My husband and I purchased long term care policies from Unum in 2002, and we paid quarterly premiums until recently. The premium payments were continually raised through the years as we aged. My husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in May 2019 and was hospitalized 4 times with small bowel obstructions. When he had what I thought was the criteria to receive long term care benefits, I called Unum, pulled up, printed and completed the online claim forms. I received a call from Unum representative who was assigned to my husband's claim. She asked me many questions about the length of his illness and when he became unable to complete 5 of the 7 activities of daily living. After I answered her quesions, she informed me that my husband was not eligible for long term care benefits because his inability to perform ADLs were not consecutive for their required period of 90 days. I protested and told her that I was my husband's primary care giver from May 2019 until his death on 11/2/19 and I asked to speak to her manager. After talking to the manager and telling her the same information, she also told me that they wouldn't pay any long term benefits.

BUYER BEWARE: DO NOT PURCHASE A LONG TERM CARE POLICY UNLESS YOU FULLY DISCUSS THE POLICY WITH AN AGENT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE FINE PRINT THAT ALLOWS THEM TO TAKE YOUR MONEY FOR YEARS AND THEN BE ABLE TO DISALLOW ANY BENEFIT PAYMENTS THAT YOU THINK YOU ARE ENTITLED TO.
