Valentine to complain, and the nailing noise changed, at least for a while. The foreman on the job (Trinidad) spent 3 days screaming at the workers in Spanish.

One problem was that they had NOT vented the entire roof. The ½ story is actually a box placed in a peaked roof giving it 5 separate attic spaces. That had to be corrected. Trinidad was sent out to fix this MINOR problem. I have the emails if needed.

The decorative returns on each roof end were not roofed properly, and a company man (Chuck) came out several times to fix them. Several eventually fell out again.

To install flashing around the dormers, the roofers split the ends of the side walls to install the flashing, a quick and dirty fix but a place we worry will eventually leak.

The roof was completed in October 2018, but Chuck, their fix-it guy, was out September 2 and 8, 2018, to make some fixes and respond to our complaints.

Time passed. It’s April 4, 2022 and the bathroom floor has a puddle in the middle of the night. We didn’t know the origin, but seeing it is a two-story house, it could be plumbing. We called PEMCO Insurance. The insurance company sent out DryTech (Blaine) and Roofing Specialist NW (Robert), on 4/5/11 and 4/11/22 respectively. DryTech found a place in the roof where the end of a finger could poke through, and it appears a boot was never put on the stack pipe. It had been leaking for 3 ½ years at least.

We also called Valentine as we have a warrantee that says they will fix the roof if we notice a problem, but it also says they will not fix any damage done by that leak. Roofing Specialists temporarily stopped the leak and DryTech dried out the area and corrected any potential mold. The bathroom ceiling still shows bubbles in the ceiling paint. (In theory, seeing Roofing Specialists was on the roof, that portion of the roof could now be removed from warrantee. We have yet to cross that bridge.)

When Roofing Specialist NW Robert was viewing the roof, he noticed several problems that show poor workmanship and could lead to more leaks in the future, leaks WE’d have to discover so Valentine could return to fix the roof (but not the damage). I can provide all 24 pictures.

The Valentine Roofer was on the roof on 5/3/22 1 pm. We showed him the short list of needed repairs as listed by Roofing Specialists, and he said he would take a look. He was here for about five hours. He seemed an improvement over the original roofers.

The only way to discover if the roof has been adequately fixed by Valentine Roofing is to hire Roofing Specialist NW at our expense to reassess the fixes.

Sincerely,

Gail Martini-Peterson

Desired outcome: We'd like Valentine Roofing to pay the cost of their damage.
