I found Sideline Construction's Tom Smith at a Rochester, NY home show, about 15 years ago. He had the lowest bid regarding re-roofing a low pitched roof over my bedroom wing. Other roofers stated that they would use roll roofing, but Tom insisted traditional shingles were OK and would look better. (It's so low pitched you can't see the roof unless from uphill or in a tree.)
Well, 2 years later, the roof was leaking into my son's room. The job was "guaranteed" and a crew was sent out to repair or replace the roof. HOWEVER, Tom must have tried to get his insurance company to cover the cost, and found out they would not because even on the original paper wrapping on the shingles, it specifies the lowest pitch that was safe to use them for, and mine was lower. SO he actually ordered his crew to leave after taking off half the shingles and covering it with an old tarp!
I didn't have the money to pay for this all over again, and though I took him to Small Claims Court, it took 2 tries to get any monetary reward. I fortunately qualified for a city grant to get another contractor to replace my roof, but not after a whole summer of running home from work whenever it rained to move the buckets around to catch the leaks.
Tom Smith & Sideline Construction are surprisingly still in business. AVOID!
I have user Sideline Construction 3 times in the past 10 years and I can tell you that Tom Smith stands behind the products he sells as well as the labor. Tom was highly recommended to me by two other friends who also had a very positive experience with Sideline Construction.
Tom Smith and sideline construction are awful. in 2011 i had them install new siding on my home. tom was very friendly at first. Once i paid trouble started. He and his employees were very rude to me and my family. They took my money and left the job unfinished. i have had to replace all the work they did complete. Stay away they seem to be running a scam. Anyone who says different is either from the sideline construction or a family member. Avoid doing business with them.
We used Sideline for windows, doors and siding this past fall and found them nothing but honest, reliable and they did a quality job. (and no, I am NOT related, nor an employee) Regarding the comment that he took their money and didn't finish the job, right from the start Tom stated that no payment is done until the job is done to our satisfaction, which was 100% the case. While there will always be people who have an issue with someone, the person stating that he took their money has to be not telling the truth. Tom is accessible (we had a problem with a window that was promptly fixed) and his installer was polite, efficient and reliable. We would recommend Sideline and use them again.
Regarding Jarhead21. Interesting how Sideline Construction doesn't ever take money down until the customer is happy. Sounds like more like an unhappy competitor to me
Sideline Construction did work for us siding and windows were fine, they replaced about four windows that the argon gas escaped.. The roof they put on our house is the worse job you can imagine. We have had leaks in the Kitchen in one of the bedroom the window seat roof is still leaking as I type this . Mr Smith sends his person out to fix it every time but it does not seem to get fixed. I keep calling but not always get a response. He knows me well by now he only has to tell his roofer the street and he knows where to go. I am at a loss at what to do. Our roof needs to be replaced and done properly. I would never recommend Mr Smith for any construction job. Never even offered to fix the drywall on the window seat ceiling which has a hole in which water is going into a container the water damage is extreme. My kitchen cabinets and overhang ceiling also has excessive water damage from the roof leaking every time it rains. Well now it is spring and it rains, it is just one big mess. I am very sorry I hired Mr Smith to do my house.
In a added note about my roof Tom Smith hired this man to do the roof with his crew of inner city young men who had no clue about how to install a roof like mine (mansard roof with dormer windows. He has always sent someone to fix this mess of a roof words cannot discribe how bad it looks up close. We are senior citiizens and have a limited income. There is no way we can afford to fix this roof. Now I have about 10 shingles that have fallen off the roof looks awful. I did call Mr Smith and he told me that he would not send any one out to fix the roof until I took my post off this site. Well that cannot happen for I do not know how to do that. Mr Smiths company does I great job and since this mess with my roof I believe he fired this roofer, too late for me but good for everyone else
