I, like many others, am desperate for work. I applied for a temporary bookstore clerk position in Charlotte, NC with a company called Spherion through CareerBuilder.com. I soon received a call that they had received my application, but were interested in me regarding a medical receptionist position they had coming up which worked for me because I had previous experience in that field. I was asked to go to their website and create a profile by registering my information (personal, resume, refernces, education, etc). A week goes by and I hear nothing. I just received an email from a Christopher Tegner (supposedly a staffing consultant with Spherion) in regards to a call center position with Hewitt & Associates.

The email read as follows:

"Hewitt and Associates - Inbound Customer Service - Testing on the way - Please Read Regarding Interviewing Process

You have been sent this email because you applied to the open positions (via Career Builder) with Hewitt and Associates. Your resume was selected because you possess the necessary customer service background for the positions.

I have added your email address to my list and will send you out tests shortly. It is important that you read this email and understand the requirements for the positions as well as the hiring process.

If you have been scheduled for an interview already or are working with another Spherion associate please disregard this email.

If you have received this message more than once it is because you applied to the job posting more than once. Please disregard this email.

First of all, I would NEVER apply for a call center position. One of my primary duties at my last job was to answer all incoming calls. There is a reason why I went back to school and it wasn't so I could be low man on the totem pole anymore. They also claim to have 600+ positions to fill which seems unlikely. Secondly, a red flag was that it mentioned it would need a credit report. I have never applied anywhere that required that. Most legitimate staffing agencies have you come in for an interview where you provide your resume and they have you fill out their paperwork. On occassion, should they have a position that meets your needs, you may be asked for a criminal background check and a drug screening. I have never had an agency ask for my school transcripts for a clerical position. Also, the email sent did not contain a company logo and was not formatted properly and consisted of multiple fonts and colors. Another issued I had was that other complaint websites had responses that this is an actual company, but they are victims of scammers who use real companies for fraudulent activities. I don't believe this is the case for several reasons. If you google "Christopher Tegner" there are multiple websites with information linking him to the company. Also, there are similar complaints of mistreatment once hired on several other complaint websites. Another thing was that the position is for the Charlotte area, but instead of being contacted by my local office, I receive an email from a recruiter in Illinois? Lastly, the Sperion website contains many spelling/grammatical errors and does not provide a way to email them through their website. This in itself shows a lack of professionalism that should send off warning bells to anyone with half a brain. I also received a second email asking me to take a proficiency test which seemed odd because you usually do this AFTER the office interview:

"Please note: This e-mail was sent from a notification-only address that cannot accept incoming e-mail. Please do not reply to this message.

I know from complaints on other websites regarding this company that it is after you take this test, that you are asked to get a free credit report to bring to your interview, but the provided link asks for credit card info. Total scam. It's a shame that in these difficult times, certain companies are taking advantage of the jobless by scamming them into giving up their personal info and using it for their own selfish purposes. This company may in fact actually hire people on occassion, but from what I have experienced of its practices, I recommend staying far away. This is my second experience with fake staffing agencies in the last two weeks. Good luck to all my fellow job seekers out there!

Nobody said I was asked for credit card information. I said I had heard from other complaints that prompt you to apply for a credit check that is supposed to be free, but they ended up having to pay for it. Even if some "clients" require a credit check, none of the positions I would apply for should so in that matter, shouldn't you only request a credit check in the instance when a specific client requests it and not require one from every applicant?

Also, I did apply at Spherion and was told over the phone that Spherion was interested in me for a position I had experience in. I never heard back about that position, but they were quick to get me to go to the Spherion website to enter my life's story in a profile. I did receive an email about a position I did not apply for (twice) and a seperate email prompting me to take a test (twice) with no further contact regarding the position I applied for.

I am aware of the "supposed" phishing ploy, but I do not feel I am a victim of such since I had, in fact, applied with the company and made a profile at the company's request. I also noticed how you didn't specify if the above mentioned emails were similar to those you do send out or if the company contact (Christopher Tegner) does indeed work for Spherion. Nice try, though. You are still bogus in my eyes and I would NEVER work for you or recommend your company to anyone I know. Have you googled yourselves recently? I can assure you that my complaint is not the only one.

I apologize for any confusion you may have experienced. I maintain the best practices of pointing out recruitment scams to other job seekers.

To Redbone1978, you obviously didn't read the original post. I didn't say that I was asked for credit card information. I said that many people from other complaint sites mention being told the company will provide a free credit check only to be sent to a link that asks for credit card information in order to be supplied with the verification number for the report. This is a common ploy used by "employment" agencies to make money on the side in the event you are not hired and they can't make money off of your employment.

