My son was admitted to the ER early Monday morning (8/9/2021) with stomach pain so bad that he was unable to walk upright. After several hours and a CT scan that "showed nothing", he was discharged with a "stomach virus". He was prescribed nausea medicine and meds for intestinal cramping.
Wednesday (8/11/2021), he was in even more pain. I decided at that time, we needed another opinion. I took him to the standalone ER (also Memorial Hermann) and they ran another CT scan. They were able to immediately determine that his appendix had ruptured. They called for an ambulance and he was taken straight into surgery.
Due to COVID, I was not able to go into the hospital ( which I completely understand) so the surgeon called me once the surgery was complete. He advised that there was a lot of infection and pus, which caused the surgery to last a bit longer. He said it appears to have been ruptured for several days. He also stated that they should have been able to see that on the CT scan in the ER late Sunday night/early Monday morning. This is a HUGE concern. Had it not been for intuition, and knowing my child... I would have believed that he had a stomach virus and he may not be with us any longer.
