Dear Ministry,

My name is Diane Whittles and my traveling companion is Mike McConnell. We arrived at Sunset Cove in Nassau around 4:30 PM, flying Southwest from Baltimore, MD on October 24, 2021.

We could not figure out how to get into the property as there were two locked gates. We had no internet access so we drove to place where we knew we could get it. We messaged Mary Enns via VRBO and she told us to unlock the lock box near the first gate and the gate key would be inside and it was. She said the key would be in the door to our unit and it was not. We drove out again until we were able to get internet service and let her know there was no key. She called or I called her cell, do not recall.

They said it would take about 20 minutes to get there because they were on the other side of the island. At the time, we did not realize they live in Coral Harbour. Either the VRBO website said they lived on property or the information binder that we found in the room. Mary and Peter drove over and in fact, no key was there. Peter got a spare key, and we were finally in. Mary was quite angry with us for not reading her instructions and interrupting her dinner. She was not welcoming at all. We asked to be compensated for the 2.5 hour of denied access to our accommodations and Peter waived the 60.00 Cleaning fee, which was acceptable to us.

We brought our luggage in and went directly to meet Mike's son at dinner. We got back around midnight and went to bed. We did not think or understand that the slider locked from above because that is not the norm in the U.S. We just thought the maid (the Enns' blamed the maid for the missing key) left the door unlocked. There was also a board on the bottom of the slider, so we assumed the door just didn't lock properly. We were fine though because we believed there was security on the property from 7PM to 7AM.

The next morning, Mike woke up first and me, shortly afterward. Mike said the floor was wet between the living area and kitchen and he did not know why. I sat outside and waited for my coffee when Mike came out and said someone had been through his bag and all his cash was gone. I went inside and we looked around. I noticed the tile floor was sandy and then I noticed Mike's driver's license laying on the floor near the slider. We also saw keys laying on the beach in front of our unit that belonged to the unit directly above us. We retrieved the keys and gave them to Mary and Peter, and she said they were probably from the drunk girls upstairs who brought locals back to Sunset Cove.

We called Mary and she and Peter came over. Peter seemed concerned and Mary was just mad and confrontational. She was insulting and rude. But I guess that is not relevant. Anyway, Mike and I just sulked for a bit and tried to figure out what to do. We hesitated to call the police because we figured what good would it do? No one could get our cash back and we considered ourselves fortunate that Mike's dive gear was still there and his wallet, although cash less, was still there with his credit cards.
Mike and his family have been long time Bahamian loving tourists. Mike and his family have been bringing their friends to Nassau and the Bahamas for a long time and have established many friendships and colleagues in Nassau for over 30 years. Those residents advised Mike to phone the police at once! So we did. Mike called Mary to tell her we decided to phone the police and she was very angry.

Three officers (Betty Bodie) took our statements and they called CSI in to dust for fingerprints. They could not have been more compassionate or concerned for us and our safety. Upon leaving, Officer Bodie made note that there was no security guard when they arrived and certainly none when they left at 8:30 PM or so. A contact at TSA said that property managers are REQUIRED to provide 24/7 security in Nassau, and I do not know if that is accurate but Sunset Cove (VRBO) said the security guard would be on site from 7PM to 7AM. The police also advised us to contact The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation.

You may wonder how the Epps responded to the break-in. Mary accused us of being scam artists just trying to take her money, accused us of being drunks (I guess the girls upstairs were drunks, too), ridiculed us for going to the fish fry as if a serious tourist would never be seen there. She also repeatedly told me, Diane, to be quiet when I tried to interject something. She obviously is over the hospitality industry as all she did was complain about her job. We were victimized once, and I think I would rather be robbed than encounter her again.

Rather than letting her get the best of us with her vitriol, Mike and I decided to pray for her because she is a troubled soul.

Meanwhile, I want you to know that Mike and I good decent hardworking people, both owning our own businesses. We still love Nassau as we have been there four times in the past year, but I think we were scammed, not the other way around.

Sincerely,

Diane Whittles

Desired outcome: I have asked American Express to dispute the charge as security was not provided. We had over $3,000 stolen from our room and the host simply did not care. Police report is on file.

One question Diane, if you had seriously been "robbed" why were you quite happy to stay in the same apartment for 3 more nights ?
I would have been out of there asap if I had been robbed, we even asked if you want to check out, we will refund you and you said No it's okay ? weird

You also gave the police a false report claiming the door had been locked, I have spoken to them several times, they said they would be calling you back. Your friend Mike slept on the sofa in a tiny 700 sq ft apartment, and allegedly someone entered and neither of you woke ?

Thanks for the prayers ...lol

Hi Diane & Steve ?
So glad you eventually managed to check in, you did not take our contact number and were not able to contact us via internet on arrival because your wife could not log on, but we eventually found you, even though we got up form Sunday dinner to come rescue you after spending hours trying to track you down as you were communication through an inquiry, not a booking, so all contact numbers were being blocked, no thanks, just a lot of aggressive acquisitions thrown at us, when we let you in, you then left to go have dinner with your son at the Fish Fry with apparently $3, 000 in your pocket ? Fish Fry notorious for pick pocketing etc, you tell us you have been coming here for 30 Years ? you know the score. Then next morning we get a call to say you have been robbed allegedly, someone came in your apartment, stole $3, 000 out of your pocket but never touched, watches, mobiles, dive equipment allegedly worth $1, 000 of dollars by your own admission, something that can easily be sold here on the island, but allegedly they came through a door you left open, no sign of a break-in, and stole $3, 000 from your pants pockets without you or your wife hearing anything in a tiny apartment. I will say the next morning when we rushed down to help once again, your apartment stank of spirits, it almost felt like strike a match and it would ignite, I could hardly breathe. so I have no idea how long the party went on after you returned from the fish fry, so where you lost the money, who knows, but now you want us to give you $0000 in compensation, why exactly ?