Also, most financial institutions do require a credit check, but the job was for a clerical position at a calling center (not a financial institution) and should not require a credit check. By the way, I have excellent credit and I never submitted it to be checked because I realized that this company was a complete waste of my time.

The supposed credit check was not my only complaint. There were other issues like multiple typos and a phone call about a job that apparently didn't exist but was an excuse to get me to go to their site and enter my information. When you add all these factors up, you realize how unprofessional all of this is and make the correct decision not to do further business with them.

If you want to do business with them, that is your choice, but you should at least wait until you actually work for them (not just interview) before you disagree with a complaint. I am making people aware of my own experience so that they may proceed with caution. I have personally encountered too many staffing agencies that either list fake job listings so that they may use your personal information for themselves OR they are a real agency, but treat their employees poorly. If you think this company is so great, you may want to Google them just for fun. There is nothing wrong with being informed so you can see the bigger picture.

You must be a full-time employee of Spherion. If you Google "Sperion Staffing" the fourth thing in the automated search field is "spherion staffing services scam." There are so many complaints on so many sites about Spherion's shady tactics regarding contract or temp-to-hire employees. Spherion continually makes promises they don't keep and lets people go with zero notice. Say what you will about my writing, but the proof is in the pudding.

I'm not bitter. In fact, I'm thankfull I don't have to deal with these people. I find it extremely comical that you say I have nothing better to do when you took the time to post, as well. I'm done arguing about these companies. Instead of picking on one reviewer why don't you go tell these reviewers what a joy it is to work for Sperion and Hewitt & Associates:

I have been working for Spherion (formerly Today's Staffing and now Ranstad or some such name)nfor over 3 years in the same temp position, While I can say the recruiters are ultimately sleezy and care little about what they have to say or do to get you under contract with them, I've had NO problems with them as far as placing me in a reputable company quickly.

If you are looking for a permanent job don't apply for this position. I applied and got the position in August of 2011. It was the most degrading experience that I have ever had. The training does not prepare you for the job that they want you to do. There are two types of training that you have to go through. Elite training shows you how to navigate the CSPRO system and client specific training that is suppose to train you for the client team that you will be working with. . After the training you are sit with someone for call listening and you will soon find out that you know little or nothing about what is expected on the floor. The permanent associate are mean and nasty and are not willing to help learn the position. Some of the TMs have never worked on the team and no less then what you know . Basically it a very uncertain job and there are no guarantees . Spherion will stand with Aon Hewitt on all the decisions that make. You will have know one in your corner. One day you may be called in a conference room while some collect your personal things from your cubicle. DON'T DO IT!

I was employed with Spherion at Aon Hewitt from August 2011 to December 2011. While Aon Hewitt itself is an excellent company. Spherion is HORRIBLE! The CSS's are power struck and lazy. They shortened me on my check 4 times. Two of those time it took over 3 weeks before I was paid for hours I put in! Which is ridiculous, being that their attendance policy is so strict. I was written up for being 6 minutes late logging in. Here's the thing, employees must use the PC/Phone to clock in. I informed my CSS via email that I was experiencing computer issues (15 minutes before my schedule start time) . She told me it was fine and that she would make the necessary adjustments so my adherence wouldn't be effected . ( Oh there wasn't any other available computers so I had no choice but to wait.) Once IT guy fixed my computer at 8:06 am I logged on and completed my shift. The next day my CSS brings a write up to my desk asking me to sign! I was flabbergasted to say the least. She informed me "If your not on your phone, taking calls at your schedule time you would have to be written up". Even if it's a technical issue out of my control! If an employee is 5 minutes to 4 hours late. It's a occurrence of .50. Let's just say my CSS didn't take too kindly of my refusal to sign that document.

I currently work for Spherion at AON Hewitt. Because we deal with highly sensitive personal information - including social security numbers, salary information, personal insurance information, and passwords - they do require a credit check. They do NOT ask for credit card or bank information. The testing is required before the interview because they screen thousands of candidates. They really DO hire several hundred people for annual enrollment. I started with 250 people, and 200 more started the next week. There are certainly issues with the company, and I often feel like I'm part of a cattle drive being moved en masse, but the company is legit.

