I want to warn others about purchasing a kitten from Wendy Smith at Nova Mao Mao. The kittens are kept in filthy conditions in a dirty shed with extremely dirty litter boxes and low quality cat food. When we picked up our kitten we had to drive home 1.5 hours and the smell of urine on the kitten was so unbearable we had to roll down the window and stick hand cleaner wipes in the car air vents. The poor kitten had to immediately get a bath which was very traumatic for him and not a good start in his new home with new family. The kitten had a runny nose and terrible cough and worms. Wendy’s website says she is interested in their health for breeding purposes but never contacted us to ask how our kitten was. We love our kitty very much but he is far from a lap cat. I can’t imagine how any person could spend much time with the kittens in that urine shed. My husband tried to go inside with me but had to leave because he almost vomited. I couldn’t even ask questions about the kitten because I just wanted to get out of there. We are happy we saved our kitty from this terrible environment. Someone should really look into this business because it was really awful. The one positive is that Wendy did provide pictures and video of the kitten growing up almost every day.

I felt compelled to write this because we just purchased our second ragdoll from a different breeder and it was a totally different and wonderful experience. Kitty was clean and in perfect health and well socialized.

Desired outcome: I am not looking for compensation. We love our cat so much. I just hope Wendy views this and makes some changes to her business so the kittens don’t suffer and also the employees that spend time with them in the smelly shed.

I purchased my rag doll almost 5 years ago from MaoMao. I had a similar experience. Home smelled terrible and my kitten smelled of urine for several days. She did not, however, have a respiratory illness or fleas. Don’t know about worms; we had her dewormed as a precaution. I knew as soon as I made an initial visit that I might be dealing with a kitten mill. The entire experience was very strange. House was empty except for her husband, the kitten I was to adopt, and 1 or 2 adult cats. At that point, I just wanted to get the kitten I chose out of there. While I will never regret purchasing my rag doll, she was not as socialized as I expected. She cried the whole way home. On one hand, she is super sweet, outrageously funny, amazing with our large, reactive dog and she follows me everywhere. She also plays fetch like a dog. But, she hates to be picked up and carried - something that most rag dolls love. I hope that, based on some of the reviews, Wendy will make a greater effort regarding cleanliness and socialization, rather than take offense.