Same thing here. Just got back from interview at Hewitt in Lincolnshire, IL. Was contacted by e-mail by Spherion. I filled and copied about 40 pages of personal information giving my permission to go into yet more personal files via internet, such as criminal background, educational background, employment background, (WHAT YOU DON''T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MY PERSONAL SEX LIFE!). I was looking for employment as a Customer Service Representative(i.e. face-to-face customer contact) not a CALL CENTER. To make things short, 4-5 people showed up, we all got chastised for something or other, such as not bringing in all the right forms (one poor young lady who was a newly-wed and brought in her corrected SSN, got chastised for not changing her name with Spherion-she was one who just left without an interview), out of 4-5 who showed up, I believe only two of us got to second base, the one-to-one interview-AND I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE-I DID NOT GET HIRED--THANK YOU LORD. At least I did not pay out any money, nor except any money from ACXIOM, SPHERION, or HEWITT, and am contemplating filing a complaint about all three with the Illinois Attorney General.

I too just received the following email (copied below). Funny thing though is i NEVER had a phone interview with anyone (first red flag) and it has NO CONTACT NAME at all either within the body of the email or in the "from" field (second red flag). So far it isn't asking for credit card info or much other than to take a test, but ANY email that has links in them for you to go to another site without you knowing who they are, having contact names, or just seems fishy is enough for me to totally disregard and delete. For all I know it could be a link to a computer virus which would be a huge headache, aside from taking bogus tests. Thanks so much for posting your note above. The email I received just now follows:
================================================

I too was a Hewitt-Spherion contractor. I can honestly say that everyone hired as a contractor was constantly on "fear control". My interview included myself and another hopeful. Completely different backgrounds. I should have known something was up at that point. A few questions, then "well, I'm going to hire you both". Never was I told that Hewitt was a call center. I was told that I was applying for an HR Rep opening! Boy, was I in for a surprise! We were all "herded" into the cafeteria, lectured to like children by the Spherion recruiters about attendance and dress code, then "herded" again to our "desks' which are cubicles in squares called "blocks". That job was the most unstable in both hours and management. I was told that if your attendance, adherance and call scores were kept up, you would be moved to different clients and hired permanently. This was not so. I was laid off in January, along with other CSA's in a group. We were told that "you are not fired, you are still employed with Spherion, however your assignment for your client is over." Which is all well and clear, BUT I was completely taken aback by the lies I was told from Spherion recruiters-CSS's. The one thing that WAS true, was when a male CSS once told me "it's our job to get you guys in trouble"...WHAT? He was honest, probably the only time he was honest. The recruiters or CSS's were rarely available if needed, did not respond to emails (although CSA's were required to sent messages to them pertaining to adherance), were rude and completely unprofessional. When it was time for our "monthly revues", my adherance stated was wrong due to CSS's not correcting system errors even after emailing them everyday for a month! But, I believed the hype the Spherion CSS's were claiming about "writing your own ticket for permanency". I had 100% adherence, no absences, call quality scores were always over 90, perfect--according to CSS's--YET I was laid off. What it comes down to is what ever client you are currently represently. If that client is done with enrollment--your contract is up. They didn't move me or the others to another for a permentant shot at all. Which brings up a whole other topic of hours..you never knew when they would change. One day you could be working 9-5, next week 12pm-9pm! I do not recommend working for Spherion/Hewitt to anyone unless you like the "thrill of fear" of losing your job at any minute, being watched, judged and critisized constantly and like your future scripted by cold hearted recruiters.

I too was taken back by the unprofessionalism at Hewitt and being treated "differently" due to being a Spherion employee. I let my unemployment check go to take this "temp" job because I was told I had a good chance of becoming permanent. I had been laid off of a job of 8 years in a call center and was taking a pay cut but still getting the same pay as unemployment check. I ended up getting MTO after a couple months on a regular basis. There were times I came in and worked 1 hour and then they started "recruiting" for people to leave early. We were told if they didn't get volunteers they would start picking people to leave. (which they did). Then 2 weeks before Christmas they sent a whole group of us home for 2 weeks! This really put me in a bind. I ended up losing my apartment and moving in with my son and his family. I also had a problem with the team managers talking to you like you are a child and I have children their age. It was a bad experience for me and very disappointing. After we came back from the 2 week break we work another month. Then they sent us home for another month saying they would call us back to work. They did call but I decided not to go on that merry-go-round again.

Im not usually one for posting comments. But i have to applaud the original review posted. You were able to see through all the bs before you went through the process. I was hired through another staffing agency who told myself and a friend we were going to work for hewitt. When we arrived at the location for orientation we were utterly confused when the spherion managers did their introductions. There was around 200 hopefuls, most of which with degrees in areas unrrelated. 5 months of tolerating spherions crap and i have had enough. They keep getting creative with reasons to fire all those supposed 600 employees they brought in. Your stay is not dependent on the needs of the clients nor your performance. It is based on how much money spherion can squeeze out of hewitt to let you go. The spherion managers are beyond incompetent. Never available, constamtly fumbling with your daily schedule and weekly pay. The mto they dish regularly sometimes for a week at a time goes on the books as voluntary so it looks like u requested it. One manager in particular has a rep in the building for exercising blatant racial discrimination yet still is employed there. They claim they have a no retaliation policy but everyone i know who voiced any complaint has been let go. All i can say to those still currently employed with them is to stick it out for as long as possible. Bills have to be paid and quitting makes it easier for them to be paid. And to those considering, the stress of walking in the door every morning is not for everyone.

I agree with you get it together they did the same wit me just recently they sit there and have someone judge ur call that see you every day plus they always pick on your calls even the calls that customers give you kudos on they still say something you done was wrong, they already know who they want to keep the other contractors that are there to listen to your calls want you to kiss their butt, no sir I will not, they only favor people that stay in they face and smile with them, I really hate that I ever took that job because they were just so full of it not to mention that the Hewitt employees treat the contractors like dirt, that job was making me violent I just wanted to go postal in that place because you can't win, they check your background like you going to work for the CIA they want your w2 for the last 5 years and you think that by them requesting all this info the job is about something, well it is not they start you off with 40 hours next thing u know you getting MTO the staffing agency Spherion is wack for Hewitt you cant wear jeans but the permanant people can and they single you out from anything that is going on it is only for perms but when they having fun raisers you can participate yeah ok

Sally13, you are not making any kind of sense. I agree with other people on this posting. I have been hired by Spherion on several occasions as well. I have not had any bad experiences with them. I submitted my profile on Spherion's website. I have also applied for jobs with Spherion through Craigslist and Careerbuilder. I have went through the process of taking a required test. I was also told that the company (Hewitt Associates) not Spherion requires a credit check. You do sound like a bitter person with nothing else to do.

I have had no problems with Spherion as I have been hired twice for Hewitt through them and went permanent the second time. I think your attitude toward employers and staffing firms prevents you form attaining employment. I found the person's I dealt with very helpful. I am sorry you are having trouble finding a job. It sounds like you want a company to hire you directly; you will find that that is very rare these days. You commented that you were too good for a call center position which makes you come of arrogant. I worked for 11 years in an upper management role and in these tough times I am glad that there is a company that is willing to provide me the chance to get my foot in the door. You might want to adjust you attitude, it may just help your chances in the future.

HeySally13
You obviously need to get a job because you spend all your time writing ridiculous paragraphs. All I think you are is salty. If you did any research on the client not Spherion you would be aware of the fact its open enrollment season for a lot of companies. Spherion is just contracted to do what the client wants them to do. Besides registering with the company itself opens you up to search engines in their database for you to be recruited for other future positions.

I totally disagree. Most jobs now when you are dealing with financial institute you do have to get a credit check to see what you character is. They do the credit check automatically. You do no have to provide credit card info. I was offered the position and I my credit passed. I have also been to my interview everything looks good. I don't understand your complaint. I think your credit just did not pass.

jazzyt,

If you have already been in for paperwork, you are well on your way to a great position. Benefits were not mentioned due to the fact that this position is a temporary position. With temporary positions, the benefits are not that great but are offered. From my own experience, this is certainly something that is disussed once you are with the company as you will be sent enrollment information specifically. I hope this does not differ you from accepting the position because it really is a good company to work for. Take it from me, I was just hired permanently with Hewitt Associates from Spherion temporary agency. Good luck!

OMG i am terrified! i do not no what to do. Thank GOD i have not quit my job yet! i just filled out all the "new hire" paperwork but i also noticed they did not say anything about benefits. the lady i interviewed with was nice but once everyone came for the paper work day she was aggressive with some people. I also notices several grammar errors in the handbook and in various emails they sent...

Unfortunately, Spherion has become aware of and recently tied to a recent phishing ploy that preys against job candidates, attempting to lure them to submit credit information.

Please know that this is not a message from Spherion. We do not ask our job candidates to provide us with credit information in advance of some preliminary screening.

To be clear, occasionally some of our clients do require credit checks to be run for certain positions within their company. This is often one part of a process of interviews, testing and reviews. However, please know that we never ask for credit card information in the hiring process.

Additionally, we have National Recruiting Centers located throughout the United States. These centers are able to fill positions in several states by using our extensive, national candidate database and dedicated teams of regionally-based recruiters. So while a recruiter may not be located in your backyard, they place thousands of candidates in positions throughout the country.

We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience you may have experienced. Spherion maintains best practices in its recruitment efforts and places a high value on our workforce.
